For one stream that the Droplet must encode or transcode, use a 2-vCPU/4-GB CPU-Optimized Droplet as a starting point for your own benchmark—not as a guaranteed capacity. DigitalOcean lists video and live streaming as CPU-Optimized workloads, and that is the family’s smallest configuration. If the Droplet only relays an already encoded feed, start with a small shared-CPU Basic Droplet and monitor it under the real workload. The right size depends on what the server does, not simply on the fact that the stream runs 24/7.
Choose the Droplet by what it does to the video
A 24/7 YouTube stream can be a relatively light relay or a sustained encoding workload. Decide which describes your setup before choosing a plan. DigitalOcean recommends matching Droplet resources to measured use and load-testing before relying on a production configuration; it does not publish a guarantee that a particular size will encode a specific YouTube stream.

The Droplet’s CPU requirement depends on the work you ask it to do. Record the source and output resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder preset, bitrate, number of outputs, and whether the source is pushed to the server or pulled from elsewhere. A relay that forwards an already encoded feed is not equivalent to decoding and re-encoding it. Multiple outputs or simultaneous transcodes add work, so test the complete configuration rather than one process in isolation.

For YouTube ingest, its current encoder guide recommends the following H.264 bitrate examples. These are YouTube recommendations, checked 2026-10-03; the page does not state a publication date. Select the row that matches the output you actually send.

YouTube’s guide supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 or AV1; it recommends RTMPS for a secure connection, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval that should not exceed 4 seconds. These are ingest settings, not a promise that a Droplet of any particular size can encode the stream in real time. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guide for codec-specific details and other output combinations.
Estimate continuous outbound transfer
For a steady 12 Mbps outgoing stream, the arithmetic is 12 megabits per second × 3,600 seconds per hour ÷ 8 bits per byte: about 5.4 decimal GB per hour. That is approximately 129.6 GB per day and 3,888 GB (about 3.89 decimal TB) over 30 days, before packet and protocol overhead. This is a calculated estimate, not a DigitalOcean transfer allowance. The outgoing stream drives this part of the Droplet’s outbound usage; include inbound traffic and any other outputs separately when estimating the whole workload.

DigitalOcean pools included transfer across a team’s Droplets and charges $0.01 per GiB for additional outbound transfer. Allowance depends on the current plan and the team’s overall usage, so check the live pricing or control panel rather than assuming the full allowance is available to one stream. Included transfer does not roll over. Premium CPU-Optimized plans are described as capable of up to 10 Gbps throughput, but a high throughput ceiling does not reduce transfer volume or eliminate overage charges. Benchmark and monitor before depending on the stream
DigitalOcean recommends watching Droplet graphs and alerting on CPU, memory, disk and bandwidth, and load-testing at expected peak—especially for shared-CPU workloads. Run representative content long enough to reveal operational problems; a brief successful launch does not establish 24/7 capacity.
- Watch CPU during the busiest or most complex video segments. Sustained saturation can leave the encoder unable to keep up.
- Track memory over time to catch growth that a short test would miss.
- Check stream health and dropped-frame indicators, and confirm that encoder restarts or network interruptions do not leave the stream stalled.
- Review bandwidth and projected transfer against the team’s shared allowance and possible overage.
- Test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, preset, audio and number of concurrent outputs planned for production.
YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Keep the stream’s real content characteristics in the test, then continue monitoring YouTube stream health after launch.

Account for Droplet billing while it runs
A continuous stream runs continuously billed compute resources. DigitalOcean says bundled CPU Droplets continue to bill while powered off because the resources remain reserved; destroying the Droplet stops that billing. v5 configurations are billed by configured resources and actual hours, without a monthly usage cap, so the total for a month varies with its hours. Confirm the current plan pricing and transfer allowance before deployment, and include any outbound transfer overage in the operating-cost estimate.
Optional: deploy a streaming server stack
DigitalOcean Marketplace documents an SRS 1-Click App. Its SRS Stack documentation describes publishing with WebRTC, RTMP or SRT, recording to MP4, multi-platform restreaming and FFmpeg transcoding. The documentation includes an API deployment example requesting a 2-vCPU/4-GB s-2vcpu-4gb Droplet in SFO2. That is an example request, not an SRS capacity recommendation.
