Best DigitalOcean Droplet Plan for a 24/7 YouTube Bhajan Stream

A 2 GiB Basic Droplet is a plausible starting point for relaying pre-encoded bhajan audio. Encoding video continuously calls for testing and may warrant dedicated CPU.

For a 24/7 bhajan stream that relays audio already encoded elsewhere, DigitalOcean’s 2 GiB RAM, 1-vCPU Basic Droplet is a reasonable low-cost starting point: DigitalOcean listed it at $12/month with 2,000 GiB of transfer and 50 GiB SSD on October 3, 2026. If the Droplet itself will continuously encode video or run heavier processing, compare a dedicated-CPU option instead. Neither plan size guarantees uninterrupted streaming or proves it can encode a particular format; the right choice depends on what runs on the server.

Choose the Droplet based on what it has to do

The key distinction is whether the Droplet only relays a prepared stream or also creates and encodes the audio/video. Relaying a modest, pre-encoded audio stream is lighter work than continuously rendering visuals and encoding video.

  • Prepared audio or a simple pre-encoded feed: Start by evaluating the 2 GiB Basic plan. Its shared CPU may suit a workload that does not continuously saturate a processor, but actual performance depends on the workload and shared capacity.
  • Continuous video encoding, overlays, or other CPU-heavy processing: Compare the 4 GiB Basic plan and CPU-Optimized dedicated-CPU plans. Dedicated CPU provides more predictable access to CPU resources; it does not by itself establish that a given encoder, codec, resolution, or frame rate will work.
  • Unsure which applies: Identify the encoder and whether it is producing video on the Droplet. Test the intended stream configuration and observe CPU, memory, and stream health before relying on it around the clock.

DigitalOcean describes Basic Droplets as shared-CPU plans for workloads that underuse dedicated threads. Its plan guidance describes CPU-Optimized plans as suitable for CPU-intensive, predictable workloads, including video encoding. These are plan-selection guidelines, not a workload benchmark or uptime commitment. See DigitalOcean’s plan selection documentation.

Option Listed resources Listed price When to evaluate it
Basic, 2 GiB 1 vCPU, 2,000 GiB transfer, 50 GiB SSD $12/month Relaying a modest prepared stream, subject to testing
Basic, 4 GiB 2 vCPUs, 4,000 GiB transfer, 80 GiB SSD $24/month A heavier workload that may benefit from more memory and CPU, but still uses shared CPU
CPU-Optimized, dedicated CPU Specific resources and price depend on the selected plan; confirm on DigitalOcean’s pricing page Not stated here; check current pricing Sustained encoding or other CPU-intensive processing where predictable CPU access matters

DigitalOcean’s pricing page lists the Basic plan bundles at digitalocean.com/pricing/droplets. A larger Basic plan is not equivalent to dedicated CPU: choose based on the actual encoder workload and test, rather than assuming that added RAM alone solves sustained CPU demand.

Estimate outbound transfer before choosing

YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. At a constant 128 Kbps, the audio payload alone is approximately 1.38 decimal GB per day, or 41.5 decimal GB over 30 days. This is a calculation from YouTube’s recommended bitrate, not a provider measurement. Network protocols add overhead, and any video bitrate increases transfer use substantially.

CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Starter PRO Kit - 4GB RAM
  • Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
  • Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader
  • CanaKit Premium High-Gloss Raspberry Pi 4 Case with Integrated Fan Mount, CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • CanaKit 3.5A USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 Power Supply (US Plug) with Noise Filter, Set of Heat Sinks, Display Cable - 6 foot (Supports up to 4K60p)
  • CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)

For video, estimate monthly transfer from the total sustained outgoing bitrate and stream duration, then compare it with the Droplet’s included allowance. DigitalOcean lists $0.01 per additional GiB for outbound transfer above the allowance; transfer is pooled across Droplets at the team level. Bundled transfer and overage details are described in DigitalOcean’s pricing and bandwidth documentation.

Storage is relevant if you keep media or recordings on the server. If the Droplet only relays a feed and does not retain files, storage capacity may not be the deciding factor.

Prepare the YouTube stream and encoder

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
  2. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. In the encoder setup, use the stream URL and stream key provided for the event. YouTube treats the key as an encoder credential: keep it secret, do not publish it in a script or log, and regenerate it if exposed. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
  3. Configure the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports AAC or MP3 audio; for stereo audio it recommends 128 Kbps. For streams with video, YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings for the selected format.
  4. Allow network headroom. YouTube recommends about 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate and warns that connection disruption can break a stream. Test the real audio or audio/video configuration and monitor stream health using YouTube’s streaming tips.
  5. Plan archives separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24-hour event will produce one complete archive; verify current behavior and plan event segmentation or separate recording if an archive matters.

Keep the stream operating, not merely started

A Droplet plan is only one part of a 24/7 setup. The encoder or relay must keep running, the outbound connection must remain usable, and someone should be able to detect and respond to a failure. Decide how the process starts after a restart, what alerts indicate a dropped feed or unhealthy stream, and how you will recover if YouTube or the server disconnects. Test those recovery steps before depending on the stream.

Allow for the possibility that the chosen plan is insufficient: a sustained encoder can behave differently from a relay, and shared CPU capacity can vary with neighboring workloads. Increase resources or move to dedicated CPU only after checking the observed bottleneck; more memory does not necessarily fix a CPU-bound encoder.

Cost and billing details to check

The listed monthly price is not the entire operational decision. Include any outbound transfer overage in the estimate, and account for the fact that a powered-off Droplet continues to incur charges while its compute is reserved. DigitalOcean says destroying a Droplet ends that billing. Review the current pricing and bandwidth rules before deploying.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded bhajan recordings without keeping a home computer online, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos on YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
