The page may not have loaded, the site may have blocked the browser, the selected crawler may not support screenshots, or the Actor may have failed during capture or output. Start with the run logs and saved artifacts, then change one likely cause at a time. Without the Actor ID and version, target URL, inputs, logs, and image dimensions or file size, no single fix can be confirmed.
1. Locate the failure in the Actor run
Open the affected run in Apify Console and inspect the log lines around navigation and screenshot capture. Identify the exact target URL and note any navigation errors, timeouts, browser startup problems, or output errors. Apify recommends structured logs that include each page URL, and try/catch around operations that can fail before normal logging.

- If the log never reaches navigation, investigate startup, input parsing, or an earlier code error.
- If navigation begins but does not finish, investigate page access, loading behavior, and timeouts.
- If navigation succeeds but capture or saving fails, focus on screenshot code, browser compatibility, and output handling.
These clues narrow the stage; they do not by themselves establish the root cause.

Save or inspect the returned image, and capture the page HTML at the point where the Actor takes the screenshot if its code or settings allow it. Apify author Tomas Nosek explains: “Snapshots can be either screenshots or a copy of the page’s HTML.” A screenshot and HTML snapshot help distinguish a genuinely empty page from a blocked page, a changed layout, or a capture/output problem. - If the HTML is empty or shows an access-denied or challenge page, investigate what the target delivered to the Actor.
- If the HTML contains the expected content but the image does not, investigate capture timing, the screenshot implementation, and image retrieval or saving.
- If the image is transparent, truncated, or unusually small rather than truly blank, record its dimensions and file size; those details can point to a different problem than an empty page.
3. Check page loading and site blocking
Compare the Actor’s snapshot with the same URL in a normal browser. Dynamic content may appear only after navigation, and a site may recognize or block an automated browser. Apify lists dynamic loading and bot blocking among possible causes of Actor problems, but the evidence does not identify either as the cause for a particular blank image. Apify’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using logs and snapshots to investigate.
If the page fills in after an initial load, review the Actor’s existing wait strategy and configure it for the page behavior it actually needs. The correct condition depends on the Actor’s browser framework and the target site; a generic delay is not a universal fix. If a challenge or block appears in the snapshot, establish whether the site permits the requested automated access before changing browser settings.

4. Verify crawler and screenshot compatibility
If the workflow uses Apify Website Content Crawler, check its selected crawler mode. In a specific issue, a maintainer said Adaptive mode could not properly take website screenshots and recommended playwright:firefox; that response says the behavior was enforced in version 0.3.38. This is guidance for that Actor and issue, not a universal setting for every Apify screenshot Actor. Check the current Actor configuration and version before applying it. 5. Review recent changes and run resources
Consider whether the failure began after an Actor code change, dependency update, or change in execution platform. Apify identifies dependency updates and differences between local and platform runs as possible sources of Actor failures. Review the Actor’s configured memory and resource allocation if the browser fails to start or the run stalls; Apify documents that memory allocation affects CPU and disk capacity. Increasing memory is a diagnostic possibility, not a proven fix for a blank image. Apify run resource documentation.

6. Change one thing, then compare a repeat run
- Choose one representative URL that reproduces the blank result.
- Record the current Actor ID and version, input, run log, snapshot, and image dimensions or file size.
- Make one targeted change based on the evidence—for example, adjust a page wait condition, check a crawler mode, or investigate an observed navigation error.
- Run the same URL again and compare its logs and artifacts with the original.
- Keep the change only if the new evidence shows that it corrected the failure; otherwise revert it and investigate another cause.
Changing several settings at once makes it harder to tell which change mattered. Apify’s logging and snapshot recommendations provide a practical basis for comparing runs, but no particular change is verified for your Actor until your own repeat run confirms it.
7. Information to collect before escalating
There is no exact fix to name without the Actor ID and version, target URL, run logs, inputs, and returned image dimensions or file size. Include these details when asking the Actor maintainer or Apify support for help:

- Actor ID, version, and the relevant input values.
- The target URL and the approximate time or run ID of the failure.
- Log lines covering navigation, screenshot capture, and output saving.
- The screenshot and, if available, HTML snapshot from the capture point.
- Image dimensions and file size, plus whether the same run works on other URLs.
- Any recent code, dependency, crawler-mode, or resource-configuration changes.
This information helps separate a page-specific response from an Actor configuration, browser, or run-environment problem.

Does a blank screenshot prove the target site blocked the Actor?
No. A blocked page is one possible cause, but loading, crawler compatibility, code, output handling, and run-environment issues can also produce a blank result. Check the logs and snapshot to distinguish them.
Does the Website Content Crawler recommendation apply to every Apify screenshot Actor?
No. The playwright:firefox recommendation and Adaptive-mode limitation come from a specific Website Content Crawler issue. Verify the current settings and version of the Actor you use.
