Cyberpunk 2077 is the clearest choice if you want a cyberpunk setting, role-playing progression and an open world to explore: its official descriptions identify it as an open-world RPG set in Night City. The Ascent and Shadowrun Returns are worthwhile alternatives if you are open to different combat and world structures, but neither offers the same kind of open-world role-playing experience.
Cyberpunk 2077 is the closest match
Cyberpunk 2077 is set in Night City, a futuristic metropolis, and is described by its publisher as an open-world role-playing game. That combination makes it the strongest fit for players who want to move through a cyberpunk city while developing a character and taking on story-driven missions. The game is an action-adventure RPG, so expect combat and exploration alongside role-playing systems rather than a purely tactical or turn-based experience.

The Ascent: action-shooter combat with RPG progression
The Ascent combines a cyberpunk setting with action-shooter combat. Its official description highlights exploration across districts, cyberware, augmentations, skill-point progression and loot. Its solo and co-op options make it a natural pick if you want to play with someone else or prefer a shooter-led approach. The trade-off is format: it is not the same kind of open-world, first-person RPG as Cyberpunk 2077.

Shadowrun Returns: tactical role-playing in a cyberpunk-fantasy world
Shadowrun Returns is a single-player, turn-based tactical RPG set in a world that mixes cyberpunk with fantasy. Its classless skill system lets you develop a character in different directions, but the experience is organized around its story and tactical encounters—not free-roaming city exploration. Choose it for strategic combat and build choices, not as a direct open-world replacement.
Choose by the kind of play you want
- For a continuous city to explore: Start with Cyberpunk 2077; it is the direct open-world RPG match among these games.
- For shooter combat or co-op: Consider The Ascent, accepting its district-based action-shooter structure.
- For turn-based tactics and flexible skills: Choose Shadowrun Returns if a cyberpunk-fantasy setting appeals to you.
