For an ecommerce operation handling many support requests, the practical choice in the available product evidence is between Zendesk’s broader support operations and Gorgias’s ecommerce-oriented helpdesk. Zendesk’s documented Shopify workflows, routing, reporting, and channel breadth make it the more clearly supported fit for complex, multichannel teams. Gorgias is a plausible store-focused alternative, but its current features, prices, and limits need confirmation from its own product information. Neither is a universal winner: the right platform depends on your store, channels, workflows, staffing, peak ticket volume, and total cost.
How to compare support tools for high-volume ecommerce
Ticket volume alone does not determine which helpdesk will work. A platform has to let agents resolve the cases your store actually receives, keep order context available, and route exceptions to the right person. High-volume teams also need to understand how billing changes as contacts rise during promotions or seasonal peaks.

- Store workflows: Check how agents look up orders and handle status questions, address changes, cancellations, refunds, returns, and delivery problems in the ecommerce platform you use.
- Channels: Map the actual volume arriving through email, chat, social, messaging, and voice. Confirm availability for your region and plan.
- Automation and escalation: Test whether automation handles routine questions accurately and passes the customer’s context to a person when the issue is unusual or sensitive.
- Operations: Compare routing, reporting, self-service, integrations, and the administrative work needed to maintain them.
- Billing at peak: Estimate costs at ordinary and peak volume, including seats, ticket limits, overages, voice, and automation or AI add-ons.
The comparison below is a focused shortlist, not a complete market ranking or an independent performance test. Zendesk’s comparison of the two vendors is company-authored, and the available product evidence is more detailed for Zendesk than for Gorgias.

1. Zendesk: broader operations for multichannel support teams
Zendesk is the more clearly documented choice for an ecommerce business that needs support operations across channels, reporting, and more complex routing. Its Shopify integration page says agents can see customer and order details and fulfillment status, and can process refunds or cancellations from a sidebar. Those capabilities matter when a high-volume team would otherwise switch between its helpdesk and store admin for routine order cases. See Zendesk’s Shopify integration details.

Channels, routing, and reporting
Zendesk’s comparison with Gorgias describes Zendesk as covering voice, email, social, self-service, and other channels, and lists messaging and chat capabilities as well. It also presents Zendesk as offering broader routing, reporting, and integration options, including skills-based routing and customized reporting. These are vendor-authored comparisons, not neutral feature testing; verify the channels and functions available for your region and plan.
Automation and human handoff
Zendesk says its bots can use knowledge-base content to answer common questions and pass complex cases to live agents with customer context. For an ecommerce team, that handoff should be tested on exceptions such as a missing delivery, a disputed refund, or a return that falls outside policy—not just straightforward order-status questions. Automation volume by itself does not show whether customers receive correct resolutions.
Plans, price model, and limitations
The Zendesk comparison describes its billing as agent-based, meaning the per-seat model should be considered alongside staffing and peak coverage. The reviewed material does not establish current plan prices, plan-by-plan limits, or total cost for a particular team. Include seats, relevant add-ons, and seasonal staffing in a quote based on both ordinary and peak operations.
Zendesk’s published customer examples are illustrative rather than forecasts. Its comparison reports that Pair Eyewear deflected 76% of chat volume and 20% of inbound calls, increased NPS by 21%, and maintained 96% CSAT; these are vendor-reported results for that customer, whose move to Zendesk is described as occurring in 2020. Zendesk’s Shopify page says Spartan Race answered 99% of customer questions in the Zendesk/Shopify workspace and saved 30 seconds per ticket; the page also reports a 300% ecommerce sales increase in 2020, without clearly dating each support metric. These figures should not be treated as expected results for another business.

- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption

- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
Best fit
Consider Zendesk when the operation needs more channel breadth, structured routing, customized reporting, self-service, or support workflows across systems. A small team with simple, store-centric needs may not need that operational breadth; the choice should account for administration and total seat cost as well as capabilities.
2. Gorgias: ecommerce-oriented alternative with ticket-based billing
Gorgias is the ecommerce-oriented alternative surfaced in Zendesk’s comparison. That comparison describes order management and says the product can answer basic questions, support order tracking, and suggest knowledge articles. Its store focus may suit a team prioritizing order-related support, but the available evidence does not establish the current details of its integrations, supported store tiers, or feature availability by plan.
Channels and operational scope
In its own comparison, Zendesk says Gorgias covers email and social, with voice available as an add-on, and characterizes its social coverage, custom reporting, and routing as narrower or more limited than Zendesk’s. Treat this as vendor positioning rather than an independent assessment. Confirm the specific channels—including any social accounts or messaging channels your team uses—and whether the required routing and reporting are included in the plan you would buy.

Zendesk’s comparison characterizes Gorgias pricing as ticket-based and notes that charges may apply when ticket limits are exceeded. The current Gorgias pricing page is gorgias.com/pricing, but the available product information does not establish current prices, ticket allowances, or overage rates. Model the bill using your normal and peak ticket counts, and confirm what counts as a ticket and how add-ons affect the total. The official Gorgias helpdesk page is the place to confirm current product capabilities.

Best fit
Gorgias is worth considering when a business wants an ecommerce-oriented support platform and a ticket-based billing structure. That structure makes actual ticket volume and overage terms especially important for a high-volume or seasonal store. The reviewed material does not support a current price comparison or a complete feature-by-feature assessment against Zendesk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for your store and peak periods
Start with your store platform and real cases
Write down the ecommerce platform your agents use and the cases that consume the most time: order status, address changes, cancellations, refunds, returns, delivery exceptions, and repeat contacts. Have each vendor demonstrate those cases in the store platform and support channels you actually run. A feature label such as “order management” is not a substitute for seeing the exact actions agents can take.
Map the channel mix and escalation path
List the channels customers contact you through and identify where coverage is essential. Ask for a demonstration of a customer starting with automation and then reaching a live agent, with relevant order and conversation context preserved. Include sensitive or unusual cases in the demo so you can see where the bot stops and how the agent takes over.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCalculate ordinary and peak-period cost
Build two estimates: a typical month and a promotional or seasonal peak. For Zendesk, include the expected agent seats and any needed add-ons under its agent-based model. For Gorgias, include ticket volume and potential overages under the ticket-based model. Ask both vendors to specify the billing terms, included limits, add-ons, and any implementation costs for your proposed configuration.

Check operational requirements before migration
Confirm plan restrictions and regional availability for channels, supported ecommerce platforms, data retention and access controls, reporting exports, migration effort, and contract terms. These details can determine whether the tool will work in production even when its headline features appear suitable.
Evidence and what it can establish
The comparison and case outcomes cited above come from Zendesk’s vendor-authored pages, including its comparison updated September 4, 2026. They describe product positioning and individual customer examples, not a controlled comparison of ticket-resolution performance. The current Gorgias pages are available, but their prices and detailed limits are not established in the information summarized here. Kustomer appears only as a secondary vendor-authored comparison source and is not documented in enough detail here to support a product recommendation or a numbered entry. No independent benchmark or comprehensive current price survey establishes a universal winner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better for high-volume ecommerce support, Zendesk or Gorgias?
Zendesk is the more clearly documented fit here for teams needing broader channels, routing, reporting, and Shopify order workflows. Gorgias is the ecommerce-oriented alternative, but its current features and costs need confirmation. The better choice depends on your store, workflows, staffing, and peak billing.

Does Zendesk integrate with Shopify for refunds and cancellations?
Zendesk’s Shopify integration page describes customer and order details, fulfillment status, and refund or cancellation actions in an agent sidebar: Zendesk’s integration page.
How should an ecommerce business compare agent-based and ticket-based pricing?
Estimate costs for both an ordinary month and a peak period. Include agent seats and add-ons for an agent-based model; for ticket-based billing, include ticket allowances and possible overages. Confirm current terms with the vendor because the reviewed comparison does not provide current plan prices.
Are Zendesk’s Pair Eyewear results typical?
No general outcome can be inferred from that case. The percentages are results Zendesk reports for Pair Eyewear, not independent benchmarks or a forecast for another store.
