Best Cordless Power Drills: Which One Offers the Best Value for Your Work?

A practical guide to cordless drill value picks, hammer-drill use, battery compatibility, weight and why different test guides choose different winners.

The best rechargeable power drill depends on what you need it to do. For a value-focused home kit, Popular Mechanics’ 2026 guide selects the Skil PWRCORE drill driver; its overall pick is Milwaukee’s M18 2904 hammer drill. In a separate test group, Pro Tool Reviews names the FLEX FX1271T its top cordless drill and the Ryobi PBLHM102 its best-for-the-money choice. These are useful starting points, not a single universal ranking: choose by task, handling, kit contents and whether you already own compatible batteries.

Which cordless drill is the best value?

For ordinary home repairs and woodworking, the Skil PWRCORE drill driver kit is the clearest value-oriented recommendation in the cited 2026 US guide. Popular Mechanics reports 400 inch-pounds of torque, a maximum speed of 1,800 rpm and a tool-only weight of 2.23 lb; the guide listed the kit at $80 when published. In its tests, the drill drove three-inch screws and made a 1/2-inch hole through a 2×4 in three seconds. Its performance with a 1-inch spade bit was less consistent: the bit bound every couple of holes.

That limitation matters if your projects regularly call for larger bits or prolonged heavy drilling. For broader capability, Popular Mechanics names the Milwaukee M18 2904 its best overall, while Pro Tool Reviews’ 2025 head-to-head gives its top spot to the FLEX FX1271T. Pro Tool Reviews names the Ryobi PBLHM102 best for the money in its own test group. The results reflect different products and test methods, so they should not be read as a shared league table.

How the leading picks differ

Model and source What the source reports Best fit and qualification
Skil PWRCORE drill driver kit — Popular Mechanics, 2026 400 in-lb torque; up to 1,800 rpm; 2.23 lb tool-only; $80 kit price at the time of the guide. Drove three-inch screws and drilled a 1/2-inch hole through a 2×4 in three seconds; 1-inch spade-bit drilling sometimes bound. Value-focused household drilling and fastening. Check the exact model and current bundle; the larger-bit limitation may matter for demanding work.
Milwaukee M18 2904 hammer drill — Popular Mechanics, 2026 1,400 in-lb torque; up to 2,100 rpm; 3.3 lb; under seven inches long. The guide notes an auto-stop feature and strong results with twist bits, spade bits and 1/4-inch concrete holes. Best overall in that guide’s test group. Its result is not a universal ranking.
FLEX FX1271T — Pro Tool Reviews, 2025 1,400 in-lb maximum torque; 0–700/2,500 rpm; 7.1 inches long; 3.7 lb bare; $149 bare tool and $249–$279 kit prices as listed in the review. It earned the highest overall performance score in that test group using a 6.0Ah Stacked Lithium battery, with a heavier tested setup. Top cordless drill in Pro Tool Reviews’ head-to-head. The bare-tool weight and price do not describe the heavier battery-equipped test setup.
Ryobi PBLHM102 — Pro Tool Reviews, 2025 850 in-lb maximum torque; 0–700/2,150 rpm; 3.1 lb bare; $129 bare tool and $179 kit price as listed in the review. Best-for-the-money designation in that review’s test and price comparison; not necessarily the right choice for every task.

The prices above are historical figures from the cited US guides, not guaranteed current prices. Product bundles and local availability can change; verify the exact model, included battery and charger, and live price before buying.

Choose the drill type for the material

Drill/driver for everyday jobs

A standard drill/driver handles common household holes and screw-driving. It is a practical choice for furniture assembly, repairs, woodworking and general DIY when you do not need a hammer action. A drill’s usefulness comes from doing both jobs: making holes and driving fasteners. The highest torque figure alone does not tell you how well a tool suits your projects.

Hammer drill for masonry

A hammer or combi drill adds a hammering action intended to help drill masonry. It can be useful for jobs such as making holes in brick or concrete, but the label does not mean every model will perform equally—or that a cordless drill is the right tool for every masonry job. Compare results for the specific material and hole size you expect to tackle. Popular Mechanics reports concrete-hole testing for its Milwaukee pick; do not assume that evidence applies to the other models.

What to check before buying

  • Your typical jobs: List the materials, hole sizes and fasteners you use most. Occasional small holes call for a different balance of price and power than repeated large-bit drilling.
  • Handling: Compare size and weight, and distinguish bare-tool weight from weight with the battery attached. A more powerful drill can also be heavier and costlier.
  • Kit contents: Confirm whether the price includes batteries and a charger. A bare tool may require both to be purchased separately.
  • Battery platform: If you already own cordless tools, check whether the drill uses the exact battery platform you have. Similar voltage labels do not establish cross-brand compatibility.
  • Capacity and controls: Check the chuck capacity, supported bit sizes, speed settings and clutch or torque settings in the model’s specifications. A model’s torque number is not a substitute for checking whether it handles your bits and tasks.
  • Total cost: Compare the complete kit you need, not only the lowest bare-tool price. Entering a new battery platform can change the value calculation.

Why drill recommendations disagree

Popular Mechanics describes tests involving holes in lumber, three-inch screws and masonry drilling with hammer drills. Pro Tool Reviews reports a separate head-to-head group and timed task results. Each guide’s winning model is therefore the winner under its own selection of drills and evaluation method. For a wider UK-market view, Which?’s cordless-drill guide lists models, drill types, battery platforms, capacity, bare weight and torque-setting counts; model test dates vary, including tests as recent as August 2026 and others in 2024. Treat that as UK-market coverage rather than a direct extension of US prices or product variants.

A quick way to narrow the choice

  1. Decide whether you need hammer action. If masonry drilling is part of the job, compare hammer drills and look for evidence tied to the material and hole size. Otherwise, a standard drill/driver may be enough.
  2. Check your existing battery platform. A compatible bare tool may make sense if you already have batteries and a charger. If not, compare complete kits.
  3. Match size and weight to your work. Consider battery-equipped handling and whether you need to work in tight spaces or for long periods.
  4. Compare task evidence, not just headline torque. Look for drilling and screw-driving results that resemble your likely projects, and note which test group and date produced them.
  5. Verify the exact current offer. Confirm model number, included accessories, battery and charger, regional variant, availability and price.

For a straightforward household kit, the Skil pick is a reasonable value starting point if its larger-bit limitation is acceptable. For heavier or masonry-oriented work, compare the Milwaukee and other hammer-drill options against your actual tasks; for a different high-performance test result, consider how the FLEX and Ryobi recommendations fit your battery needs and budget. The cited guides support these as distinct recommendations, not a definitive winner for every buyer.
