Start with controls that feel comfortable, use Quick Skills if you are new to fighting games, and test your inputs in Training Mode before settling on a layout. You can customize buttons from Character Select, the Pause Menu, or Options, and the game supports PS5-compatible arcade sticks and leverless controllers.
How to change your controller buttons
PlayStation says button configuration is available from three places: Character Select, the mid-match Pause Menu, and Options. Use whichever is convenient, then check your assigned actions in Training Mode.

The PlayStation Store listing also notes basic controller remapping, some stick-inversion options, and the ability to play without controller vibration or adaptive trigger effects. It does not specify a complete per-button remapping matrix, so check the options shown in your current game build to see exactly what can be reassigned.

Quick Skills or Command Inputs?
If you are learning the game or fighting games generally, begin with Quick Skills. They execute with one button, and the game director’s beginner guide recommends them as a way to learn the fundamentals. The same guide says Command Inputs offer slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge. Those are the guide’s stated trade-offs, not results from an independent performance test.
A practical approach is to use Quick Skills while learning character movement and team mechanics, then try Command Inputs for moves you can execute reliably. The Quick Skill button itself can be customized in control settings.

Kazuto Sekine, Game Director and Lead Battle Designer at Arc System Works, wrote: “If you’re new to fighting games, we recommend starting with Quick Skills while you learn the fundamentals. As you grow more comfortable, try incorporating Command Inputs into your combos for even greater rewards.” This guidance appears in the PlayStation.Blog beginner’s guide, published July 20, 2026.
Choose a controller by comfort, not an unproven performance claim
PlayStation confirms support for any PlayStation 5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller. That makes them valid alternatives to a standard pad, but the official sources do not compare them or establish that one input type is competitively superior.
Rank #3
- Wired Controller optimized for fighting games

Pick the device that lets you reach frequent actions naturally and execute the inputs you intend. Familiarity, hand comfort, remapping needs, and whether you want to learn motion inputs are useful decision points. If a control feels awkward, adjust the layout rather than assuming a different controller will automatically improve performance.
For a new or additional controller, verify that the particular model is PS5-compatible. The general support statement does not certify every individual product model.
Rank #4

Use Training Mode to check whether a layout works
Training Mode provides command-input, frame-data, and damage displays, along with scenario presets and bot settings that support record and replay. These tools let you check whether you can perform an input consistently and inspect what happened, instead of relying on a supposedly universal layout.
- Set your buttons from Character Select, the Pause Menu, or Options.
- In Training Mode, use the command-input display to confirm the game registers the motion or button sequence you intended.
- Try relevant scenario presets and bot settings, including record/replay, to practise a specific situation.
- Use the damage and frame-data displays to examine the move or sequence you are practising; change your layout if reaching an input is uncomfortable or inconsistent.
PlayStation also describes local and online friend training, which can provide practice against another person. Training feedback helps you assess your own comfort and execution; it is not a published comparison of controller latency or competitive results.

Learn the team controls from the in-game reminders
The July 20, 2026 beginner guide uses Light (□), Medium (△), and Heavy (○) as examples, and explains that repeated Light, Medium, or Heavy attacks can link into stronger follow-ups. It also describes × as an Assemble Assist and directional input plus L2 as the character-switch command; the assist direction selects the second, third, or fourth teammate.
Those button examples come from the guide’s Open Beta article. If the current build’s on-screen reminders show different bindings, follow the controls displayed in your game and adjust them in settings as needed.
Is there one best controller setting?
No single layout or controller is established as best by the official sources cited here. Start with a familiar input style, remap actions to suit your hands, and use Training Mode to see whether the controls work reliably for you. Choose Quick Skills for an easier entry point or practise Command Inputs for the additional damage and Skill Gauge generation described in the official guide.
