Choose a USB-C Power Delivery (USB-PD) charger with output suited to your iPhone, then check how much power it supplies when multiple ports are in use. The right choice depends on your iPhone’s model and connector, how many devices you’ll charge, and the plug type you need. Apple’s guidance supports these compatibility checks; it does not establish which third-party charger is the smallest or best-performing.
Start with your iPhone model and charging port
iPhone 15 and later use USB-C for wired charging. Earlier models use Lightning, so Apple’s fast-charge setup for them requires a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. Check the connector before buying: a USB-C charger does not necessarily include the cable you need. Apple’s fast-charge guidance and power-adapter guidance explain the arrangements by model.

- iPhone 15 and later: use a USB-C cable and a compliant USB-C adapter.
- Earlier iPhone models: use a USB-C-to-Lightning cable for the fast-charge setup Apple describes.
When comparing listings, confirm whether a cable is included and whether its ends match both the charger and phone. The Apple guidance establishes cable compatibility, not what a third-party charger’s box contains.
What wattage USB-C charger do you need?
Choose output based on the iPhone model and the charging target you care about. Apple specifies at least 20W for fast charging iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation), and later models in its power-adapter guidance. Its newer model-specific fast-charge claims use different conditions:
#1 Best Overall
- DESIGNED BY APPLE — This 20W USB‑C Compact Power Adapter offers fast, efficient charging at home, in the office, or on the go.
- FAST AND CONVENIENT CHARGING — Pair with iPhone 8 or later for fast charging — up to 50 percent battery in around 30 minutes* for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro when paired with the 30W USB-C Power Adapter. Compatible with any USB-C enabled device.
- Testing conducted by Apple in August 2024 using preproduction iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max units and software, and Apple MagSafe Chargers (1-meter Model A2580 and 2-meter Model A3250) with Apple USB-C Power Adapter (30W Model A2164). Fast-charge testing conducted with drained iPhone units. Times measured from the appearance of the Apple logo as the unit started up. Charge time varies with settings and environmental factors; actual results will vary.

| iPhone models | Apple’s stated fast-charge condition | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation), and later models | At least 20W for fast charging | Apple’s current Power adapters for iPhone guidance, accessed 2026. |
| iPhone 17e and iPhone Air | Up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W-or-higher adapter | Apple’s current fast-charge guidance; test conducted January 2026 for iPhone 17e. Actual time varies with settings and environmental factors. |
| iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max | Up to 50% in around 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher adapter | Apple’s current fast-charge guidance; test conducted July 2025 using preproduction devices and drained units. Actual time varies with settings and environmental factors. |
These are model-specific conditions and Apple test results, not a promise that every iPhone will reach the stated level in that time. Settings and environmental factors affect charging, and Apple notes that fast charging might not work in conditions that are too cold or too hot. See Apple’s fast-charge guidance for details.
For earlier iPhone models, Apple describes fast charging with an Apple 18W-or-greater adapter or a comparable USB-PD adapter and a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. Do not treat a USB-C port or a wattage figure alone as proof that a charger supports the fast-charge arrangement for your phone.

Check USB-PD support and output sharing
For a third-party adapter, look for USB Power Delivery support if you want the fast-charge setup Apple describes. Apple permits comparable third-party USB-PD adapters; that guidance is not an endorsement of any particular product or marketplace listing.

If the charger has multiple ports, check the output available when you use them together, not just its headline maximum. Apple notes that a charger or hub may reduce maximum output when other devices share power. Its 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapter guidance describes how output is allocated between connected devices. A multiport charger can be convenient, but the iPhone may receive less power when another device is plugged in.

How to judge whether a charger is genuinely compact
Wattage does not tell you a charger’s size or weight, and product photos are not a reliable basis for ranking portability. Compare documented dimensions and weight for the exact model and regional version you plan to buy. If the manufacturer does not state them, treat compactness as unverified rather than assuming a higher- or lower-wattage adapter will be smaller.
Also check the plug configuration for your region. A charger’s shape and usability in a wall outlet can differ by plug type, so dimensions alone may not tell the whole travel story.

Make safety and condition part of the choice
Apple says third-party adapters should comply with applicable regulations and safety standards. Use undamaged cables and chargers, keep moisture away while charging, and do not block ventilation. Apple warns that damaged equipment or charging when moisture is present can cause fire, electric shock, injury, or damage to the iPhone or other property. See Apple’s iPhone safety guidance.

- Identify the phone: confirm the iPhone model and whether its charging port is USB-C or Lightning.
- Set the charging target: use Apple’s model-specific wattage guidance rather than choosing by a generic “fast charger” label.
- Verify the protocol: for a third-party charger, check for USB-PD support.
- Check shared-port performance: confirm how much output remains when you connect other devices.
- Verify portability and travel fit: compare published dimensions and weight, plus the plug type for your region.
- Confirm what’s included: make sure you have a compatible cable if one is not supplied.
- Check safety and condition: choose an adapter that meets applicable standards and avoid damaged equipment.
Apple’s 20W USB-C power adapter is a reference option in its guidance, while compliant third-party USB-PD adapters are also permitted. For iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, choose 40W or higher if you are aiming for Apple’s cited around-20-minute-to-50% test condition; for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, Apple cites 20W or higher for its 30-minute claim.
