For most adults, an appropriate over-the-counter (OTC) medicine can temporarily ease a specific symptom such as fever, aches, congestion or cough. Choose by symptom, check every active ingredient and ask a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have a chronic condition.
Which tablets help which symptoms?
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance supports symptom-based treatment rather than a universally “best” brand. The options below describe what the evidence supports for adults; they are not individualized prescribing advice.

| Symptom or situation | Tablet category | What it may do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fever, headache or body aches | Acetaminophen or an NSAID such as ibuprofen | May reduce fever and relieve pain temporarily. | Use only as the label directs. Ask a clinician or pharmacist which option is suitable if you take other medicines or have medical conditions. |
| Blocked or runny nose, with cough | Pseudoephedrine combined with a first-generation antihistamine | CDC adult outpatient guidance says this combination may provide short-term relief of nasal symptoms and cough. | It is not suitable for everyone, and the guidance does not establish a fastest product or resolve every contraindication. |
| Several symptoms at once | Multi-symptom cold/flu tablet | May combine ingredients aimed at pain, fever, congestion or cough. | No named combination is established as best. Duplicate ingredients are possible if you also take a separate pain reliever or another cold product. |
| Suspected influenza in a higher-risk person | Prescription antiviral medicine | Can lessen flu symptoms and shorten illness by about one day when prescribed appropriately. | This is not an ordinary OTC purchase. Treatment works best when started within one to two days after symptoms begin. |
How to choose an OTC cold or flu tablet safely
- Identify the main problem. Select a product aimed at the symptom that is actually bothering you instead of automatically choosing an all-in-one formula.
- Read the “active ingredients” panel. Check whether the tablet contains acetaminophen, an NSAID, a decongestant, an antihistamine or another ingredient you already use.
- Follow the package directions exactly. Do not take more often or in larger amounts because symptoms are severe.
- Check with a pharmacist or healthcare provider. Tell them about prescription medicines, OTC products, pregnancy, allergies and chronic conditions before choosing a product.
- Keep products away from children. Adult tablets and adult-strength formulations should not be given to children unless a healthcare professional supplies specific instructions.
Do cold and flu tablets make you recover faster?
Usually, no. CDC’s common-cold treatment guidance says, “OTC medicines may provide temporary relief of symptoms, but will not cure your illness.” Symptom relief can make rest and normal activities easier, but it is not evidence that the virus has cleared more quickly.

Flu and a common cold are not interchangeable treatment labels. CDC says antiviral drugs work best when started within one to two days after flu symptoms begin. Contact a healthcare provider promptly if flu is possible and you are at increased risk of serious complications, including people who are pregnant or who have asthma or other chronic lung disease, diabetes or heart disease. Later treatment can still help some higher-risk or hospitalized patients.

Prescription antivirals are different from OTC tablets: they act against influenza and must be evaluated and prescribed by a clinician. If COVID-19 is also possible, ask promptly about testing and treatment options because timing can matter.
Children need different precautions
CDC does not recommend OTC cough and cold medicines for children younger than six because of potentially serious, sometimes life-threatening side effects. Do not split or adapt an adult cold-and-flu tablet for a child.

- Trouble breathing or fast breathing
- Signs of dehydration
- Fever lasting longer than four days
- Symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement
- Symptoms that improve and then return or get worse
- A chronic medical condition that is worsening
Higher-risk people should contact a clinician promptly when flu or COVID-19 is possible rather than waiting for OTC treatment to fail.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
CDC reports that U.S. adults average two to three colds per year (common-cold overview dated February 19, 2026). Its guidance supports temporary, symptom-specific relief and time-sensitive prescription treatment for influenza. It does not establish that one commercial tablet, brand or “all-in-one” formula works fastest, and it does not provide a basis for individualized dosing or a complete interaction checklist.
