Valve’s SteamOS 0.4.3 beta update for Steam Frame claims up to 12% better power efficiency and battery lifetime during both streamed and local gameplay. Valve says the result varies with framerate and content, and its announcement does not provide test conditions or an independent runtime measurement.
What SteamOS 0.4.3 changes
Valve dated the SteamOS 0.4.3 announcement October 1, 2026, and released it through the beta channel for Steam Frame. The headline change is improved power efficiency and battery lifetime in two use cases:

The “up to 12%” figure is a release-note claim, not a promise that every headset or game will last 12% longer. Valve does not state a baseline runtime, workload, framerate, test method or measurement date in these notes, so the percentage cannot be converted reliably into extra hours of play.
Does the update help both streaming and local games?
Yes. Valve explicitly includes both streamed play and local gameplay in the battery-efficiency claim. Steam Frame is a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a Steam library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. That makes the distinction important: the note is not limited to PC streaming, nor does it identify one mode as receiving a larger improvement.

How to install the beta
To opt into the SteamOS 0.4.3 beta on Steam Frame:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Update Channel.
- Choose the beta channel and apply the available update.
Valve says the features are still being tested. Beta software can change before a stable release, so users who depend on predictable headset behavior may prefer to remain on the stable channel until the update is finalized.
Other change: VR streaming reliability
The same release notes mention additional VR streaming reliability work, including fixes for Error 17 connection problems. Valve says those fixes also require SteamVR 2.18.2 or later on the PC. At the time of the SteamOS announcement, that SteamVR version was available on the SteamVR beta branch, so both the headset and PC software may need beta participation.

What the 12% figure does—and does not—tell you
- It does tell you: Valve is targeting lower power use and longer battery life in both supported play modes.
- It does not tell you: a guaranteed number of additional minutes or hours.
- It does not establish: that every title, framerate or streaming configuration will see the maximum gain.
- It is not independent validation: the announcement contains no outside benchmark or published test protocol.
For a particular game, compare battery behavior before and after updating under the same framerate, brightness, wireless conditions and play mode. That kind of personal comparison can show whether the beta helps your setup, but it should not be treated as confirmation that all Steam Frame users will obtain the headline percentage.
