If you want co-op space games with exploration, the best fit depends on what your group means by “explore.” No Man’s Sky offers the broadest galaxy-scale journey; Astroneer turns planetary exploration into a shared building project; and Deep Rock Galactic makes exploration a combat-heavy team mission. Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions, another option in the Astroneer universe, is already listed as a 2026 release—not a game you still need to wait for.
Choose by the kind of exploration your group wants
| Game | Exploration style | Co-op details established by the cited listings | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Man’s Sky | Self-directed travel across a procedurally generated galaxy, with planetary discoveries, resource gathering, ships, suits and equipment. | Hello Games says players can team up with friends or join random travellers, and that cross-play lets people play together across platforms. A maximum party size is not stated on the cited page. | Groups who want a wide-ranging, open-ended journey and are comfortable with survival pressures. |
| Astroneer | Planetary exploration, terrain shaping, vehicles, crafting and collaborative base-building. | Four-player online co-op is listed by PlayStation and Nintendo. System Era lists Steam, Xbox Play Anywhere/Windows, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch; check specific devices before assuming they can play together. | Friends who want to shape worlds and build shared projects more than travel in realistic starships. |
| Deep Rock Galactic | Procedurally generated cave missions built around mining, destructible environments and fighting hostile creatures. | The PlayStation listing describes one-to-four-player co-op and says PS Plus is required for online play on PlayStation. | Groups who prefer coordinated action, distinct team roles and replayable objectives. |
| Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions | Expeditions across alien worlds, gathering resources and developing gear and loadouts. | Nintendo lists online co-op and cross-platform play. Its Switch 2 search listing gave a June 11, 2026 release date; the listing’s 1–100 online-player field should not be read as a normal squad size. | Players interested in a newer, expedition-focused game in the Astroneer universe. |
For a broad, self-directed galaxy: No Man’s Sky
No Man’s Sky is the clearest choice if your group wants to decide where to go and what to pursue. Hello Games describes it as exploration and survival in an infinite, procedurally generated galaxy. Its official press page describes seamless travel between planetary surfaces and other worlds, generated discoveries, resource gathering, and ships, suits and equipment. Players can join friends or random travellers.

Cross-play is a central reason to consider it when friends own different platforms. Hello Games puts it plainly: “Thanks to cross-play, you can play together no matter which platform you’re on.” That is the company’s description; check compatibility for your particular platforms and editions before buying. The cited page does not establish a maximum group size, so there is no reliable party-size figure to give here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe trade-off is that this is not just a sightseeing trip: the game is also a survival experience. Hello Games’ press page has release headings through “THE SWARM (V6.4),” evidence of ongoing updates, but it is not a promise of a particular update schedule or future feature.

For planetary projects and building together: Astroneer
Astroneer is a cooperative planetary sandbox rather than a realistic starship simulator. Its appeal is hands-on world interaction: shape terrain, explore handcrafted planets, use vehicles, and turn gathered materials into bases and other projects. Nintendo’s editorial listing describes terrain shaping, handcrafted planets, vehicles and four-player online co-op. PlayStation’s listing also specifies four-player online drop-in/drop-out co-op, while System Era’s support FAQ names Steam, Xbox Play Anywhere/Windows, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
Choose it if your group enjoys shared goals that grow over time: building industrial bases, crafting and experimenting with the terrain. Steam’s store page also categorizes it around exploration, base building, crafting and automation. The platform list alone is not a cross-play compatibility matrix, so confirm that the versions your group owns can connect.

- For 2-6 players
- Traditional play or one-hour version
- Great family fun
- Package dimension : 15.375" L x 10.625" W x 2.0625" H
For shorter, combat-focused expeditions: Deep Rock Galactic
Deep Rock Galactic gives exploration a very different shape. Rather than roaming quietly across an open galaxy, players tackle cave missions with generated environments, mining, destructible terrain and hostile creatures. Its four distinct classes make coordination part of the action. The official PlayStation listing describes one-to-four-player co-op and says PS Plus is required for online play on that platform; do not assume that subscription rule applies to other platforms.
This is the pick for a group that wants a clear mission, team roles and combat alongside exploration. If the goal is open-ended travel or a quiet shared building sandbox, the other games are closer matches.

For a newer expedition game in the Astroneer universe: Starseeker
Starseeker: Astroneer Expeditions is listed as a 2026 release, with Nintendo’s official Switch 2 search listing giving June 11, 2026. Nintendo describes crews exploring alien worlds, completing expeditions, collecting resources and developing gear and loadouts; its listing specifies online co-op and cross-platform play.
The listing also shows 1–100 online players, but that broad platform field does not establish the size of an ordinary co-op squad. Treat it as a listing-level online-player figure, not a promise that one party can contain 100 players. Since platform support and release availability can vary by region, check the store page for your device before purchasing.

Check these details before you buy
- Platform and edition: Verify the game is available for each player’s device and that those specific versions support playing together. A title’s availability on several platforms does not by itself prove cross-play.
- Online requirements: Check the relevant platform store for subscription requirements. The cited PS Plus requirement applies to online play on PlayStation for Deep Rock Galactic, not universally across platforms.
- Group size: Use a clearly stated co-op limit where one is given, such as Astroneer’s four-player online co-op. Do not infer a party limit from a broad online-player field, or assume a limit for No Man’s Sky that its cited page does not state.
- Current availability and price: Store listings, prices, editions and online policies can change. Check the current listing for your region and device rather than relying on an old price or platform summary.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
