Best Co-Op Games on Steam to Play While You Wait for a New Release

Find a Steam co-op game that fits your group, from a two-player story to online horror, squad combat, or a world to revisit over multiple sessions.

The best Steam co-op game for your group depends on who is playing and how much time you have: choose It Takes Two for a two-person story, Peak for hazardous climbs, R.E.P.O. for online horror, or Helldivers 2 for coordinated squad combat. If you want a shared world to return to over multiple sessions, consider longer-running options such as Valheim or Stardew Valley. Check each Steam listing for current player limits and online or local play before buying; co-op does not automatically mean couch co-op.

Pick by group size and the kind of session you want

There is no one best choice for every group. First decide whether you need a game for exactly two people or a larger party, then choose between a contained session, a story campaign, and a world you can keep building together. GameSpot describes the appeal as playing with friends on Steam “where you work together to achieve a goal.” That goal can mean solving a story’s challenges, surviving a climb, retrieving objects, or fighting as a squad.

  • Two players and a story: look at It Takes Two.
  • A social, hazard-filled climb: consider Peak.
  • Online horror and teamwork under pressure: consider R.E.P.O..
  • Squad combat: consider Helldivers 2.
  • A world to revisit over time: browse options such as Valheim, Stardew Valley, or Don’t Starve Together.

Co-op games by use case

It Takes Two: a two-player story

It Takes Two is a story-driven option for a pair. GameSpot describes it as a two-player-only game, so it is not a fit if your group needs room for a third friend. Check its current Steam listing for purchase details and the supported co-op arrangement before starting.

Peak: cooperative climbing with hazards

Peak centers on climbing through hazards with friends. GameSpot says the environment changes daily, while GamesRadar notes proximity voice chat as part of the social play. That makes it a natural pick for a group that wants to coordinate during a climb rather than settle into a long narrative campaign. The cited coverage describes the loop, not a guarantee that every group will enjoy it.

R.E.P.O.: online horror and object retrieval

R.E.P.O. is an online co-op horror game built around retrieving objects with physics-based interactions. Its Steam listing describes support for up to six players and proximity voice chat, and marks it as Early Access. Early Access means the game is still in development and its features may change; check the listing for its current status before you commit.

Helldivers 2: coordinated squad combat

Helldivers 2 is a squad-based online shooter. GamesRadar notes that friendly fire is always on, so teammates can hurt one another as well as enemies. That can suit a group looking for chaotic, coordinated combat, but may frustrate players who want a forgiving shooter. Check the Steam listing for current player limits, cross-play details, and system requirements.

Longer-running worlds: survival, building, and shared routines

If your group wants a game to return to across multiple sessions, GameGeeker’s editorial shortlist includes Baldur’s Gate 3, Deep Rock Galactic, Lethal Company, Valheim, Stardew Valley, Sea of Thieves, and Don’t Starve Together. These span different genres and play styles, so treat that list as a starting point rather than a guarantee that any particular title fits your group. Check each game’s Steam page for player count, supported co-op modes, and current requirements.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
  • Player count: confirm the number of people supported in the mode you plan to use.
  • Play arrangement: distinguish online play from LAN, shared-screen, or split-screen support. Verify the exact option on the game’s current listing.
  • Time commitment: decide whether your group wants a self-contained session, a longer story, or a persistent world. Do not assume a game’s session length without checking its format.
  • Access and development status: note whether a game is Early Access, as with R.E.P.O. according to its Steam listing, and account for possible feature changes.
  • Practical compatibility: check operating-system and hardware requirements, price, and cross-play support for the version and devices your group uses. Prices and availability can change.

How to make the call

  1. Count the players who will actually join. For a two-person-only choice such as It Takes Two, make sure your group is happy to play as a pair.
  2. Agree on the mood: narrative, climbing, horror, squad shooting, or a world you can revisit.
  3. Decide whether you need one-off sessions or a continuing campaign or world.
  4. Open the current Steam listing for each candidate and verify player count, online versus local support, system requirements, and any Early Access label.
  5. Choose the game whose format fits your group, rather than relying on a universal ranking.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
