One shared copy of a game lets only one family member play that title at a time. To play the same co-op game simultaneously, your Steam Family needs two eligible copies. Steam calls its current system Steam Families; it gives members access to one another’s eligible games, but it does not transfer ownership or override a game’s sharing restrictions.
What Steam Families changes—and what it does not
Steam Families replaced the older Steam Family Sharing system and Family View. A family can have up to six members, and eligible games owned by its members appear in a shared family library. Each game remains owned by the account that bought it, and each player launches games from their own Steam account. Steam says families are intended to contain “your immediate family”; participation requirements may change as Steam monitors usage.

The practical rule is about copies of the same game, not a lock on the owner’s whole library. Steam’s example is Portal 2: with one family copy, one member can play it at a time; with a second family-owned copy, another member can play simultaneously. Meanwhile, members can play different eligible family games at the same time.

Yes, if the family has at least two copies available to play and the game is eligible for sharing. If just one member owns a copy, that copy can be in use by only one family member at a time. Steam’s rule applies whether the players plan to use online co-op or another multiplayer mode; it is the number of usable copies of that title that matters.

If more than one member owns the title, Steam lets a player choose which member’s copy to launch. If the chosen copy is already in use, Steam may use another available copy. Differences in DLC between copies can affect whether a save works, so check the relevant game and add-on details when switching copies.
Check whether the game can be shared
Sharing is not automatic for every Steam game. Publishers control eligibility and can opt out, and technical or account requirements can prevent sharing. Steam lists these reasons a game or add-on may be unavailable:

- The game requires an additional third-party key, account, or subscription.
- The game is free to play, or the item is DLC for a free-to-play game.
- The game or DLC is region-restricted.
- The game is unsupported on the other member’s operating system.
- The publisher has excluded it from sharing.
- The owner has marked the game private.
Older sharing exclusions carry forward to Steam Families, and publisher settings can change. Check the title’s current Steam Store listing and whether it appears in the family library before making plans around a particular co-op game. Do not assume that a game is shareable just because it is in a family member’s personal library.

Accounts, saves, achievements, and DLC
Each person plays on their own Steam account, so achievements are earned on that player’s account. Save behavior depends on the game. Shareable DLC owned by the person whose copy is being borrowed may be available to the borrower, but only if the publisher has marked that DLC as shareable. A save may not work as expected if the copies available to the family have different DLC.

Offline play and household rules
Steam says a family-library game can be played offline only when that game supports Family Sharing. An online service or other game-specific requirement may still affect whether a title works without a connection.
Steam Families is designed for a household, not as an unrestricted sharing group. Adults can leave a family, but Steam’s current FAQ says they must wait one year from joining before creating or joining another family. A vacated family slot also has a one-year cooldown before a new member can occupy it. Someone may rejoin the last family they left without waiting if it has fewer than six members. Household activity checks and cooldowns can prevent an invite from working.

Steam Families vs. Remote Play Together
These features solve different problems:

Before relying on Remote Play Together, check whether the specific game supports the local co-op mode you want. It is a way to play a local multiplayer game online, not a way for two family members to use one family copy as independent copies of the title.

- Want to play different games? Each member can play a different eligible game from the family library at the same time.
- Want to play the same game simultaneously? Make sure the family has two available copies of that title.
- Only one copy, but the game has local co-op? Check whether Remote Play Together supports the game and mode you want; this is separate from Steam Families.
- Before inviting someone or starting a session? Confirm the game’s current sharing eligibility, needed DLC, operating-system support, and any connection or account requirements.
