If you need website screenshots in an app or automated workflow, choose between Cloudinary’s integrated URL2PNG add-on and a dedicated screenshot API based on what happens after capture, the pages you need to render, and how each provider counts usage. ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it removes cookie banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and starts with a free monthly plan. ScreenshotOne, Urlbox and Screenshot API are also worth evaluating for specific API and workflow needs.
Cloudinary may still be the right choice if you use its image pipeline
Cloudinary’s URL2PNG Website Screenshots add-on turns a public website URL into a screenshot delivered through a dynamic transformation URL. Cloudinary caches and serves the result through its CDN, after which its image pipeline can apply transformations such as crops, borders, rounded corners, shadows and overlays. Its documented capture options include viewport, user agent and delay. See Cloudinary’s URL2PNG documentation.
This integration is most relevant when your team already uses Cloudinary and wants capture, image transformation and CDN delivery within the same system. Setup requires a Cloudinary account and registration for the add-on. Cloudinary says add-on transformation URLs are required by default to be signed or eagerly generated because unrestricted dynamic screenshot requests could create unplanned costs. The account can optionally allow unsigned transformations, so signing is a default control rather than an absolute requirement.

Vendor pricing checked October 3, 2026: 100 screenshots/month free; Basic $17/month for 2,000; Growth $79/month for 10,000; Scale $259/month for 50,000. The vendor says successful requests count, visual issues may still count, and unique uncached screenshots determine usage; cache misses may lead to rerender billing. See documentation and pricing. |
| Urlbox | Workflows that may need screenshots alongside PDFs, videos, or extracted text, HTML and metadata. | Offers render links suitable for image tags as well as synchronous or asynchronous JSON API calls. Documented options include viewport, formats, delays and selectors. Plan limits and capabilities differ, including rate limits, third-party site access, privacy features, timeouts and storage. | Vendor pricing checked October 3, 2026: Lo-Fi $19/month for up to 2,000 renders; Ultra $99/month for up to 15,000; Business $498/month with a base and per-1,000-render charge; custom Enterprise pricing from $3,000/month. The page showed a three-month trial on application at that date. See documentation and pricing. |
| Screenshot API | Simple or batch capture using a documented REST API. | Documentation describes GET and POST single-capture routes and a POST batch route. It lists PNG, JPEG, WebP and PDF output, viewport options and full-page capture; advanced POST options include CSS, JavaScript, selectors, geolocation and PDF. | The provider states its free plan includes 500 screenshots/month and 60 requests/minute, plus caching. Verify current limits before relying on them. See official documentation. |
How to decide which API fits your workflow
Check the pages you actually need to capture
Make a short test set that includes ordinary pages and the difficult cases: a JavaScript-heavy page, a long page with lazy-loaded images, a page whose consent prompt obscures content, and any page that requires authentication or custom headers. Compare full-page versus viewport capture, selectors, delays, custom CSS or JavaScript, and regional rendering only where your workflow requires them. Feature availability can vary by provider and plan.

Match output and delivery to the next step
List the required image formats and dimensions, and whether you need PDF or video as well. Decide whether your application needs a direct render URL, binary image response or JSON response; a synchronous result or asynchronous job; batch capture; webhooks; or storage integration. If screenshots go through downstream cropping, optimization, storage and CDN delivery, include the work Cloudinary already handles in the comparison.
Estimate cost from successful unique captures, not just headline quotas
Estimate monthly successful unique renders, then check each provider’s counting rules, cache behavior, overage terms, rate limits and timeout handling. A cached result, unsuccessful attempt and visual defect may be treated differently between services. For example, ScreenshotOne’s published terms say successful requests count, but visual issues may still count and cache misses may result in rerender billing. Confirm the current contract and plan details with each vendor before committing.

Review operational and security controls
Check API-key handling, signing requirements, privacy and proxy behavior, data retention, rate limits, support and any service-level commitments you need. Avoid treating one vendor as safer or more reliable without evidence for the specific configuration you will use. For authenticated captures, keep secrets out of public URLs and use HTTPS; ScreenshotOne specifically recommends HTTPS because plain HTTP can expose keys, authorization headers, cookies or other sensitive data in transit.

- Choose two or three URLs that represent your hardest pages, plus one typical page. Use pages you are permitted to capture.
- For each candidate, set the same viewport, output format, full-page setting and wait condition wherever the APIs allow it. Record any provider-specific option needed to make the page render correctly.
- Compare whether the output contains the expected content, how dynamic or lazy-loaded elements behave, and whether consent prompts or other overlays obscure the image. Do not infer general reliability from a small test set.
- Measure the workflow cost using the number of successful unique captures you expect, then account for caching, retries, rate limits, plan-specific features and any storage or transformation work.
- Recheck the vendor’s current terms, limits, security settings and pricing before moving the integration into production.

The screenshot shows a consent banner or popup
First check whether the provider has a documented option to remove or dismiss the overlay, and whether that option is included in your plan. If the overlay is an expected part of the page or is not recognized by the service, test a selector-based hide or click option where available; results can vary by site.

The capture is blank or missing content
Check that the page is public or that you have supplied the required authentication, headers or cookies. For content rendered after page load, test a selector wait, delay or network-idle option if the provider supports it. A full-page option may be needed for content below the initial viewport, and lazy-loaded assets may require additional loading behavior.
Usage is higher than expected
Review how the provider counts successful renders, retries, cache hits and cache misses. If caching is available, verify its keying and lifetime behavior against your URL and options; changing capture settings may create a distinct result. Reconcile request logs with the vendor’s usage reporting instead of assuming that every request has the same billing outcome.

Requests fail or credentials may be exposed
Check endpoint, method, rate limits, timeout and required plan features. Use HTTPS and avoid placing credentials in locations exposed to browsers, logs or referrer headers. If the API supports asynchronous jobs, webhooks or signed requests, confirm the expected request and response flow in its current documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Is a dedicated screenshot API always better than Cloudinary?
No. Cloudinary can be a practical fit when you already depend on its transformation and delivery pipeline. A dedicated API may suit workflows that need capture-specific options or outputs, but the right choice depends on your pages, delivery path and usage model.
Can I decide from the listed monthly price alone?
No. Quotas, cache behavior, successful-render rules, feature tiers and rate limits differ. Compare the rules that apply to your expected capture pattern, and verify current vendor terms before purchasing.
