Start with Perfect Dark if you want the closest follow-up to GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo 64. Nintendo describes its basic feel as very similar and says GoldenEye veterans should find its controls natural. If you want a different branch of classic console FPS history, consider Doom 64, Quake, or the later Halo: Combat Evolved—each offers a different reason to move on.
Which game is most like GoldenEye 007?
Perfect Dark: the closest N64 follow-up
Of these choices, Perfect Dark has the clearest connection to GoldenEye 007. Nintendo’s UK Nintendo 64 description says the game’s basic feel is very similar to GoldenEye’s and that players familiar with GoldenEye should find the controls natural. It also calls out a new weapon-selection system, citing Turok 2 as a point of comparison. Nintendo’s Perfect Dark page

The original N64 version has an important hardware requirement: Nintendo says the Expansion Pak is required for solo missions and for multiplayer with three or four players. One- or two-player deathmatch and Challenge Mode can be played without it. Check which modes you want to play before choosing an N64 setup.
What its multiplayer offers
Nintendo describes traditional deathmatch for two to four players, with options to choose weapons, arenas, time and frag limits, and character appearance. That makes Perfect Dark a strong next choice if you want another configurable local multiplayer FPS rather than simply a similar-looking campaign.

| Familiar N64 controls and local deathmatch | Perfect Dark | Nintendo explicitly describes its feel and controls as close to GoldenEye’s. Its multiplayer setup is configurable, but solo missions and three-to-four-player modes on original N64 require an Expansion Pak. Nintendo |
| A different console branch of the Doom series | Doom 64 | Xbox Wire’s Doom history identifies it as a 1997 franchise spin-off. That supports it as a classic console FPS pick, but does not establish that it shares GoldenEye’s mission structure or multiplayer. Xbox Wire’s Doom history |
| The evolution of 3D FPS design | Quake | Xbox Wire describes Quake’s fully 3D polygon environments and vertical maps as a shift in the genre. This is historical context, not evidence that any particular console edition has GoldenEye-like controls or performance. Xbox Wire’s FPS overview |
| A later console FPS direction | Halo: Combat Evolved | Xbox Wire says Halo was revamped as an FPS and became an Xbox launch title. It is a useful next step beyond the narrow N64-era comparison, rather than a direct substitute for GoldenEye. Xbox Wire’s FPS overview |
How GoldenEye’s influence shapes the choice
GoldenEye 007 is remembered for more than its setting. Xbox Wire’s account of the console FPS genre highlights its split-screen multiplayer, differences in damage by body area, and stealth elements. Those features point to different reasons to choose a follow-up: Perfect Dark is the most direct fit for familiar controls and local competitive play; the Doom and Quake branches are useful if you want to explore other directions in the genre; Halo takes the comparison into a later console era. The historical importance of GoldenEye and Quake also received later recognition: the Associated Press reported both as inductees in the World Video Game Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025. That recognition speaks to their place in game history, not to which one will best match your preferences. Associated Press, 2025

What to check before choosing a version
- For original N64 Perfect Dark: confirm whether your intended modes require an Expansion Pak. Solo missions and three-to-four-player modes do; one-to-two-player deathmatch and Challenge Mode do not, according to Nintendo.
- For modern consoles: the sources cited here do not establish current store availability, prices, or compatibility for these games. Check the relevant regional store or platform support information before buying.
- For console editions of Quake: the cited genre history describes the game’s design, not the controls, performance, or feature set of a specific console release.
For context on how GoldenEye was discussed by its creators, former Rare writer David Doak reflected on the appeal of couch multiplayer in a 2019 Nintendo Life interview, describing GoldenEye as a pioneer and an epitome of shared play. That is his personal retrospective view, not a measure of which game is objectively best. Nintendo Life interview, December 2019
