If you want a Chrome alternative that works across Android and desktop, start with Brave for a familiar Chromium-based browser with built-in protections, Firefox for a different browser engine and optional add-ons, or Vivaldi for extensive customization and integrated tools. Opera is another Chromium-based option; Microsoft Edge may suit people already using Microsoft services. The right choice depends on your devices, sync needs, and the trade-offs you care about—not a universal speed or privacy winner.
How to choose a Chrome alternative
Check the browser against the devices you actually use, then compare its engine, default protections, sync, extensions, and interface. Broad platform availability does not mean that every feature is available or identical on Android and desktop.

- Want something familiar? Brave, Vivaldi, Opera, and Edge are Chromium-based, according to the sources cited below. That can make the engine familiar to Chrome users, but does not guarantee identical site or extension behavior.
- Want a different engine? Firefox is the different-engine choice among these options.
- Want sync? Check which data is included and whether setup requires an account or another step.
- Want privacy protections? Distinguish features enabled by default from optional tools, and treat vendor privacy claims as descriptions—not independent comparative test results.

Which browser fits your priorities?
Choose Brave for a familiar feel and built-in protections
Brave is the most direct starting point if you want a Chromium-based browser and protections that Brave says are enabled by default through Shields. Brave also says it supports Chrome Web Store extensions on Android and desktop, and documents encrypted cross-device sync for bookmarks, passwords, tabs, and more. Treat these as the browser maker’s feature descriptions, not an independent privacy or compatibility test.

Choose Firefox for engine diversity and optional add-ons
Firefox is the choice here for readers who want to move away from Chromium. Mozilla describes tracker and fingerprint blocking by default and optional add-ons, including ad-blocking tools. Its comparison page is Mozilla’s own account of Firefox, not an independent head-to-head privacy assessment. Confirm the current extension options and sync details for the specific Firefox version and platform you plan to use.
Choose Vivaldi for customization and built-in tools
Vivaldi foregrounds customization and integrated features, alongside built-in tracker and ad blocking. Its stated sync flow is to sign in with a Vivaldi Account; Vivaldi says it can sync bookmarks, passwords, open tabs, and more between desktop and mobile. Choose it if tailoring the interface and combining tools in one browser matter more to you than keeping the experience minimal.

What to verify before switching
- Check every device. Confirm that the browser supports your Android device and each desktop operating system you use. Platform lists do not establish minimum OS versions.
- Check the features you rely on. Verify extension availability and compatibility, especially if you depend on a specific Chrome extension or Android add-on.
- Check sync before moving data. Find out which items sync, how to enable it, and whether an account or other setup is required. Do not assume feature parity across mobile and desktop.
- Review privacy settings in the browser. Identify which protections are on by default and which require configuration. A vendor’s description does not establish how it compares in independent testing.
- Try your important sites and workflows. An engine family can indicate familiarity, but cannot guarantee that every site, extension, or workflow will behave exactly as it did in Chrome.
Can you pick one for speed or battery life?
There is no supported objective winner for speed or battery life in this comparison. Those rankings require comparable, current tests on the relevant Android and desktop devices; the cited material does not provide them. Choose based on platform fit and features, then judge performance on your own hardware and sites.
