You can install VLC and start using it without deleting your music or videos: the files are separate from Windows Media Player Legacy’s library catalog. Keep the media folders in place, back up the catalog and playlist files you care about, then test VLC against files at their existing locations. Do not assume the WMP database or every playlist feature will transfer automatically.
What “media library” means—and what switching changes
Microsoft describes the Windows Media Player library as a database of information, or metadata, about available digital media. It is not the same thing as the music and video files themselves. Playlists are a third component: files that represent groups of media items. Microsoft’s library documentation explains these roles.

- Media files: Your audio and video files remain in their folders on disk unless you move or delete them. Installing VLC does not require either action.
- WMP catalog: The catalog can contain information associated with your media. The reviewed documentation does not establish that VLC imports the WMP database or automatically carries over ratings, play counts, artwork, organization, or every other WMP field.
- Playlists: These are separate files, and their format affects what another player may be able to use.
For the safest changeover, leave WMP installed and retain its data until you have checked your files, playlists, and any metadata you rely on.

- Identify your media locations. Note where your music and videos are stored. Keep those folders and paths unchanged while installing and testing VLC.
- Back up the WMP data and playlists you care about. Copy saved playlist files and the library database or settings to a separate backup location. Windows versions and configurations differ, and the available documentation does not establish one universal current menu path for backing up or exporting the WMP library.
- Keep the original playlists. In particular, do not overwrite or discard WPL files while testing alternatives.
Install VLC and test media at its current location
- Download VLC from VideoLAN’s official site. Follow its Windows installation instructions to run the installer, choose setup options, and launch the player. Menu labels may vary by VLC release.
- Open a sample file from its existing folder in VLC, or drag files into VLC or its playlist window. Try representative audio and video formats from your collection rather than assuming every WMP entry still points to an available file.
- Open VLC’s playlist view to inspect the items you have added. VideoLAN documents playlist viewing and saving; see its playlist guide and instructions for saving a playlist. Save a new playlist if useful, but retain the WMP originals while you verify the results.
- Check that files play from their existing paths and that the expected playlist entries and order appear. Separately check whether any WMP metadata you need is present in the media files or remains visible only in WMP. Do not treat a successful playback test as proof that catalog information transferred.
WPL playlists need a separate compatibility check
Microsoft identifies WPL as a proprietary playlist format introduced with Windows Media Player 9 Series. Its support page describes WPL as WMP’s default playlist save format and notes that it can create dynamic playlists; ASX and M3U cannot. Microsoft also describes M3U as a metafile playlist that references MP3 files and can include additional metadata. See Microsoft’s playlist-format guidance.

- Simple, Powerful and Fast
- Plays everything, Files, Discs (DVD, CD, VCD, Blu-Ray), Webcams and Streams
- Plays most codecs with no codec packs needed: MPEG-2, H.264, DivX, MPEG-4, WebM, WMV
- Includes a versatile Media Converter and Streamer
- Completely free of adware, DRM, and user tracking so you don't need to worry about your privacy
Do not assume that VLC will import a WPL file correctly or preserve its dynamic rules and other fields. The official VLC pages cited above document playlist viewing and saving, but do not guarantee complete WPL compatibility. Test copies of representative WPL files in the VLC version you install, and compare:
- Whether all expected entries appear.
- Whether the item order is preserved.
- Whether any entries point to missing files.
- Whether a dynamic playlist has become a fixed list rather than continuing to update by rules.
If a dynamic playlist does not behave as expected, keep the WPL original and recreate its rules manually in the system or player you choose. A playlist that displays its current tracks is not necessarily an equivalent replacement for one that updates dynamically.

Set VLC as the default only for the file types you choose
You can verify VLC first and change file associations afterward. VideoLAN documents choosing Windows’ “Always use this app to open <file extension>” option when associating an app with a file type. In Windows, use that choice for the extensions you want VLC to open; repeat it only for those types, rather than changing every association by default. Labels and routes can vary across Windows releases. See VideoLAN’s Windows file-association instructions.

When is it safe to retire the old setup?
Keep the WMP catalog, playlist originals, and backups until you have confirmed that VLC plays the files you use, the paths resolve, and the playlists and metadata you value are accounted for. If preserving WMP-specific ratings, play counts, artwork, or dynamic playlist behavior is essential, verify each separately before relying on VLC as a replacement. The files can remain safe even when some catalog details or playlist behavior do not carry over.
