Best CentOS Replacements for Your Linux VPS

AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are the leading RHEL-compatible CentOS alternatives for VPS users. Compare their lifecycle dates, check software compatibility, and choose between a clean rebuild and a carefully validated migration.

For most VPS users who want a CentOS-like system, start by comparing AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. Both are RHEL-compatible alternatives; Oracle Linux is another enterprise-compatible choice. The right replacement depends on your software’s compatibility requirements, the support dates for the version you plan to run, and whether you can rebuild the VPS or need to attempt an in-place migration. CentOS Stream is a different kind of system—not a drop-in replacement for CentOS Linux.

First, identify which CentOS you are replacing

“CentOS” can mean two different things with different roles and support timelines. CentOS Linux was the downstream rebuild many administrators used as a free, community-supported RHEL-compatible server operating system. CentOS Stream is a continuously delivered distribution that sits ahead of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) in its development process. Choosing a replacement without distinguishing them can lead to the wrong assumptions about updates, compatibility, or how long a release will be supported.

If the VPS runs CentOS Linux 7

CentOS Linux 7 reached end of life in June 2024, according to the CentOS entry on Wikipedia. An end-of-life operating system no longer receives ordinary upstream security maintenance. A VPS can keep running after that point, but continued uptime does not make it a safe or supported platform. Organisations that could not migrate immediately could purchase extended support from commercial vendors; that is a separate service, not a continuation of CentOS Linux’s normal lifecycle.

If your server is still on CentOS 7, treat migration as a priority. Decide whether your applications can be moved to a supported replacement, whether a clean rebuild is practical, and whether an in-place path is necessary. Do not infer CentOS Linux 8’s end-of-life date from the dates for CentOS 7 or CentOS Stream: that date is not established here.

If the VPS runs CentOS Stream

CentOS Stream is not simply a newer version of CentOS Linux. It is a rolling preview of changes on the way to RHEL, so its position in the development cycle differs from that of a downstream rebuild. If you need the traditional CentOS Linux-style target, compare AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux instead of assuming Stream is interchangeable.

The CentOS Project comparison page lists May 31, 2027 as the end date for CentOS Stream 9. The CentOS Stream release table on Wikipedia lists May 31, 2030 for Stream 10. Treat those as release-specific dates, not as a promise that every Stream installation will be supported until the same date. Check the project’s current lifecycle information before scheduling a production migration.

Which replacement should you choose?

AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux are the main options to investigate when the goal is a RHEL-compatible VPS operating system. Oracle Linux is another enterprise-compatible alternative. VzLinux is also listed as a contender, but the available information here does not establish its lifecycle dates or give enough detail for a close comparison. The differences below separate what is established from what still needs validation for your own software stack.

AlmaLinux: a community-governed RHEL-compatible choice

AlmaLinux is described as RHEL-binary-compatible and governed by a community foundation. That makes it a natural candidate when you want a community-oriented distribution with RHEL compatibility as a goal. Compatibility descriptions are not a substitute for checking your own packages, kernel-dependent software, deployment tooling, and vendor support statements.

A comparison published by 1GBits characterizes AlmaLinux as targeting ABI compatibility and Rocky Linux as emphasizing strict bug-for-bug RHEL compatibility. That distinction is not independently established by the project material summarized here, so do not use it as the deciding factor without checking current statements from both projects. For a VPS migration, verified support for your actual workload matters more than a broad compatibility slogan.

Rocky Linux: another primary CentOS replacement candidate

Rocky Linux is RHEL-compatible and has published lifecycle dates for versions 8, 9, and 10. It is a reasonable choice to evaluate when your goal is a supported RHEL-compatible server environment. Before committing, check that the exact release offered by your VPS provider is supported by the applications and control plane you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Rocky Linux conversion script was reported in search results, but its details were not individually verified in the sources summarized here. Do not treat an unverified conversion path as a safe production procedure. Confirm the current tool, supported source and destination releases, prerequisites, and recovery instructions from the Rocky Linux project before using any conversion utility.

Oracle Linux and VzLinux: evaluate beyond the name

Oracle Linux appears among the replacement options, but there is not enough lifecycle information here to compare its supported releases directly with AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux. A conversion script called centos2ol was reported, but it was not individually verified in a cited source. Validate the current official migration instructions rather than assuming that the script supports your CentOS release or VPS configuration.

VzLinux is likewise a listed contender, but the available evidence does not establish version-by-version support dates or provide enough detail to claim that it is a better or worse fit than the leading options. If you are considering it, make lifecycle verification and application certification part of your selection process.

Compare support lifecycles before selecting a version

A distribution name alone is not enough to plan a VPS migration. Choose a major version whose support window suits your maintenance horizon, and distinguish active support from the later security-support or end-of-life date. The figures below are the dates listed in the cited project documentation or tracker as of the research date, October 14, 2026. They can change; verify them with the relevant project before acting.

Distribution and release Active support or active phase ends Security support or end of life Source qualification
AlmaLinux 9 May 31, 2027 May 31, 2032 Dates listed by endoflife.date; verify against current AlmaLinux lifecycle information.
AlmaLinux 10 May 31, 2030 May 31, 2035 Dates listed by endoflife.date; verify against current AlmaLinux lifecycle information.
Rocky Linux 8 Not stated in the cited figures May 31, 2029 End-of-life date listed in Rocky Linux documentation.
Rocky Linux 9 May 31, 2027 May 31, 2032 Active-support and end-of-life dates listed in Rocky Linux documentation.
Rocky Linux 10 May 31, 2030 May 31, 2035 Active-support and end-of-life dates listed in Rocky Linux documentation.

These dates make versions 10 the longer-horizon choices among the AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux releases listed, while versions 9 have earlier active-support milestones. That does not automatically make the newest major release the right one for an existing service: application support, control-panel compatibility, deployment tooling, and the VPS provider’s available images can constrain the choice. A later security-support date also should not be read as a guarantee that every application vendor will support the OS for that entire period.

The cited sources have not always shown identical release-day details for individual minor releases. If a maintenance window depends on an exact release date, use the current project release notes rather than relying on a third-party summary. The lifecycle values above are major-release support dates, not a schedule for every point release.

Choose between a clean rebuild and an in-place migration

A clean rebuild means creating a VPS with the replacement operating system and moving the service onto it. An in-place migration changes the operating system on the existing installation. The choice is operational: it depends on whether you can recreate the environment, how much downtime is acceptable, and whether the migration path explicitly supports your source release and destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prefer a clean rebuild when you can reproduce the service

A fresh installation gives you a chance to validate the replacement OS and application configuration before changing the live system. It also avoids relying on an unverified conversion path. This approach is most practical when you can create another VPS, restore data from backups, and switch traffic only after the replacement has passed checks.

  1. Inventory the current server. Record the CentOS release, installed applications, versions, services, scheduled jobs, network settings, storage layout, and any external integrations. Note which components are vendor-supported on each candidate operating system.
  2. Choose a target release. Compare the lifecycle dates above with the support statements for your applications and tools. Check which replacement images your VPS provider currently offers; provider availability is specific to the provider and is not established by the lifecycle sources.
  3. Make and verify backups. Back up application data and configuration, and make sure you know how to restore them. A backup that has not been tested is not a reliable rollback plan.
  4. Build a separate test environment if possible. Install the target release, restore a copy of the service, and test application behavior, scheduled work, monitoring, backups, and network access before moving production traffic.
  5. Plan the cutover and rollback. Set a maintenance window, identify how you will direct users or traffic to the new VPS, and keep the old environment available until you have confirmed the new one is working. The exact mechanism depends on your network and hosting setup.
  6. Verify after the move. Check that the application responds as expected, data is current, background tasks run, and monitoring and backup jobs report success. Keep the old VPS until the new system has passed the checks that matter to your service.

Consider an in-place upgrade only when the path is supported

AlmaLinux’s ELevate tool is reported to support moving CentOS 7 to AlmaLinux 8 or 9 without reinstalling, according to a Server.HK guide. The evidence for this path is medium-low confidence and comes from vendor content. Treat it as a candidate procedure to validate—not as a guarantee for every CentOS 7 VPS, application, or provider image.

Before using an in-place tool, confirm its current support matrix and instructions, check that your specific system is eligible, and rehearse on a clone or recoverable snapshot. Review application and control-panel support separately: a successful OS conversion does not prove that every service on the server will continue to work. If there is no tested rollback route or the server contains state you cannot safely reproduce, get qualified migration help before changing the production installation.

Check compatibility and operational requirements before you commit

“RHEL-compatible” is useful shorthand, but it does not establish that every application, extension, control panel, or provider integration supports every release. Make a compatibility list for your own VPS and resolve the highest-risk items first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Applications and databases: Check the vendor’s supported operating systems and versions, not just whether the software appears installable.
  • Kernel-dependent components: Identify any drivers, modules, or security products that depend on a particular kernel or distribution release, and confirm their support with the vendor.
  • Control panels: Verify the panel’s current OS support matrix for the exact major version. A report says cPanel no longer supports Rocky Linux from version 134 onward, but that claim was not confirmed by a second source. Do not treat it as settled; check the current cPanel documentation before selecting Rocky Linux for a panel-managed server.
  • Automation and deployment: Review scripts, configuration management, monitoring, and backup tools for assumptions tied to the old OS. Test them on the target system.
  • VPS provider constraints: Confirm image availability, rescue or recovery options, and whether the provider supports the conversion or rebuild approach you intend to use. These details differ by provider.
  • Support ownership: Know who will handle OS and application problems. Community distribution support, commercial extended support, VPS-provider assistance, and application-vendor support are different things.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing CentOS Stream as though it were a drop-in replacement

Stream’s role is ahead of RHEL in the development process, unlike the traditional downstream CentOS Linux model. If your requirement is a RHEL-compatible replacement for an existing server, compare AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux first. Choose Stream only after confirming that its update model fits your operational needs.

Planning around a major-version end date without checking vendor support

An operating system can still receive security maintenance while a particular application vendor has already stopped supporting it. Check both lifecycles. Conversely, a software vendor’s support statement does not extend the operating system project’s lifecycle.

Assuming a conversion script is universally safe

A migration tool’s existence does not establish that it supports your exact starting release, target version, VPS provider, storage configuration, or installed software. Verify the official procedure, test it on a clone, and keep a recovery path. The reported Rocky Linux and Oracle Linux conversion scripts have not been individually verified in the cited material here.

Waiting until the server fails to plan the move

End of life is a support milestone, not a shutdown switch. An old VPS may continue to boot, but that does not resolve unpatched security issues or compatibility risks. A planned migration gives you time to test the replacement and restore data before the old environment becomes an emergency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision path

  1. Still on CentOS Linux 7? Prioritize moving to a supported platform. Consider a clean rebuild if you can reproduce the service; investigate ELevate only after confirming current eligibility and testing recovery.
  2. Want a RHEL-compatible community alternative? Compare AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux against your application and tool support requirements.
  3. Need the longest listed lifecycle? AlmaLinux 10 and Rocky Linux 10 have listed security-support or end-of-life dates of May 31, 2035. Choose between them based on verified compatibility, not the date alone.
  4. Considering Oracle Linux or VzLinux? Confirm current lifecycle and workload support directly because comparable dates and migration details are not established here.
  5. Using a control panel or specialized software? Resolve its exact OS/version support before choosing a distribution or scheduling migration.
