1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor VHS gameplay, match the capture device to the tape’s video standard and use a supported input mode: a practical NTSC starting point is 720×480 at about 29.97 frames per second; PAL uses the corresponding 576-line, 50-field family of modes. Keep the picture’s display shape at 4:3, then choose whether to preserve the interlaced capture or make a smoother progressive copy. The exact options depend on the capture hardware and its driver.
Which capture settings should you start with?
Use the signal coming from the VCR and the modes your capture device actually supports as your guide. For NTSC, an OBS Forums community guide by Thebigcheese (2016) recommends 720×480 at 29.97 fps for retro-console capture. Treat that as an example starting point, not a universal VHS preset. OBS notes that unsupported resolution or frame-rate combinations may produce no picture.

In OBS, add or select the capture device, open its properties, and try the device’s detected resolution and frame rate first. If you choose a custom mode, verify that the device and driver support it. OBS’s official Video Capture Sources documentation describes the properties exposed for capture devices, including resolution, frame rate, video format, color settings, buffering, and audio output. It does not prescribe one VHS-specific color format.

NTSC and PAL are different signal families, so identify which one your tape and playback chain use before choosing a mode. The table gives a workflow-level comparison; it is not a complete list of every mode a particular capture device may offer.

| Source family | Capture starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| NTSC | 720×480 at about 29.97 fps, as recommended in Thebigcheese’s 2016 community guide | Confirm that the VCR’s output and capture device support the selected mode. |
| PAL | A matching 576-line, 50-field-family mode; the cited community guide does not state a specific PAL resolution and frame-rate pair | Use the PAL mode exposed by the capture hardware rather than applying NTSC values. |
OBS’s documentation says the Blackmagic Device mode “should match your media (i.e. camera or game console), output resolution, and frame rate.” That statement applies to that device mode; it is a useful reminder to match source and device, not a VHS-specific prescription.
Should you capture at 720×480 or 640×480?
For NTSC, 720×480 is a capture raster example; 640×480 is a square-pixel display example. Those numbers describe different stages, not necessarily competing capture choices. Thebigcheese’s community guide explains mapping a 720×480 non-square-pixel NTSC signal to 640×480 square-pixel output to preserve the original 4:3 display geometry.

Keep the picture at 4:3 when you frame it in OBS or prepare an output file. Do not stretch the image to fill a 16:9 canvas, and do not crop gameplay just to remove side bars. A 720×480 raster does not by itself mean the displayed image should look widescreen; pixel shape and display aspect ratio both matter.

Should you keep the video interlaced or deinterlace it?
Interlaced video stores alternating fields rather than complete progressive frames. A capture reported at about 29.97 fps for NTSC therefore should not be confused with the motion rate of a deinterlaced output. Thebigcheese’s 2016 guide describes separating fields to produce roughly 60 progressive frames per second. That can preserve smoother gameplay motion when the software and hardware can process it, but it is a community workflow example rather than a guaranteed device result.

Preserve the original for archiving or later editing
If you want flexibility for future processing, keep an untouched capture where practical and make a separate deinterlaced delivery copy. This avoids making one irreversible processing choice your only version.
Deinterlace for a progressive viewing copy
For a file intended for modern progressive displays, test a deinterlacing method that preserves the fields’ temporal order. Choose based on the source, capture software, and available processing power; not every device or workflow offers the same options or can sustain the same output rate.

- Comes with a 3.3ft (1m) USB cable. The longer cord avoids limitations from short cables and offers greater flexibility during operation.
Composite or S-video: which connection should you use?
Use the best connection the VCR can output and the capture device can accept. Composite and S-video are not interchangeable settings: they are different analog connections, and the available choice depends on both ends of the cable. A community retro-console guide uses S-video in its example setup, but that does not establish that every VHS deck or capture card supports it.

Before choosing an analog-to-USB video capture device, check that it accepts the VCR’s connector and the tape’s NTSC or PAL signal. The product category alone does not establish compatibility.

What about color, audio, and buffering?
OBS exposes device-dependent controls for video format, color space, color range, buffering, and audio output. Because OBS does not nominate one universal analog-capture color format, begin with the driver’s default or a mode explicitly supported by the device. Check the resulting picture and sound rather than assuming that a setting available in OBS is valid for every capture card.
How to check a capture before digitizing a full tape
- Identify whether the tape and VCR output are NTSC or PAL, and whether the connection is composite or S-video.
- In OBS, open the capture device’s properties and select a listed or otherwise verified resolution and frame rate.
- Set the displayed image to 4:3 without stretching or unnecessary cropping.
- Record a short sample. Check for the correct shape, combing or other motion artifacts, unexpected color or level changes, audio synchronization problems, and dropped frames.
- If the sample has no picture, return to a mode supported by the device and driver. If motion looks combed, compare an interlaced capture with a deinterlaced copy before committing to a full tape.
For background on device properties, see OBS’s official capture-source documentation. The specific NTSC values and field-separation example above come from Thebigcheese’s older 2016 OBS Forums community guide; verify them against current hardware and software. An OBS community discussion about VHS capture is available at No Audio When Capturing from VHS, but it is practical discussion, not a standards authority.
