For Apple’s ecosystem, the MacBook Neo is a compact everyday option. Prices and configurations vary by market and change frequently, so verify the exact listing before buying.
How to choose an affordable multipurpose laptop
Start with the operating system and apps
Make a list of the programs your work or study requires before comparing prices. RTINGS identifies the HP OmniBook 3 14 as an option for people who need Windows programs unavailable on ChromeOS. A Chromebook can suit web-first work when browser and ChromeOS apps cover your needs; it is not a like-for-like substitute for every Windows application. RTINGS’ budget laptop guide covers these operating-system distinctions.

Screen configurations, not just model names
A laptop model can be sold in several configurations, and review results for one configuration do not automatically apply to another. Check the processor, memory, storage, screen, and ports on the specific listing you intend to buy.

Use memory and storage as basic filters
Which? recommends 8GB of RAM for Windows laptops and advises avoiding Windows models with less than 256GB of storage. For Chromebooks, its buying guide recommends at least 64GB of storage. These are screening recommendations, not guarantees that a particular laptop will handle every workload well. Which?’s laptop buying guide explains its recommendations.

What to know about each pick
MacBook Neo: a compact everyday Mac
RTINGS named the MacBook Neo its budget pick on September 25, 2026, citing its 13-inch display, everyday productivity performance, and workday battery life. Tom’s Guide’s reported US prices are tied to its 2026 coverage; the $599 education price is for eligible buyers, not a universal discount. Check availability and the specification of the actual listing. RTINGS’ current budget picks and Tom’s Guide’s MacBook Neo coverage provide the cited context.
ASUS Vivobook 16: check which processor is in the box
The M1605NAQ-ES51 configuration cited by RTINGS pairs a Ryzen 5 150 with 8GB RAM and a 512GB SSD, making it a candidate for Windows productivity when the listing price fits your budget. There is an important configuration caveat: RTINGS’ tested unit had an older Ryzen 5 7530U. Do not assume performance results from that tested unit describe the Ryzen 5 150 model. Compare the full model code and processor in the retailer listing. RTINGS’ Vivobook 16 M1605 review identifies the tested configuration and recommendation.

The exact processor, RAM, and storage depend on the configuration. Compare those details and the price for your market before deciding. RTINGS’ budget guide names the OmniBook 3 14 as a budget Windows choice.

Dell XPS 13: light, high-resolution, but limited on ports
Tom’s Guide’s July 25, 2026 review reports a 2.2-pound laptop with a 13.4-inch 2560×1600 touchscreen, 8GB RAM, 512GB storage, and two USB-C ports. If you regularly connect several wired devices, those two ports may mean carrying a hub or dongle. The same review notes poor webcam quality, a consideration for frequent video calls. Its listed US starting price and eligible-student price are dated examples, so verify the current offer and eligibility. Tom’s Guide’s XPS 13 (2026) review includes the price and specification details.
Battery-life claims are not directly comparable
Battery life depends on the test method, configuration, brightness, workload, and settings. Tom’s Guide measured 14.5 hours for its tested Dell XPS 13 (2026); treat that as a result from that publication’s test, not a prediction for every buyer. Lenovo’s 2025 general guide gives 6 to 10 hours as a typical range for affordable laptops, but that broad estimate uses a different scope and is not a directly comparable test. Tom’s Guide’s test review and Lenovo’s affordable-laptop guide describe those figures in their respective contexts.

A quick buying checklist
- Confirm that the laptop’s operating system supports the apps you rely on.
- Check the exact model code, processor, RAM, and storage on the sale listing.
- Use 8GB RAM and the storage recommendations from Which? as starting filters, not workload guarantees.
- Match screen size and resolution to how you work: the 13-inch MacBook Neo and XPS 13 prioritize compactness, while the 16-inch Chromebook and Vivobook offer larger displays.
- Count the ports you need. The reviewed XPS 13 has two USB-C ports, which may call for an adapter if you connect multiple wired peripherals.
- Compare the final price in your country, and check conditions for student or education pricing before treating it as available to you.
Which? laptops expert and senior researcher Oliver Trebilcock cautions that “The quality of cheap laptops is always a mixed bag, which is why it’s well worth checking our reviews of cheap laptops before you buy.” Which?’s buying guide offers its broader advice.
