For a themed variation, consider Stratego: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition. Battleship Classic shares hidden deployment and deduction, but plays very differently: players call grid coordinates to strike stationary ships rather than moving ranked units across a battlefield.
What makes a board game like Stratego?
Stratego is not simply a game about keeping information secret. In the classic mode, each player arranges labeled pieces so their identities face them and remain hidden from the opponent. Players alternate turns, moving one piece or attacking. Most pieces move one square horizontally or vertically; Scouts have a special long-range movement privilege. When pieces fight, the lower-ranked piece is removed, equal-ranked pieces are both removed, and a winning attacker takes the defender’s square. The goal is to capture the opponent’s flag. These rules are described in Hasbro’s Stratego: Fire and Ice rules, which also includes a separate special-powers mode.

That combination gives you a practical way to judge alternatives: ask what information is hidden, whether pieces move, how conflict is resolved, and what each player is trying to accomplish. A game can share one feature with Stratego without recreating its overall experience.
Games like Stratego, ranked by resemblance
| Game | What it shares with Stratego | What differs | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stratego (including documented themed editions) | Hidden army placement, tactical movement and attacks, and a flag-capture objective. | Rules and player counts can vary by edition; check the instructions for the specific set. | The closest match for the full combination of mechanics. |
| Stratego: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition | Secret army placement and flag capture, with three gameplay variations documented by Hasbro. | It is a themed Stratego edition, not a separate game system, and its edition-specific presentation may not suit players who want a classic set. | A close variation for players who want the Stratego framework with a different theme. |
| Battleship Classic | Concealed deployment and deduction: players position ships and infer where the opponent’s are from strikes and hit-or-miss results. | Players announce grid coordinates to target ships. There are no ranked mobile units, traps, or flag-capture goal. | A looser alternative for players who enjoy hidden information and deduction more than battlefield movement. |
Which game should you choose?
Choose Stratego for the original tactical mix
If the appeal is learning what an opponent’s pieces might be while deciding when to move, attack, or protect the flag, choose Stratego. Hasbro’s product page describes the game as using memory, cunning, and luck to capture the enemy’s flag. Its listed product, Stratego 04714, is described for 2 to 4 players, but that count should not be applied to other editions without checking their instructions: Hasbro’s Stratego product page.

Choose the Lord of the Rings edition for a themed variant
Hasbro’s page for Stratego The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Edition describes secret placement of armies, strongholds, and a flag, and documents three gameplay variations for two players. It is the most direct alternative here because it retains the Stratego identity rather than only borrowing the idea of hidden information: Hasbro’s edition page.
Choose Battleship for deduction without mobile combat
Battleship Classic is a fit if you like concealed deployments and trying to infer an opponent’s layout, but do not need pieces that maneuver or defeat one another by rank. Hasbro describes it as a two-player game for ages 7 and up, and lists a Salvo option for advanced play. Those details apply to the F4527 product page, not necessarily every Battleship edition: Hasbro’s Battleship Classic page.

Stratego rules that affect the comparison
The cited Fire and Ice rulebook contains both a classic game and a special-powers game. Its classic rules are the basis for the comparison above; special powers should not be assumed to apply to every Stratego edition. The same rulebook offers setup suggestions: protect a back-row flag with traps, consider decoy trap placements, preserve Scouts for later, and avoid sending powerful pieces into unknown territory where traps may capture them. These are Hasbro’s suggestions in that rulebook, not a guaranteed winning setup.
