Match the bitrate to the resolution and frame rate you send to YouTube, then use the column for your ingest codec. YouTube’s published live-stream table gives both minimum and recommended bitrates; the recommended values below are targets, not guarantees of a stable stream. This is YouTube’s guidance checked on October 3, 2026; the help page does not show a publication or revision date.
YouTube Live bitrate by resolution, frame rate, and codec
Use the row for the video resolution and frame rate your encoder sends to YouTube—not a lower-resolution playback option YouTube may create afterward. Values are in Mbps and shown as minimum / recommended. YouTube groups AV1 and H.265 (HEVC) together in this table; it does not provide a separate H.265 column.

| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 minimum / recommended | H.264 minimum / recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 10 / 35 Mbps | 14 / 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 8 / 30 Mbps | 11 / 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 6 / 24 Mbps | 8 / 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 5 / 15 Mbps | 7 / 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 4 / 12 Mbps | 6 / 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 4 / 10 Mbps | 5 / 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 2 / 6 Mbps | 3 / 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 2 / 6 Mbps | 3 / 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 0.3 / 3 Mbps | 0.4 / 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 0.3 / 3 Mbps | 0.4 / 4 Mbps |
For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream has a 14 Mbps recommended bitrate, while AV1/H.265 has 10 Mbps. At 1080p60, the recommended values are 17 Mbps for H.264 and 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. For 4K60, they are 50 Mbps and 35 Mbps respectively. The corresponding minimums are listed in the table; do not treat a minimum as the recommended target.

Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain
A bitrate that fits YouTube’s table can still fail if your upload connection cannot sustain it. YouTube says the stream’s total bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom over the streaming bitrate. Upload capacity—not download speed—is the relevant measurement, and other people using the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Measure your connection’s upload speed at a time and location representative of the live event.
- Compare the result with the total stream bitrate, including audio. Leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends; if the connection is shared or variable, choose a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than relying on a best-case speed test.
- Run an unlisted test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
For computer-based streaming, YouTube recommends Ethernet. It is a connection option, not a requirement to buy a particular cable type. YouTube also recommends testing audio, video, and equipment in an unlisted live stream. See YouTube’s filming tips for live streams.

Encoder settings that matter
YouTube’s encoder guide covers RTMP/RTMPS streams. Its recommendations and support notes include:
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. Use the matching bitrate-table column above.
- Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS, AAC is the supported option.
- Picture and encoding options: square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, use Rec. 709; YouTube lists 8-bit SDR and 10-bit HDR.
HDR and 4K latency notes
YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Its documented 4K/2160 streaming settings do not include the “improve for low latency” option: 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. Consult the official encoder guide if your encoder or YouTube’s available controls differ.

Troubleshoot bitrate and stream-health problems
- Stream health is poor or the stream buffers: the upload connection may be unable to sustain the total bitrate, or competing devices may be using bandwidth. Measure upload speed, preserve headroom, reduce the bitrate or output resolution, and test again.
- The encoder reports dropped frames: check whether upload capacity is stable and whether the connection is shared. If possible, use Ethernet for a computer stream; test the revised setup in an unlisted broadcast.
- The image looks poor despite a stable stream: confirm the encoder’s output resolution and frame rate, then verify you selected the matching codec and recommended bitrate. A 1080p60 stream should not use the 1080p30 row.
- The stream does not match the settings table: compare the resolution, frame rate, and codec actually sent by the encoder, not just the values selected in a preset. YouTube’s table describes the incoming live stream.
Use YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test and event; a speed test is only a snapshot of available upload capacity.
