Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose StreamYard for browser-based interviews where separate 4K files for each participant are the priority; choose OBS for desktop recording when you want direct control over sources, encoders, and output settings. The distinction matters: StreamYard’s 4K feature is for local recordings, not 4K live broadcasts. Its live-stream maximum and cloud-mixed recording resolution are up to 1080p. OBS offers configurable recording output, but smooth 4K capture depends on the computer, encoder, frame rate, and scene complexity—not merely on OBS being compatible with the system.
What “4K recording” means in StreamYard and OBS
A 4K recording is a local file captured at 2160p. It is not the same thing as sending a 4K live broadcast. StreamYard’s documentation distinguishes the two: its live streams currently top out at 1080p, while eligible users can download 4K local participant recordings. Its cloud-mixed recording also remains at the stream resolution, up to 1080p. StreamYard’s 4K recording guidance explains the distinction.
OBS is desktop software. It lets you configure recording quality, format, encoder, and output scaling, including recording at a different resolution from the canvas. Those controls do not guarantee that a particular computer can record 4K reliably; OBS says performance varies with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity.
StreamYard vs OBS at a glance
| Need | StreamYard | OBS |
|---|---|---|
| 4K live broadcast | No. StreamYard’s documented live maximum is 1080p. | Output is configurable, but whether 4K live streaming works depends on the platform, settings, and hardware. No platform-specific 4K live-stream guarantee is established here. |
| 4K local recording | 4K local participant files are available on eligible plans with local recording enabled and a 4K-capable camera and device. Cloud-mixed export remains up to 1080p. | Recording output can be configured or rescaled. Practical performance depends on the hardware and settings. |
| Multi-person browser interview | Browser-based studio workflow with separate local participant tracks; plan, device, and local-recording requirements apply. | Desktop scenes and sources are configurable. A remote-guest workflow requires additional setup beyond OBS’s recording controls. |
| Output control | Studio resolution and plan-based feature access. | Direct controls for recording format, encoder, quality, audio tracks, and output rescaling. |
| Typical fit | Guest sessions where separate participant files are useful and a browser workflow is preferred. | Desktop capture or custom scenes where control of the recording setup matters. |
This is a comparison of documented capabilities, not a head-to-head performance test or measured ease-of-use ranking.

When StreamYard is the better fit
StreamYard is the more direct option when you are recording browser-based interviews or guest sessions and want an individual local file for each participant. Each person’s track is captured on that participant’s device, which helps keep local-file capture quality from being tied to the internet connection. The main camera feed’s studio resolution determines the track resolution.
Check the plan and equipment first
- StreamYard’s 4K help article names Advanced, Teams, and Business as eligible plans. Its current pricing page lists 4K (2160p) local recordings under Advanced. Plan details can change, so confirm the eligibility shown for your account before a session.
- Enable local recording in the studio, and use a camera or webcam and device that support 4K. A 4K-capable webcam is a prerequisite, not a guarantee that the entire workflow is configured for 4K.
- Local participant audio and video are recorded in browser storage and uploaded afterward. StreamYard recommends having 5 GB of available device storage for most users; this is an operational recommendation, not a promised file size.
- Avoid private or incognito browser windows: temporary recording data may not persist after the window closes.
- The current pricing page lists two hours per month of local recording on the Free plan. That is a plan allowance, not a statement that the Free plan includes 4K downloads.
For an interview, enable local recording before the session, confirm participants have suitable cameras and device storage, and allow the local files to upload after recording. StreamYard’s local-recording help article gives the workflow and explains the storage considerations: Local Recording in StreamYard. Its current plan information is on the StreamYard pricing page.

When OBS is the better fit
OBS is a better fit when you need to record desktop sources, construct custom scenes, or control the output format and encoder directly. Its recording options are not presented as a plan-gated 4K tier, but the work shifts to your own machine: you choose settings and must verify that the computer can sustain them.
Set up a recording in OBS
- Open Settings > Output. Select the recording path, format, quality, and encoder. In Advanced output mode, OBS exposes additional options such as audio-track selection and output rescaling.
- Choose the recording resolution deliberately. You can rescale recording output relative to the canvas, while maintaining aspect ratio; recording at a higher resolution or with a separate quality setting can use more computer resources than “Same as stream.”
- Choose a recording format with recovery in mind. The OBS Project’s Standard Recording Output Guide recommends MKV because an unexpected stop will not corrupt the entire file. OBS can remux a completed recording to MP4 using its built-in remux tool.
- Make a test recording using the intended resolution, frame rate, encoder, audio tracks, and a representative scene. Check playback, audio sync, dropped frames or stutters, and whether the result meets your editing needs before recording an important session.
- If you use different output configurations, save them as separate profiles. OBS documents profiles as a way to organize settings—for example, separate 1080p and 4K output profiles. A profile does not reduce the work required of the hardware.
OBS’s system requirements guidance cautions that meeting system requirements does not guarantee recording or streaming capability for every chosen workload. Encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity all matter, so there is no universal 4K frame-rate or hardware promise to rely on.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Choose based on the recording you need
- Choose StreamYard for browser-based guest sessions when separate local participant tracks and a less hands-on recording setup matter more than control of encoder settings. Confirm plan eligibility, local recording, and participant equipment in advance.
- Choose OBS for desktop capture, bespoke scenes, or direct control over recording settings. Test your target workload on the actual computer before depending on it.
- Do not choose either on the assumption that 4K recording means 4K live streaming. StreamYard’s documented live maximum is 1080p. OBS output is configurable, but the live platform, settings, and hardware determine what is achievable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream—not to record an interview—StreamNeo is a separate option. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
- Any quality you upload, up to 4K 60fps, streams as made at one flat price per slot.
- If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers.
- The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and is not a substitute for StreamYard or OBS when you need to record participant tracks or a desktop session. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
