Why CLO is the best starting point for patterns
It supports pattern creation, not only garment visualization
CLO’s Help Center says patterns can be created from scratch and links to tutorials for a basic block, a bodice and sleeve, and a pattern-to-production workflow. Its Pattern Drafter documentation, updated September 24, 2026, describes drafting with measurement points or flat sketches, matching patterns to CLO avatars, making parametric edits and grading sizes. The avatar-matching feature described is limited to CLO avatars.
There is a free place to begin
CLO’s Help Center lists a free four-part Beginner’s Guide based on version 5.0, along with paid introductory Academy courses for basic apparel and handbag design. The Academy courses are described as English-only. Because the free guide was made for CLO 5.0, some interface details may differ in newer versions; use it to learn the workflow and check current menus as needed.

CLO also says CONNECT offers over 700 free patterns for female and male versions. Starting from a pattern may help with customization, but the quantity alone does not establish that any particular pattern is complete, correctly fitted or appropriate for your project.

When Marvelous Designer is the better choice
If you are clothing a character for a game, animation or VFX project, Marvelous Designer may be the more relevant starting point. Its official catalog includes a Beginner Stream, a pattern-making quick start and basic garment tutorials. Learn the tool using its Quick Start and pattern-making lessons, then check the exported asset in the destination software.

A garment that looks convincing in a 3D preview is not automatically a production-ready sewing pattern. You still need to understand garment construction, ease, seams, fabric behavior and fit. Before cutting fabric or sending files to manufacturing, check the pattern’s measurements and construction and validate fit for the intended garment.

Software instruction and patternmaking education are related but separate. CLO can help you draft and edit patterns, but using those features does not establish that you understand why a pattern needs a particular shape, allowance or adjustment. Learn the garment-making concepts alongside the software, and test your work against the intended measurements and fabric.

A practical beginner learning path
- For apparel and sewing patterns, start with CLO’s free Beginner’s Guide. Keep in mind that it was made for version 5.0, so current interface labels may differ.
- Make a simple garment using CLO’s pattern-from-scratch tutorials. Work through a basic block or a bodice and sleeve rather than starting with a complex design.
- Use the Pattern Drafter documentation as you work. Practice with measurement points or a flat sketch, then learn avatar matching, parametric edits and grading.
- Study patternmaking and garment construction in parallel. Pay attention to ease, seams, fabric behavior and fit rather than treating a successful simulation as proof that the garment is ready to sew.
- For character clothing, follow Marvelous Designer’s Quick Start and pattern-making lessons instead. Validate any exported asset in the software where it will be used.
