For a managed interactive live experience, evaluate Amazon IVS; for a configurable broadcast pipeline, consider AWS Elemental MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront; and for API-led managed streaming, compare Cloudflare Stream with Mux. These services solve different problems, so the right replacement depends on whether you need real-time interaction, DRM, control over the delivery pipeline, or a simpler managed workflow. Microsoft Azure Media Services (AMS) retired on June 30, 2024, so migration planning should also cover existing assets, URLs, metadata, and players—not just live ingest.
What to know before choosing an Azure Media Services replacement
Azure Media Services retired on June 30, 2024. In its retirement guide, last updated June 18, 2024, Microsoft said that after retirement AMS would stop streaming on all accounts and accounts would become read-only for approximately 90 days before automatic deletion. That period has passed. Microsoft also warned that video files remain in Azure Storage while account metadata, endpoints, live events, and asset metadata were subject to deletion after the read-only period.

Treat this as two related but distinct projects: replacing a live streaming workflow, and preserving or migrating the existing media catalog. A service that can ingest and deliver a new live stream does not automatically migrate old assets, playback URLs, metadata, or player integrations.
Compare the alternatives by workload
| Option | Best fit | What it provides | Important trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon IVS | Interactive live video built into your own application or website | Managed live video, player and broadcast SDKs, chat, and timed metadata that can synchronize items such as polls or leaderboards with a stream. | AWS says usual low-latency viewer delivery is under five seconds and can be under three seconds; its real-time streaming can be under 300 milliseconds from host to viewer. These are AWS service descriptions, not independent benchmarks or guarantees. IVS does not support stream encryption or DRM. |
| AWS Elemental MediaLive + MediaPackage + CloudFront | Teams that need control over a broadcast or OTT pipeline | MediaLive encodes, MediaPackage packages, and CloudFront delivers. AWS documents CMAF, HLS, and DASH outputs; two input feeds for redundancy; MediaConnect input support; and integration with FairPlay, Widevine, and PlayReady using AES-128 encryption. | This is a set of components to architect and operate, not a turnkey equivalent to IVS. AWS’s example estimate is $69.74 per month for its example solution in US East (N. Virginia), not a general quote or typical cost for an arbitrary workload. |
| Cloudflare Stream | A managed live workflow from ingest through playback | Creates a live input and stream key, accepts RTMPS or SRT, encodes multiple resolutions, and supports Cloudflare’s player or HLS/DASH-capable players. Its documentation describes adaptive bitrate behavior. | Costs have distinct stored-video capacity and delivered-video dimensions. Live recordings consume stored-video minutes; live streams with no viewers incur no delivered minutes, according to Cloudflare’s pricing documentation. |
| Mux | Application teams building live video through an API | Create a live stream resource, broadcast over RTMP, and play using an HLS URL. Mux provides a stream key and playback ID. | Billing separates input, storage, and delivery. Mux says live streams require plus or premium quality levels, supports live up to 1080p, and includes 100,000 free delivery minutes each month. Check current terms and prices before estimating spend. |
| Bitmovin | Teams needing encoding, packaging, ad insertion, DRM, or deployment flexibility | Its product documentation describes RTMP, SRT, or Zixi inputs; HLS/DASH outputs; single or redundant inputs; live-to-VOD; multi-codec and multi-DRM features; SCTE-35 and ad insertion; and managed SaaS or customer-cloud deployment. | Bitmovin’s own migration guide says its tool can serve an existing back catalog from existing Azure Storage without re-encoding; treat this as the vendor’s claim and confirm current migration support and terms directly. |
| MediaKind or Ravnur | Organizations evaluating Microsoft-listed migration partners, including specific regional or government needs | Microsoft’s retirement guide says MediaKind can continue HLS/DASH streaming with AES and DRM support subject to regional availability. It says Ravnur can be hosted in a customer’s Azure subscription and continue HLS/DASH streaming; Microsoft identifies Ravnur for Azure Government. | The available published migration information does not establish a like-for-like comparison of their current live ingest, API, latency, or pricing against IVS, Cloudflare Stream, or Mux. Confirm current capabilities and regional coverage with each vendor. |
Which option fits your live-streaming use case?
Choose Amazon IVS for interaction inside your own product
IVS is designed for developers who want to build the viewer-facing experience themselves while relying on a managed video service. Its chat, SDKs, and timed metadata suit experiences where viewers interact with hosts or synchronized application elements. AWS distinguishes IVS from Twitch: IVS is infrastructure for a customer’s own experience, while Twitch is a hosted audience and content platform.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Latency depends on factors including viewer location, ISP, and encoder settings, as AWS notes. If a sub-second interaction loop is essential, assess the real-time mode and test it with your actual network, encoder, and audience geography rather than treating a published service description as an outcome guarantee. If your content requires DRM or stream encryption, IVS’s stated lack of those capabilities rules it out for that requirement.
Choose the AWS Elemental pipeline when control matters more than simplicity
MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront give architects separate control over encoding, packaging, and delivery. That can suit teams that need to specify redundancy, output formats, or DRM integration and have the AWS skills to configure and operate the components. The added control also means more design and operational work than choosing a narrowly managed interactive service.

Choose Cloudflare Stream for an integrated managed workflow
Cloudflare’s documented flow centers on creating a live input, obtaining its stream key, sending video through RTMPS or SRT, and delivering playback through its player or an HLS/DASH-compatible player. Cloudflare says it handles ingest through delivery and encodes multiple resolutions. This can reduce the need to operate separate encoding and delivery infrastructure, though you should confirm player, access-control, recording, and regional needs against current documentation before committing.

Cloudflare’s pricing documentation, last updated September 8, 2026, lists stored-video capacity at $5 per month per 1,000 minutes and delivered video at $1 per 1,000 minutes. It says ingress and encoding are free and bandwidth is included in delivered minutes. Live recordings use stored-video minutes, while a live stream without viewers does not incur delivered minutes. These are vendor-published figures as of that date; verify the current pricing page before purchase.
Choose Mux for an API-led application workflow
Mux’s documented developer flow creates a live stream, broadcasts to it over RTMP, then plays the resulting video through an HLS URL. The stream key is secret: Mux warns that anyone who has it can broadcast to that stream. Store it as a credential, restrict access to it, and rotate it if it is exposed.

Pricing and product limits can change; verify the current terms for your intended quality and usage.
Evaluate Bitmovin, MediaKind, and Ravnur for migration-specific requirements
Bitmovin is a candidate when encoding and packaging features, deployment choice, or migration tooling are central. Microsoft also lists Bitmovin as a partner. However, Microsoft’s guide described automatic preservation of non-DRM streaming URLs only through June 30, 2025; that date has passed, so do not assume the URL-preservation offer remains available. Verify current migration options and regional coverage directly.

Microsoft names MediaKind and Ravnur as migration partners. It says MediaKind and Bitmovin serve public-cloud customers, and Ravnur specializes in government customers and is available in Azure Commercial and Azure Government regions. Partner solutions may cover fewer regions than AMS did. Check each provider’s current region list and confirm that the required ingest, packaging, playback, and compliance features are available where your viewers and workloads operate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to plan a safe AMS migration
- Inventory live workflows and the existing catalog separately. Record each live input, output format, playback URL, player integration, DRM or encryption requirement, region, and dependency on AMS endpoints or metadata. List stored video files separately from account metadata and live-event configuration.
- Choose the replacement by the actual workload. Decide whether you need interactive or real-time video, a configurable AWS pipeline, managed ingest-to-delivery, an API-first product, or a partner route tied to migration or government requirements. Validate protocols, formats, DRM, redundancy, resolution, regions, and operating responsibilities before moving traffic.
- Map asset delivery and player changes. Microsoft’s static migration tool can serve existing assets from selected storage using HLS/DASH, but it requires customer-provisioned compute and CDN planning. It also requires URL changes and a player update if the retired Azure Media Player was in use. It is an asset-serving route, not a hosted end-to-end live service.
- Rebuild and validate the live path. Configure the chosen provider’s ingest, encoding, packaging, delivery, and player or application integration. Test stream start and stop, playback across intended devices and regions, failover where required, and any encryption or access-control behavior before changing production URLs.
- Switch consumers and preserve what remains. Update applications, players, and downstream systems to use the new URLs and metadata model. Keep an inventory of Azure Storage files and confirm which metadata or endpoints are still needed; Microsoft’s retirement notice distinguishes retained video files from account information subject to deletion.
- Estimate cost using each vendor’s billing dimensions. Model input hours, participant duration, storage, viewer delivery, redundancy, and recording as applicable. Recheck the provider’s current rates and regions at decision time; cost dimensions differ enough that a simple per-minute or per-stream comparison can mislead.
How to compare candidates before committing
- Latency and interaction: distinguish one-way low-latency delivery from real-time host-to-viewer communication, and test the end-to-end experience under representative network conditions.
- Ingest and compatibility: confirm the protocols your encoder or contribution workflow can send, such as RTMP, RTMPS, SRT, or Zixi where documented, and check whether the service accepts your existing setup.
- Outputs and playback: match required HLS, DASH, or CMAF outputs, adaptive-bitrate behavior, player support, and resolution limits to the application and devices you support.
- Rights and security: verify DRM, encryption, access control, and stream-key handling. A service’s lack of DRM can be decisive for premium content.
- Resilience and archive: check redundant inputs, recording, and live-to-VOD if the workflow requires them. Do not infer these capabilities from a general claim of managed streaming.
- Regions and regulation: validate service availability in the exact regions and cloud environments you need, particularly for government workloads.
- Migration scope: plan for old assets, URLs, metadata, and player dependencies independently from the new live pipeline.
- Operational ownership: establish who will monitor, configure, and troubleshoot encoders, cloud components, APIs, players, and delivery behavior.
- Total cost: estimate the actual input, storage, participant, and viewer-delivery quantities for your workload using the provider’s own billing model.
A separate case: always-on prerecorded YouTube streams
If your requirement is specifically to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock by looping videos you upload—not to ingest a live camera, build a general-purpose OTT service, or replace AMS’s catalog and media pipeline—StreamNeo is a narrower-purpose option. It keeps that YouTube stream running from the cloud, plays uploaded videos, and is not a substitute for the AMS alternatives above. It does not stream to other platforms.
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer does not need to remain on; each slot includes looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots. Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
The first day is free with no card, with one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For this specific YouTube looping use case, see StreamNeo or start the free day.
