Best Audio Settings for Looping Guided Meditations on YouTube Live

For stereo guided meditation on YouTube Live, use AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for RTMP/RTMPS. These are live encoder settings, not source-file requirements.

For a standard stereo guided meditation sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, set the encoder’s live audio to AAC, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps. YouTube also supports MP3 for this ingestion path, but its published stereo settings give the clearest default. These are settings for the outgoing live stream—not requirements for the format of your original meditation recording.

Recommended settings for a stereo meditation stream

Setting Recommended value What it applies to
Audio codec AAC The audio encoded into the live stream sent to YouTube
Sample rate 44.1 kHz Stereo audio
Audio bitrate 128 kbps Stereo audio
Ingestion protocol RTMPS preferred; RTMP is also covered by YouTube’s settings The encoder-to-YouTube connection

YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data on its way to and through Google’s servers. Its published encoder recommendations list AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS, and specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the reference for this configuration.

Why these settings concern the live encoder, not your source file

The audio codec, sample rate, and bitrate above describe what your encoder sends to YouTube. They do not tell you how to record or store the original meditation, and they do not require the source file to be AAC or MP3. YouTube’s live-encoding guidance does not prescribe an editing-master format or a particular method for making a loop seamless.

After YouTube receives the live stream, it transcodes it into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. You choose and verify a supported, stable input; you do not need to select a separate playback audio format for each audience device. YouTube Help describes this transcoding process.

When to use MP3 or 5.1 audio instead

MP3 for a stereo stream

MP3 is an accepted codec for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. If your encoder or existing workflow uses MP3, YouTube lists it as supported; its guidance does not establish that MP3 and AAC are equally preferable in every encoder. For a new, conventional stereo meditation setup, AAC is the straightforward choice.

5.1 surround only when the production calls for it

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance says 5.1 surround supports AAC only and recommends 48 kHz and 384 kbps. A typical spoken guided meditation or stereo ambience bed has no evident need for 5.1, so use those settings only when you have a real surround-production requirement.

Set up and verify the outgoing audio

  1. Choose the RTMP/RTMPS path. In your encoder’s YouTube streaming configuration, use RTMPS where available. The exact menu names depend on the encoder; YouTube’s cited recommendations apply to RTMP/RTMPS.
  2. Set the live audio output. Select AAC, stereo, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and 128 kbps audio bitrate. Confirm these are the live output settings, not just export settings for the source recording.
  3. Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream, using audio and movement similar to the intended stream. Listen for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly quiet audio and confirm the loop behaves as intended.
  4. Check stream health while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Its Live Streaming API documentation identifies configuration problems such as unsupported codecs and sample-rate inconsistencies, which can help explain why an otherwise prepared stream is not healthy. YouTube Live Streaming API health-status documentation covers those configuration issues.
