Best Audio Format and Sample Rate for Streaming Internet Radio on YouTube

Use AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo internet radio streamed to YouTube Live over RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube’s 5.1 recommendations differ.

For a stereo internet-radio broadcast sent to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS, use AAC audio at 44.1 kHz, with a recommended audio bitrate of 128 kbps. YouTube also lists MP3 as a supported stereo live codec, but AAC is the straightforward default. For a genuine 5.1-channel broadcast, YouTube’s guidance changes to AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.

Recommended YouTube Live audio settings for internet radio

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends these settings for RTMP/RTMPS ingest:

Broadcast format Audio codec Sample rate Recommended audio bitrate
Stereo (two channels) AAC or MP3 44.1 kHz 128 kbps
5.1 surround AAC only 48 kHz 384 kbps

For ordinary internet radio, select the stereo row. Choose the 5.1 row only if your program is actually mixed and delivered as multichannel surround audio. YouTube states that 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe these as recommended settings, not a guarantee of a particular listening result.

What “format” and “sample rate” mean

Codec: AAC or MP3

AAC and MP3 are audio codecs: they describe how audio is encoded for delivery. YouTube lists both for stereo live audio over RTMP/RTMPS. AAC is a practical default because YouTube also specifies it for 5.1 live audio; that does not mean the cited guidance claims AAC sounds better than MP3.

Sample rate: 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz

The sample rate is the number of audio samples represented per second. It is a separate encoder setting from the codec and bitrate. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS live audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz; its 5.1 live recommendation is 48 kHz. Set the sample rate explicitly in your encoder rather than assuming that choosing AAC or MP3 sets it correctly.

Bitrate: 128 kbps for stereo live audio

Audio bitrate controls the encoded audio data rate. YouTube recommends 128 kbps for stereo live audio and 384 kbps for 5.1. These figures are for the live-ingest configurations above; raising them beyond the recommendation is not shown by YouTube’s cited guidance to improve what listeners hear.

Why the upload setting is not the live setting

A prerecorded file upload and a live RTMP/RTMPS broadcast are different workflows. YouTube’s separate upload guidance recommends a 48 kHz sample rate and lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio as audio codecs. It recommends 384 kbps for stereo audio uploads. Those upload recommendations should not be substituted for the live stereo settings: 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. YouTube’s upload encoding page addresses uploaded files, while its encoder page addresses live settings. The upload page describes its bitrate figures as recommendations, not a required playback bitrate.

Set up and verify the live audio

  1. Choose the correct channel layout. Use stereo for a normal two-channel internet-radio program. Select 5.1 only when the source audio is genuinely mixed for surround and the rest of your chain preserves that layout.
  2. Set the codec, sample rate, and bitrate in your encoder. For stereo RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, or MP3 at the same sample rate and recommended bitrate. For 5.1 RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
  3. Keep the configured stream’s audio sample rate consistent. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation flags consistent audio sample rates as a stream configuration consideration. If you configure multiple streams for use in the same setup, avoid mismatched sample rates. See YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams.
  4. Run a representative test before broadcasting. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended program. Check that the encoder is sending the expected codec, channel layout, sample rate, and bitrate, and listen for clipping, silence, distortion, or interruptions.
  5. Watch stream health while live. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event and address any audio configuration warning. YouTube also recommends testing your upload bitrate with a speed test; a stable connection is part of getting the encoded stream to YouTube reliably.

Common audio-setting problems and fixes

  • Audio is flagged as an unsupported codec: Check the live encoder’s audio codec setting against YouTube’s supported choices for the selected RTMP/RTMPS channel layout. For 5.1, use AAC, not MP3.
  • The stream uses the wrong sample rate: Set the encoder to 44.1 kHz for stereo live audio or 48 kHz for 5.1, then confirm the source and configured stream are not introducing inconsistent rates.
  • YouTube flags the audio bitrate: Check the encoder’s audio bitrate separately from video bitrate. The live recommendations are 128 kbps stereo or 384 kbps 5.1.
  • Audio drops out or sounds distorted: Test the complete path with representative programming before going live. Check for source or encoder clipping, interruptions in the input, and stream-health warnings; the recommended codec settings cannot correct a faulty source or unstable connection.
  • You applied 48 kHz because the program was uploaded: Confirm whether you are uploading a file or sending a live RTMP/RTMPS stream. The upload recommendation is not the stereo live recommendation.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your internet-radio programming is prerecorded and you want a YouTube channel to keep streaming it, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
