Choose M.U.L.E. if you have other players available. Time Extension describes it as a real-time strategy game and says up to four people can play. Its appeal is the combination of planning and competition, rather than simply taking turns at an arcade challenge.

For flight and space combat
Rescue on Fractalus! is a strong choice for an atmospheric rescue mission; Star Raiders II emphasizes combat and mission objectives. Both offer a different pace from scrolling shooters such as River Raid.
For platforming or exploration

What the ratings can—and cannot—tell you
Atarimania’s catalog visitor ratings, accessed October 9, 2026, offer one signal about which games its users rate highly. On that site, M.U.L.E. had a 9.05/10 rating from 2,947 votes, Rescue on Fractalus! 8.91/10 from 13,971 votes, and The Seven Cities of Gold 8.82/10 from 1,640 votes. These are self-selected site visitor ratings, not critic scores or representative surveys.

Atarimania listed Boulder Dash at 8.6/10 from 4,706 votes when accessed in 2026. Ratings and vote totals can change; use them to find candidates, not to settle which game is best for you.

Will these games run on an 800XL?
Many games made for Atari’s 8-bit computers are reasonable candidates, but compatibility is not universal. Some software written for the earlier 400/800 operating system can fail on XL/XE computers because it depends on memory or operating-system behavior that changed. Atarimania notes that some affected games can work with the Atari Translator or with a later fixed release.
Before loading a game, check its exact release or revision and look for an XL/XE-compatible version. A title’s broad label as an “Atari 8-bit” game does not guarantee that every disk, cassette or cartridge release will run unmodified on an 800XL.

Using Atari’s newer 800XL recreation
Atari’s newer product named THE 800XL is a recreation, not a vintage 800XL. Its official product page, checked October 9, 2026, listed 25 built-in games, including The Seven Cities of Gold, Lee, Miner 2049er and Star Raiders II. The page also described a working cartridge slot that supports “most” Atari 400, 800, XL and XE cartridges, plus loading cartridge, disk and cassette images from USB storage. “Most” does not mean every title, and those product claims should not be taken as a guarantee of compatibility on an original computer.
