The cited iTechGuides listing gives Shockbyte’s Minibus plan as 6GB for 12 players at $17.99. It also lists automatic updates, backups and a 72-hour refund. That combination is useful when you want a concrete small-group limit and a defined cooling-off period rather than an unspecified “from” price.
A 12-player ceiling makes this plan easier to budget but less suitable for a community that may grow quickly. Confirm whether the 12-player number is hard-enforced, whether extra slots can be added, and whether automatic updates can be scheduled so an update does not interrupt an event.

Backups and restoration

Verify the retention period, backup location, restore time and whether backups include configuration and mod data as well as the save. A backup that cannot be restored from the control panel or through support is not equivalent to a tested recovery option.

Choose a server region close to most players, because physical distance and routing affect latency even when the plan has sufficient RAM.
Automatic updates
Shockbyte’s cited listing includes automatic updates. This reduces maintenance but can introduce a game or mod version mismatch immediately before an event. Look for a schedule, maintenance window, manual update switch and a way to roll back configuration or saves.
Refunds and trials
Shockbyte’s listing specifies a 72-hour refund window. The other cited entries do not provide a comparable refund term. Read the eligibility rules: some policies exclude consumed time, upgrades, prepaid periods or custom configurations. A refund window is useful for testing connectivity and administration, but it is not a substitute for checking the plan’s actual resource limits.

- Choose the capacity model. Select a RAM tier if mods and mission complexity are your main concerns; select slots if your community has a stable, known peak.
- Pick a region. Put the server near the majority of players and confirm that the provider allows region changes later.
- Confirm the contract. Check recurring versus promotional pricing, billing interval, cancellation, refund eligibility and any setup fee.
- Install the baseline server. Use the host panel’s official Arma Reforger option, then start once with no custom mods to establish a known-good configuration.
- Set administration. Add administrators, a password or access controls, and the server name and description before inviting the whole group.
- Add mods in small batches. Install one or a few at a time, start the server, and test a mission. Keep a written list of versions so you can identify the change that caused a failure.
- Configure recovery. Create a manual backup before large mod changes and verify that the restore process is available to you.
- Schedule maintenance. Set update windows outside events and tell players when restarts will occur.

Install the server with SteamCMD
The stable dedicated-server application ID is 1874900; the experimental application ID is 1890870. Use the stable ID for a production community unless you specifically need experimental builds.
- Install SteamCMD on the machine that will run the server.
- Start SteamCMD and sign in anonymously if the installation instructions for your platform permit it.
- Run an app update for
1874900for the stable build, or1890870for the experimental build, then wait for validation to finish. - Keep the installation directory separate from your configuration and backup directories so an update does not overwrite your recovery files.
A typical SteamCMD update command is steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 1874900 validate +quit. Replace the app ID only when you intentionally want the experimental branch, and use the path and executable names documented for your operating system.
Create and validate the JSON configuration
Server configuration is JSON and parameter names are case-sensitive. A misspelled key can prevent a setting from applying even when the file appears readable. Validate the file after every edit, keep a known-good copy, and change one setting at a time. Bohemia’s guidance recommends keeping fastValidation set to true for public hosting. Do not paste comments into strict JSON unless the server documentation explicitly supports them.
Open the required ports

Home hosting usually fails at the router rather than in the game configuration. Forward UDP port 2001 to the machine’s fixed local address, allow the same traffic in the operating-system firewall, and test from outside your home network. Do not expose RCON broadly; limit it to trusted administration paths and use the authentication settings documented for the server.
Start the correct executable
Startup parameters apply to the Server executable. Keep the executable path, configuration path and log location explicit in your service, scheduled task or launch script. Run the process under a dedicated operating-system account where practical, and capture logs so a failed start can be distinguished from a network or mod problem.
VPS versus a home machine
VPS
A general VPS can be cheaper than a managed game host, but the saving is exchanged for administration. Troubleshooting the common failures
The server does not appear publicly
- Confirm the Server process is running and listening on UDP 2001.
- Check the operating-system firewall and, for home hosting, the router forward to the correct local address.
- Verify that the public address is not behind carrier-grade NAT or another upstream firewall.
- Check that the configuration is valid JSON and that
fastValidationremains true for a public server.
Players cannot join after a mod change
- Check that every client has the same mod names and versions.
- Remove the newest mod temporarily and start from the last known-good backup.
- Confirm that the host’s mod installer completed rather than leaving a partial download.
- Restart after changes and record the working combination for the next update.
An update breaks the event server
- Use the provider’s maintenance scheduling or disable automatic updates during the event window when possible.
- Restore the previous configuration and save backup if the host supports rollback.
- Check whether the game build and mod versions now differ between server and clients.
- Keep a separate test instance for experimental builds instead of switching the production server to app ID

The server runs out of capacity
