The right Android TV box depends on your television’s video support, your sound system, network connection, storage needs and local budget—not simply a 4K label. These five candidates cover different priorities, but they are a shortlist rather than a tested ranking: prices and availability vary by country, and the evidence here does not establish a current value winner.
What to check before choosing a box
A streaming box connects to a television over HDMI and provides its own app interface. Whether it is a useful upgrade depends on the exact device: app availability and experience can vary, so confirm that the services you use support the specific model in your region.

- Picture: Check the TV’s supported resolution, HDR formats and refresh rate alongside the box’s specifications. A device’s 4K or HDR capability does not mean every programme will be available in that format; the television, streaming service and individual title must also support it.
- Audio: If you use a soundbar or AV receiver, match its supported formats to the box. Dolby Atmos support and audio pass-through formats such as Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD describe different capabilities, not interchangeable guarantees.
- Network and ports: Gigabit Ethernet can matter if Wi-Fi is unreliable. Check USB or other ports if you plan to attach storage or peripherals.
- Storage and apps: Compare nominal capacity, remembering that system software uses some of it. Confirm the apps you need and regional certification for the exact model.
- Price and availability: Check the current model and price where you live. The available information does not provide a consistent, current price comparison across all five candidates.

Which one fits your setup?
- Choose the SHIELD TV Pro for documented USB and pass-through options. Its listed USB expansion and named audio pass-through formats are relevant if you connect storage or a home-theater receiver. Check that your full audio chain supports the formats you intend to use.
- Consider the Google TV Streamer for 32 GB storage, wired networking and Google smart-home functions. The cited US listing also specifies Matter and a Thread border router. Treat those as fit criteria only if your other devices and setup use compatible features.
- Consider the Xiaomi model if its listed format support and compact box suit your needs. Its cited Colombia specification lists 32 GB storage, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, plus HDMI 2.1 and USB 2.0. Confirm the local model and supported services.
- Check the Onn candidate only after identifying the exact box. The guide’s approximate $30 figure and basic-feature description are not enough to establish today’s price, generation or availability.
- Check the RockTek G2 against the precise listing. The cited guide’s reported features can help identify why it may interest you, but verify them for the model sold in your market.
Before you buy
- Write down your TV’s resolution and supported HDR formats, plus the audio formats supported by your soundbar or receiver.
- Decide whether you need wired Ethernet, USB storage or another specific connection, then compare it with the exact box’s specifications.
- Confirm that your essential streaming apps work on that precise model in your country.
- Check the current generation, local stock, price and included accessories. For the Google TV Streamer, account for the separately sold certified HDMI 2.1 cable.
- Set up the box through HDMI, select the TV input, connect to your network and check the device’s display and audio settings against your equipment. A supported format still depends on the TV, service and programme.
Scope of this shortlist
This is a starting shortlist, not a controlled ranking: no hands-on tests or consistent cross-market price comparison establish an overall winner. TechRadar’s January 2026 guide also covers the Fire TV Cube and Khadas Edge2, but the Fire TV Cube uses Amazon’s Fire TV platform rather than Android TV or Google TV, so it is outside this article’s scope. Regional availability, exact generations and local pricing are especially important to verify for Onn and RockTek candidates.
