The strongest Android setup uses several layers: caller-ID and spam filtering for calls, Scam Detection and link warnings in Messages, Play Protect for apps, Safe Browsing for websites, and stronger account sign-in protection. Turn on each layer, then verify unexpected requests through an official app or a number you already trust.
Feature names and availability vary by Android release, device maker, country, language, account type, and the versions of Phone by Google and Google Messages installed. These controls reduce exposure; none guarantees that every spoofed call, scam text, malicious app, or fake support page will be detected.

Start with this Android anti-phishing checklist
Work through the controls in this order. The sequence follows the way most scams reach a phone: an unsolicited call or message, a link or alarming screen, an attempt to install an app, and finally a request for account or payment credentials.
Recommended Free Tools
- Phone: In Phone by Google, open Settings → Caller ID & spam. Keep See caller ID & spam on and enable Filter spam calls when it appears.
- Calls: Report and block repeat offenders from call history. Optionally block private or unidentified callers.
- Messages: Search Android Settings for Scam Detection and leave message scam protection enabled where supported. Keep Google Messages spam and unsafe-link warnings active.
- Apps: In Play Store → profile picture → Play Protect → Settings, keep Scan apps with Play Protect on. Consider Improve harmful app detection if you sideload apps.
- Browser: Keep Safe Browsing, including Live Threat Protection where available, enabled.
- Device and account: Consider Advanced Protection, bank-call verification where your bank supports it, and a FIDO2/WebAuthn security key for your Google Account.
After changing settings, make a test call from a known contact and send yourself a harmless message containing a normal link. You should still receive legitimate communications; protection should add warnings or filtering rather than make the phone unusable.

Reduce phishing calls
Turn on caller ID and spam protection
- Open the Phone by Google app.
- Tap the three-dot menu, choose Settings, then open Caller ID & spam.
- Keep See caller ID & spam enabled.
- Turn on Filter spam calls if that switch is offered.
Google says caller ID and spam protection is on by default. Filtering is not the same as blocking every unknown number: filtered calls remain in call history and can still be checked through voicemail. On devices with automatic Call Screen, the menu may show an automatic spam-blocking option instead of the Filter spam calls switch.
Availability depends on the Phone by Google version, Android release, country, and device configuration. A call that displays a familiar name or number can still be spoofed, so caller ID is a clue, not proof of identity.
Report and block repeat offenders
- Open the Phone app and go to Recents or call history.
- Tap the unwanted call.
- Choose Block or Report spam, then confirm.
Reporting improves the service’s spam signals; blocking prevents that number from calling normally. If a legitimate caller is blocked, open the Phone app’s blocked-number settings and unblock the entry. Because scammers rotate numbers, reporting one number will not stop an entire campaign by itself.
Decide whether to block private callers
Phone by Google can block private or unidentified callers. This setting still permits unsaved numbers that present a number, so it targets callers who deliberately withhold caller ID rather than all strangers. It can also hide legitimate calls from hospitals, government offices, or businesses that suppress their number. If you enable it, check voicemail and call history regularly for an expected call.
Recognize the limits of call screening
Google documents fake-call detection requirements of Android 12 or newer, Phone by Google, Contacts, and Google Messages with RCS enabled. A compatible phone may expose additional automatic screening or spam autoblocking controls. These features can reduce interruptions, but caller-ID spoofing remains possible and no setting establishes that a caller truly represents a bank, delivery company, or support department.
Stop scam texts and dangerous message links
Enable Scam Detection when your phone supports it
- Open Android Settings and use the search field for Scam Detection.
- Open the result and keep Message scams enabled.
- When Google Messages displays a red warning or the action Likely scam, do not reply, call the number in the message, or open its link.
On supported devices, Scam Detection can inspect a suspicious conversation and add a warning. Google says the feature is on by default on supported devices, but it may not catch every scam. Message content remains private unless you choose to share a selected message to improve detection. That optional sharing is different from granting an app broad access to all of your messages.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
If the Scam Detection search result is absent, the feature may not be offered for your device, country, language, account, or current Messages version. Keep Google Messages updated through the Play Store and use its built-in spam reporting even when the dedicated control is unavailable.

Google Messages provides spam and scam protection and can warn about links from unknown users. Eligibility is determined by the device, region, language, app, and account configuration. Do not disable these warnings simply because a legitimate sender was flagged once; instead, report a false positive or use a trusted channel to confirm the sender.
A message that appears to come from a saved contact can still be malicious if that person’s account was compromised. Treat urgent requests for gift cards, passwords, one-time codes, remote access, or payment as suspicious even when the conversation looks familiar.
Handle a suspicious message safely
- Pause before tapping. Read the sender address, number, spelling, and requested action.
- Use Report spam or Block in Google Messages for unwanted conversations.
- Verify the claim independently. Open the organization’s official app or type its known web address yourself; do not use the message’s link or phone number.
- If you already entered credentials, change them from the official service, revoke unfamiliar sessions, and contact the relevant bank or provider using its published contact method.
Protect against malicious apps and fake support screens
Leave Google Play Protect enabled
- Open the Play Store.
- Tap your profile picture, choose Play Protect, and tap the Settings gear.
- Keep Scan apps with Play Protect enabled.
- If you install apps outside Google Play, consider enabling Improve harmful app detection.
Play Protect checks apps from Google Play and sideloaded sources. It can warn about harmful behavior, disable or remove a harmful app, and block some unverified installations that request sensitive permissions commonly abused for financial fraud. Google recommends always keeping Play Protect on.
A clean scan is not a guarantee that an app is trustworthy in every situation. Review an app’s requested permissions, developer identity, update history, and reason for installation. Be especially cautious when a caller or web page tells you to sideload a “support,” “security,” or “refund” app.

Google Play Protect Service includes phishing detection that can analyze device screens locally. Its control is available in Android Settings and can be managed separately for personal and work profiles. Local analysis limits the need to send screen contents away from the device, but work-profile administrators may control the setting on a managed phone.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- USB TYPE C Connectivity & DONGLE Design: Designed for PCs, Macs, laptops, iPhones, and Android devices that utilize a USB-C port. Plug and stay, or carry it on a keychain. (Item Size: 0.73 x 0.60 x 0.30 inches)
- Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC functionality is not supported.
A fake virus alert, locked-screen demand, or support pop-up is not proof that the phone is infected. Do not call the number shown in the pop-up or grant accessibility, notification-reading, device-administrator, or screen-sharing access because a pop-up told you to. Close the tab or app, uninstall software you installed immediately before the warning, run a Play Protect scan, and restart the phone. If the warning returns, inspect recently installed apps and browser notifications from the browser’s site-permission settings.
Consider Advanced Protection for a high-risk account
Advanced Protection adds stronger controls on supported Android devices, including blocking many unknown-app installations, Safe Browsing Live Threat Protection, Scam Detection requirements, and other safeguards. It is aimed at people facing elevated risk, such as public-facing professionals, administrators, or anyone targeted repeatedly. Check the enrollment screen for the exact requirements and recovery implications before activating it; some controls can make unusual app installations and account recovery more restrictive.
Keep the browser from becoming the phishing path
Leave Android Safe Browsing active. Google says Safe Browsing Live Threat Protection can block phishing attacks from fast-emerging malicious websites. Browser warnings should be treated as a stop signal, not as an invitation to continue after dismissing the page.
- Do not enter passwords, payment details, recovery codes, or identity numbers on a page reached through an unsolicited call or message.
- Close pages that demand remote-control software, a “security scan,” or an urgent payment to remove a threat.
- Reach a service by opening its installed official app or typing a known address yourself.
- Review browser notification permissions and remove sites you do not recognize.
Safe Browsing improves detection of known and emerging threats, but a newly created phishing page may not yet be classified. Your verification step remains necessary.
Verify incoming bank calls when supported
Some banks can verify a supported incoming call through their official Android app. The documented requirements are Android 11 or later, the official bank app installed, and a prior sign-in. Participation varies by financial institution.
- Install the bank’s app only from a trusted store listing and sign in before you need call verification.
- When a supported bank call arrives, look for the verification information in the bank app rather than trusting the caller’s statement.
- If verification is unavailable, end the call and contact the bank through the number on your card or inside the official app.
Caller-ID spoofing remains possible when the bank does not support this feature or the requirements are not met. Never disclose a one-time passcode, full password, or remote-access approval to an inbound caller.

Harden the Google Account behind the phone
Google’s Advanced Protection uses security keys to protect against phishing and recommends a stronger second step than text-message codes. A compatible USB-C or NFC FIDO2/WebAuthn key provides a physical sign-in factor that a phishing page cannot copy in the same way as a typed code.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that your Android phone, browser, Google Account, and the key’s USB-C or NFC connection are compatible.
- Register at least two keys if the account is important, storing the spare securely so a lost key does not lock you out.
- Keep recovery information current and understand the account-recovery process before enabling stronger protection.
Security keys protect account sign-in; they do not stop a scammer from calling or texting. Continue using the call, message, app, and browser controls above.
How the protections compare
| Attack channel | Control | Automation | Availability requirements | Privacy and reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone calls | Caller ID & spam; Filter spam calls; report and block | Labels, filters, and user-selected blocking | Phone by Google; labels and switches vary by device and region | Call-number processing is involved; settings can be changed and numbers unblocked |
| SMS and chats | Scam Detection; Messages spam and link warnings | Warnings and a Likely scam action | Supported device, language, region, account, and Messages version | Message content stays private unless you choose to share a selected message; false positives can be reported |
| Installed apps | Google Play Protect | Scans, warns, disables, removes, or blocks some installs | Google Play services and a supported Android device | Can be turned off, but doing so removes a major safety layer; sideload detection is an optional enhancement |
| On-screen phishing | Play Protect Service phishing detection | Local screen analysis and warnings | Supported Android build; personal and work profiles may have separate controls | Local analysis limits data exposure; profile administrators may manage work settings |
| Websites | Safe Browsing Live Threat Protection | Blocks or warns about malicious pages | Supported browser, Android release, and region | Easy to keep enabled or disable; a new page may not yet be classified |
| Bank calls | In-app bank-call verification | Confirms supported incoming calls | Android 11+, official bank app, prior sign-in, participating bank | Depends on the bank; spoofing remains possible without it |
| Account sign-in | Advanced Protection with FIDO2/WebAuthn security keys | Blocks sign-ins that lack the required key | Compatible key, phone, browser, and Google Account | Strong phishing resistance, with stricter recovery and a need to safeguard spare keys |
Fixes when a setting is missing or too aggressive
The menu or switch is not present
Update Phone by Google, Google Messages, the Play Store, and Google Play services. Recheck the Android Settings search using the exact term Scam Detection. If it still does not appear, assume the feature is not available for that device, language, region, account, or release rather than installing an unofficial replacement.
A legitimate call or message was filtered
Check call history, voicemail, and the Messages spam folder. Report a false positive through the relevant app, then unblock or restore the conversation. Add important contacts to your address book, but remember that a saved name does not prove that a caller or message is genuine.
Protection blocks an app you genuinely need
First obtain the app from its official source and confirm that the developer and requested permissions are expected. Do not disable Play Protect merely because a caller insists. If you must use a specialized sideloaded app, review the warning, scan the file, and remove it when the task is complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou enabled strict protection and lost an account or app workflow
Use the recovery methods you prepared before enrollment, including a spare security key where applicable. For a work profile, contact the organization’s administrator rather than changing managed settings. Document which control caused the block so you can adjust one setting at a time.
A practical response when a scam gets through
- Stop the interaction: hang up, close the page, or stop replying.
- Do not grant access: refuse remote control, accessibility, screen-sharing, or device-administrator requests.
- Verify independently: use an official app, a number printed on a card, or a web address you entered yourself.
- Contain damage: change exposed passwords, revoke active sessions, contact your bank, and report fraudulent transactions immediately.
- Clean up: uninstall suspicious apps, run Play Protect, review browser permissions, and block or report the sender.
Maintenance schedule
- After an incident: change credentials from a trusted device and review account activity.
- Monthly: check Phone and Messages spam folders, blocked numbers, Play Protect status, and browser notification permissions.
- After an Android or app update: revisit the menus because labels and feature availability can change.
- Before travel or a major transaction: confirm that the bank app works, your security key is available, and recovery details are current.
These settings work best as overlapping barriers. Filtering reduces interruptions, warnings create a pause, Play Protect limits malicious software, Safe Browsing blocks dangerous pages, and independent verification prevents a convincing spoof from becoming a financial or account compromise.
