Nova Launcher is the strongest documented choice if you want to assign gestures to launch apps or launcher actions. Niagara Launcher suits a different style: it exposes app shortcuts through pop-ups and a launcher button on its list-centered home screen. Microsoft Launcher supports ordinary long-press app shortcuts and adds Microsoft-connected productivity features, but its cited support page does not document gesture assignments comparable to Nova’s. These are feature-based distinctions, not results from hands-on testing.
What “customizing shortcuts” can mean
A shortcut is not always the same thing as a gesture. When choosing a launcher, first decide what you want to happen and what action should trigger it. Three different needs often get bundled under the word “shortcuts”:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Launch an app or launcher action with a gesture. For example, a swipe on the home screen could open an app. Nova’s official feature page specifically documents gestures that start apps or Nova Actions.
- Open an app’s own shortcuts from its icon or a pop-up. Some apps expose actions of their own, and a launcher may make those actions easier to reach. Niagara documents launching an app’s shortcuts from pop-ups.
- Change how apps are arranged and reached. A grid-oriented desktop, an app drawer, folders, a button, or a list-based screen can change the route to an app without assigning a custom gesture.
These are related, but they are not interchangeable. A launcher that lets you reach an app’s shortcuts from a pop-up has not necessarily let you assign any swipe you like to that app. Likewise, long-pressing an icon is useful shortcut access, but it is not evidence of a custom gesture system.

At a glance: which launcher fits which shortcut style?
| Launcher | Documented shortcut interaction | Cost or tier information in cited materials | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nova Launcher | Nova Prime gestures can start Nova Actions or apps, including pinch, swipe, and two-finger swipe actions on the desktop. | Free to install; Prime is described as a yearly subscription or lifetime purchase. Prices are not stated on the cited product page. | People who specifically want assigned gestures for apps or launcher actions. |
| Niagara Launcher | The Button can launch an app in the free version. App pop-ups can expose an app’s shortcuts; Pro adds more Button assignments and pop-up-folder options. | Basic Button app assignment is free. The listed extra Button and folder features require Niagara Pro; prices are not stated in the cited feature descriptions. | People who prefer a list-centered home screen and want shortcuts available through a button or app pop-up. |
| Microsoft Launcher | Long-press an app shortcut on the home screen or in the app drawer. | The cited support page describes Microsoft Launcher but does not state a price or paid shortcut tier. | People interested in Microsoft-connected productivity content and ordinary app-shortcut interaction. |
The table reflects vendor product and support documentation, not a comparative speed, reliability, or usability test. “Not stated” means the cited materials do not establish a price or tier for that item; it is not a claim that no charge or restriction exists. For Niagara, the button and pop-up routes are distinct: the documentation does not promise that every app icon can be assigned any custom swipe.
Nova Launcher: choose it for assigned app and action gestures
Nova replaces the home screen and offers customization of the desktop, app drawer, dock, folders, and icons. For shortcut-focused users, the key distinction is that Nova’s official page documents gesture assignments as a Prime feature: gestures can start Nova Actions or apps. The listed desktop gestures include pinching, swiping, and two-finger swiping.
What the gesture feature means in practice
If your goal is “perform a gesture on the desktop to open a chosen app,” Nova’s documented feature is the most direct match among these three launchers. Nova Actions also matter: the documented target is not limited to apps, because the feature page says gestures can start Nova Actions as well. The source does not provide a complete catalog of available actions or a current, step-by-step setup path, so confirm the choices presented in your installed version rather than assuming every action is available on every device.

Nova also lists notification badges and drawer folders among Prime features. These can make app access and organization more useful, but they are separate from gesture assignment. If you only want an organized drawer or a more customizable desktop, those features may matter independently of whether you use a gesture.
Nova’s paid-tier qualification
Nova is described as free to install, while the gesture capability is listed as part of Nova Prime. The official homepage describes Prime as available through a yearly subscription or a lifetime purchase; it does not provide a price in the cited material. Check the current offer and terms before paying, since the amount and availability can change.
Nova’s official product page is Nova Launcher’s homepage, and its official FAQ notes that the recents screen is tied to the stock launcher. That is useful context: a third-party home-screen app does not control every system-level screen. If the behavior you want involves app launching from the desktop, that is different from expecting a launcher to replace or fully customize Android’s recents experience.

Niagara Launcher: use the Button and pop-ups for shortcut access
Niagara’s approach is not simply a smaller version of Nova’s gesture system. Its documented routes center on the Niagara Button and app pop-ups, within a list-based home-screen design. This can suit someone who would rather reach apps through a focused list than build a conventional grid of icons and assign desktop gestures.
What is available without Pro
Niagara’s help page says the free version lets you assign an app to the Niagara Button. The button therefore provides a direct route to one selected app without requiring the user to find it in the app list. Niagara’s Niagara Button help page describes the feature and distinguishes the free app assignment from additional Pro options.
What Niagara Pro adds
Niagara Pro adds the ability to assign shortcuts and folders to the Button, a secondary action triggered by swiping up, and pop-up folders. These options make the button more flexible, but the distinction matters: the free Button app assignment is not the same as assigning an app shortcut or folder, and the Pro swipe-up secondary action is not evidence that any app icon can receive an arbitrary custom swipe.

How app pop-ups differ from assigning a gesture
Niagara’s help explains that basic app pop-ups can be used to check notifications and launch an app’s shortcuts. Its tips page also says swiping an app to the right opens app shortcuts or notifications. This is a specific interaction with an app in Niagara’s interface; it should not be confused with assigning a desktop gesture that launches an app directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn other words, Niagara can make an app’s own shortcut actions accessible from a pop-up, while Nova explicitly documents gestures that start apps or Nova Actions. If your need is to open an app directly with a swipe on its icon, verify that the exact interaction is available rather than inferring it from Niagara’s pop-up or Button features. A user request published on July 15, 2025, phrases that desired behavior as “open an app directly by swiping on an icon”; it is a feature request, not evidence that Niagara currently provides it. See the Niagara feedback request.

Microsoft Launcher: long-press shortcuts and productivity content
Microsoft positions its launcher around home-screen customization and productivity across devices, including calendar, to-do, and Sticky Notes content. Its support material describes long-pressing an app shortcut on either the home screen or in the app drawer. That is a documented way to interact with an app shortcut, but the cited documentation does not describe gesture assignments at the level Nova’s feature page does.
Microsoft Launcher is therefore a reasonable candidate if those Microsoft-connected content features are part of what you want from a home screen and long-press shortcut interaction is sufficient. If your deciding requirement is assigning a swipe or pinch to launch a chosen app or launcher action, the documentation reviewed here does not establish that Microsoft Launcher meets it.
Microsoft Support lists Android 7.0 or higher as the requirement. Read the Microsoft Launcher on Android support page for the vendor’s setup and usage guidance. The page does not establish a price or a custom gesture feature, so neither should be inferred from its discussion of home-screen customization.

- Write down the trigger and result. For example: “swipe on the desktop to open an app,” “open the app’s shortcuts from its pop-up,” or “long-press an app icon.” Being exact prevents ordinary shortcut access from being mistaken for gesture assignment.
- Match the interaction to the documentation. Nova Prime is the clearest documented fit for launching apps or Nova Actions with desktop gestures. Niagara documents app shortcuts through pop-ups and additional Button assignments in Pro. Microsoft documents long-press app shortcuts.
- Decide whether the free feature is enough. Niagara’s free Button can launch an app; its listed shortcut and folder assignments, swipe-up secondary action, and pop-up folders are Pro features. Nova’s listed gesture assignment is a Prime feature. The cited Microsoft support page does not identify a paid shortcut tier.
- Choose a home-screen style you will actually use. Nova offers customization of a desktop, app drawer, dock, folders, and icons. Niagara centers its design on a list and its Button and pop-ups. Microsoft combines home-screen customization with productivity content such as calendar, to-do, and Sticky Notes material.
- Check your Android version and device behavior. Microsoft’s support page requires Android 7.0 or higher. For any launcher, test the gesture navigation and recents behavior you rely on with your particular device and operating-system version before reorganizing your home screen around it.
- Verify paid terms and current feature availability. The cited Nova page describes yearly and lifetime Prime purchase options without captured prices; Niagara’s cited feature descriptions identify Pro features without captured prices. Confirm the current offer and feature details before paying.
Gesture navigation and recents: a device-specific caveat
Third-party launchers do not necessarily control every Android interaction. Nova’s FAQ says the recents screen is tied to the stock launcher. Niagara’s support article describes gesture navigation and recents compatibility as an area of concern for third-party launchers. This does not establish a universal current defect: behavior can vary with the device and OS, and the cited sources do not provide a device-by-device compatibility matrix.
Before committing to a launcher, check the behavior that matters on your own setup: whether system gesture navigation still feels right, whether the recents screen opens as expected, and whether the app-launching gesture you chose conflicts with a system gesture. If recents or navigation behaves differently than you expect, first distinguish a launcher feature from a system-level action; the launcher may not own that screen. Niagara’s support explanation is at Gesture Navigation Issues.
Common shortcut-selection mistakes
- Assuming every swipe means the same thing. A swipe on the desktop, a swipe on an app in a list, and a swipe-up secondary action on Niagara’s Button are different triggers with different documented outcomes.
- Confusing an app’s shortcuts with an app-launch gesture. Niagara pop-ups can expose an app’s shortcuts; Nova’s Prime gestures can start apps or Nova Actions. One capability does not imply the other.
- Assuming a feature request is a current feature. The Niagara request about opening an app directly by swiping on its icon records a desired behavior; it does not establish that the feature exists.
- Comparing the free version of one launcher with paid capabilities of another. Nova’s documented gesture assignments are part of Prime, and Niagara’s listed extra Button and folder options are Pro features. Compare the tier you would actually use.
- Expecting a home-screen replacement to own the entire Android interface. Recents and gesture navigation can involve stock-launcher or device/OS behavior. Evaluate those separately from app access on the home screen.
- Reading feature descriptions as performance tests. The official materials establish documented capabilities; they do not rank speed, battery impact, reliability, or ease of use on your phone.
Bottom line by use case
- Pick Nova Launcher if your priority is assigning desktop gestures to open apps or Nova Actions, and Prime’s paid status and current terms work for you.
- Pick Niagara Launcher if you prefer a list-centered home screen and want app shortcuts accessible through pop-ups or a Button, with Pro available for its additional Button and folder options.
- Consider Microsoft Launcher if you value its Microsoft-connected productivity content and ordinary long-press app shortcuts; do not choose it on the assumption that the cited support page confirms Nova-style gesture assignments.
Whichever route you choose, test the exact trigger and destination you care about on your device. The documented feature differences are clear; real-world navigation and recents behavior remain device-specific.
