The right Android keyboard depends on how you hold your device. For one-handed typing, choose a compact layout docked to the left or right; for two-thumb typing on a wide phone, foldable, tablet, or landscape screen, a split layout may be easier to reach. Microsoft SwiftKey documents both modes, while Gboard offers a one-handed mode and glide typing. Neither the available feature descriptions nor store listings establish a universal winner for typing speed or accuracy, so try the layout on your own device.
Which keyboard layout fits your grip?
One-handed and two-thumb layouts solve different reach problems. A one-handed mode shrinks the keyboard and moves it toward one side of the screen. A split-thumb mode separates the keys into left and right groups so each thumb can reach its half. A compact layout is the relevant choice when holding and typing with one hand; splitting the keys is intended for two thumbs on a wider screen.

How do you set up a one-handed or split layout?
Microsoft SwiftKey
Microsoft documents five Android keyboard modes: Full, One-handed, Float, Thumb/split, and Tablet. In One-handed mode the keyboard is reduced in width and can be placed on either side. Thumb mode separates it into two halves; Microsoft describes it as potentially useful on larger devices, including tablets, or in landscape. These are documented layout options, not a claim that one mode is faster.

- Open the keyboard’s toolbar or mode controls and select the keyboard layout or mode option.
- Choose One-handed for a compact side-docked layout, or Thumb for a split layout. Menu labels and placement can vary by app version.
- Use the on-screen controls to select the side or adjust the size and position if available; check the result in the orientation and app where you plan to type.
Microsoft’s instructions for the available modes are at SwiftKey keyboard modes. Its separate SwiftKey usage guide covers resizing, repositioning, Flow, and language features.

Gboard
Google Play lists a one-handed mode that pins Gboard to the left or right on large-screen phones. The listing identifies the feature but does not provide a setup path in the reviewed material, so look for the one-handed control in Gboard’s keyboard toolbar or settings; the exact location can depend on the installed version and device.
Can you swipe to type?
Yes. Google says you can slide a finger from letter to letter to spell a word using Gboard’s glide typing. Its instructions note that steps may differ on manufacturer-customized Android versions and that some directions apply only to Android 8.0 and up. Google’s help page explains how to check keyboard options, including Glide typing: Gboard glide typing help.

SwiftKey calls its swipe input Flow. Microsoft says Flow lets you glide across letters and can continue through the spacebar into another word without lifting your finger. Both keyboards therefore document swipe-style input, but the sources do not compare their speed or accuracy under controlled conditions.
What else should you compare before choosing?
Screen size and orientation
On a standard phone in portrait, a compact keyboard shifted to your holding hand can reduce how far your thumb must stretch. On a large phone, foldable, tablet, or landscape screen, a split layout may put each half within reach of a different thumb. A floating keyboard is another SwiftKey mode, but its usefulness depends on where you place it and how you hold the device.

Languages and keyboard layout
Confirm that the app supports the languages, alphabet, and specific layout you need. Microsoft’s current Google Play listing advertises more than 700 languages and up to five enabled simultaneously; these are vendor claims, and support can change. Microsoft’s support article has passages with conflicting simultaneous-language counts, so check the app for the current options rather than relying on an older figure. The listing is at Microsoft SwiftKey on Google Play.
Customization and extra input
Google Play describes Gboard features including voice typing, handwriting, themes, cursor and delete gestures, and emoji/GIF features alongside glide typing. Microsoft’s listing advertises adjustable size and layout, themes, autocorrect, predictions, and swipe and tap input. These descriptions can help narrow the options, but the feature that matters most for thumb reach is whether the installed version lets you position and size the keyboard comfortably.

Privacy and device integration
A keyboard handles text input, so review the app’s current privacy disclosures and any account or cloud features you choose to enable. Google Play’s data-safety sections are developer-provided and may vary by region, age, and use; they are not an independent audit of all processing. Gboard’s listing was updated June 30, 2026, and includes a data-safety section: Gboard on Google Play. SwiftKey’s listing also includes developer-provided data-safety disclosures.

What about privacy-focused alternatives?
An Android Authority roundup describes HeliBoard as a free, open-source keyboard that works offline and includes gesture typing, autocorrect, clipboard history, incognito mode, and customization. It also discusses FUTO Keyboard’s offline voice typing. Those details come from a secondary source rather than official documentation verified here, so treat them as options to investigate, not as confirmed comparative advantages. The roundup is at Android Authority’s guide to Android keyboard alternatives.
If offline operation is a priority, check the keyboard project’s own documentation and settings before installing it. A store privacy label or a general offline claim alone does not establish every detail of data handling.
How to choose without a speed or accuracy ranking
- Decide whether you mainly type with one hand or two thumbs.
- Try a side-docked compact layout for one-handed use; try a split layout for two-thumb use on a wide screen.
- Test in your usual apps and in the orientations where you type. Check reach, key size, and whether the keyboard blocks content you need to see.
- Verify the required languages, layouts, and input methods in the installed app.
- Review the current privacy disclosures and settings for the app you choose.
No controlled comparison in the reviewed sources establishes which keyboard is fastest or most accurate for thumb typing, and comfort varies by device and hand position. The practical choice is the layout that feels reachable and dependable on your own handset.
