Gboard is a strong starting point for broad built-in features and multilingual typing; SwiftKey’s stated default keeps personal and language data on-device unless you opt into an account; AnySoftKeyboard offers open-source language packages; and Urik Keyboard is a newer beta option for people willing to evaluate a less-established project.
How to choose an Android keyboard for privacy and multiple languages
“Supports a language” can mean a keyboard layout, a dictionary, autocorrection, next-word prediction, transliteration, handwriting, or voice typing. Those capabilities do not necessarily arrive together. Before switching, check that the app supports your exact language and script, the layout you prefer, and the specific input modes you rely on. Also confirm whether it can keep your needed languages active together.

Privacy is similarly specific. Local word learning, cloud backup and synchronization, optional product-improvement sharing, voice processing, and Android permissions are separate behaviors. Open-source code can make a project more inspectable, but it does not by itself prove that a particular app build is safe or that no data leaves your device. The privacy descriptions below are statements from the respective developers or app listings, not independent security audits. No comparative typing-quality or performance ranking is established here.
- For a broad built-in feature set: start with Gboard and verify the modes available for your language and device.
- For on-device learning unless you opt into cloud features: consider SwiftKey, with its account and optional sharing settings left off.
- For an open-source keyboard with language packages: consider AnySoftKeyboard and review its permissions.
- For local customization in a newer project: assess Urik Keyboard if you are comfortable using beta software.
How the four keyboards compare
| Keyboard | Language and input details in the available sources | Privacy points to consider | Release or Android requirement noted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gboard | Multilingual suggestions and autocorrection across enabled languages; language keyboards and layouts, handwriting where available, Glide Typing, voice typing, search, emoji and GIF access are documented. | Federated learning is enabled by default and can be turned off. Audio donation is optional; supported Pixel advanced voice typing has a distinct on-device behavior with exceptions for Fix and detailed edits. | Not stated in the cited product materials summarized here. |
| Microsoft SwiftKey | Personalization uses machine learning; verify your particular language combination and features in the current app. | Microsoft says personal and language data stay local if you do not opt into a SwiftKey account. Account services can use cloud processing; optional improvement sharing can include short typing snippets. | Not stated in the cited product materials summarized here. |
| AnySoftKeyboard | External language packages, completion dictionaries, next-word prediction, themes, voice input and gesture options. Its project site advertises 50+ languages through packages. | The project describes the app as privacy-oriented and says it collects zero data. Its F-Droid listing includes contact access, which can support contact-name completion. | F-Droid listing: version 1.13.8175, added March 11, 2026; Android 6.0 or newer. |
| Urik Keyboard | F-Droid lists 19 supported languages with merged dictionaries, plus layout, theme, key-size, haptic and accessibility controls. | The listing describes local processing, no network permissions or telemetry, encrypted local data, and a local next-word model. Gboard: a feature-rich starting point, with privacy settings to understand
Google documents a broad set of input tools in Gboard, including Glide Typing, voice typing, built-in search, emoji and GIF access, and multilingual suggestions and autocorrection across enabled languages in the same conversation. Current Google help materials also cover adding language keyboards and layouts, switching languages, handwriting where available, and changing themes, sound, and vibration. Availability of particular languages and modes—especially voice and handwriting—varies, so check for your own language and device rather than assuming every feature is present.

Google describes federated learning as enabled by default, with an option to turn it off. Personalized transcripts can be retained on-device and deleted through Gboard privacy settings. Audio donation is a separate opt-in: if you agree, audio snippets may be sent to Google for speech-improvement work, and human reviewers may listen to or transcribe some snippets.
On supported Pixel devices, advanced voice typing keeps spoken text on-device except when you invoke Fix or detailed edits. Those requests send the transcript and the text in the input field to Google servers for processing. This distinction matters: voice features do not all have the same data path, and the Pixel behavior should not be generalized to every Android phone.

SwiftKey: local by default unless you opt into account features
Microsoft says that without opting into a SwiftKey account on Android, personal and language data generated by the keyboard are stored locally and not transferred. Enabling an account makes services such as Backup & Sync process data in Microsoft’s cloud. Microsoft’s typing-data explanation says synchronization sends fragments about words and their usage.

Microsoft says SwiftKey does not learn from fields marked as password fields and does not remember long credit-card numbers. That protection depends on the app or website correctly identifying the field: passwords typed into messages or email, and fields with “show password” enabled, can be learned. Microsoft says a remembered word can be removed from the language model. Check your exact language combination in the app; the available source material does not establish a comparative typing-quality winner.
AnySoftKeyboard: open source with installable language packages
AnySoftKeyboard’s F-Droid listing describes a customizable, open-source keyboard with language packages, completion dictionaries, next-word prediction, themes, voice input and gesture options. The project website advertises support for 50+ languages via external packages, as well as incognito mode that stops word learning. That language figure and the project’s privacy statements are claims from the project, not independently verified measurements or certifications.

Quick Recap
A practical way to make the choice
- Write down your language requirements. Note each language and script, preferred layout, and whether you need a dictionary, transliteration, handwriting, or voice input. Check those exact combinations in the candidate app.
- Decide what “private” means for your use. Separate local learning from cloud sync, optional sharing, voice processing, and requested permissions. Do not treat an open-source label or a privacy claim as proof of an independent security review.
- Review optional features before enabling them. For Gboard, examine personalization, audio donation and voice-editing behavior. For SwiftKey, check account services and improvement sharing. For AnySoftKeyboard, consider whether contact-name completion and its permission are useful to you.
- Try the keyboard in the apps where you type. Confirm that layouts, language switching, password fields, and accessibility controls behave as you expect. A feature being listed does not establish that its quality or behavior is identical across devices and apps.
- Check compatibility and release status. The cited listings specify Android 6.0 or newer for AnySoftKeyboard and Android 8.0 or newer for Urik; Urik’s cited version is beta. App versions, language coverage and feature availability may change.
