The best Surface Laptop alternative depends on which part of the experience you want to keep. For a compact Windows clamshell, consider the 2026 Dell XPS 13. If you are open to macOS, compare the Apple MacBook Air; for a particularly light Windows laptop, look at the ASUS Zenbook A14; and for a touchscreen that folds into tablet-style positions, consider the Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition 14.
These are not direct substitutes in every respect. Check the exact model and configuration for operating system, screen size and touch support, weight, ports, memory, storage, local price and battery-test conditions before choosing.

First, identify which Surface Laptop you are replacing
“Surface Laptop” now refers to several models. Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd edition) with Snapdragon X2 Plus in September 2026, while its June 2026 announcement described 13.8-inch and 15-inch models. Decide which screen size and generation you mean before comparing specifications or prices.
Microsoft describes the 13-inch Surface Laptop as “a thin, light touchscreen laptop with a full-size keyboard built for long days and long documents.” That is Microsoft’s positioning, not an independent test. If that combination is what you want, pay particular attention to the alternatives’ keyboard, screen and touch configuration rather than comparing processor names alone.

Which Surface Laptop alternative should you choose?
Dell XPS 13 (2026): the closest compact Windows clamshell
The XPS 13 is the most straightforward place to start if you want to stay with Windows and keep a traditional compact laptop. Dell’s June 2026 announcement lists a 2.5K touch display, backlit keyboard, Wi-Fi 7, Windows Hello and quad speakers, with Intel Core Series 3 or later Core Ultra Series 3 processor options. Dell’s comparison page lists a starting weight of 2.2 lb and a 2.5K LCD touch display. Weight and specifications can depend on configuration, so confirm the precise listing.
Dell announced a US standard starting price of $699 in 2026. It also described an eligible-student offer starting at $599, with eligibility terms and an offer end date of November 2, 2026; check Dell’s current offer details before relying on it. These are US launch/offer figures, not a current price guarantee for other regions.

- With 16 GB of memory, runs as many programs as you want without losing the execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
Dell’s “up to 17 hours” streaming battery figure is a manufacturer lab result, not a general-use promise. Dell specifies Netflix streaming on a particular Core 5, 16 GB memory and 512 GB storage configuration at 150-nit brightness with other test settings, and warns that actual runtime may be significantly lower and varies with configuration and use. It should not be treated as a directly comparable result against the other laptops here.

The MacBook Air is the cross-platform choice on this list. Apple’s product line includes 13-inch and 15-inch models, and current general-purpose laptop recommendations include the 13-inch Air. Before switching, check that the applications, peripherals and work routines you depend on are supported in macOS; Windows software and workflows do not necessarily transfer without friction.

Compare the particular Air’s screen size, memory, storage and ports with the Surface Laptop configuration you would otherwise buy. The available evidence does not establish a shared-method performance or battery comparison against the Windows options in this guide.
ASUS Zenbook A14: for a light Windows ultraportable
The Zenbook A14 is worth considering when carrying weight is a priority and you want to remain on Windows. Current coverage characterizes it as an especially light Windows ultraportable and reports an extended battery result from a review. That result applies to the tested model and review method, not every A14 configuration. Verify the model generation, local availability, weight and battery details for the exact machine on sale.

Lenovo Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition 14: for a folding touchscreen
The Yoga 9i 2-in-1 Aura Edition 14 is the option for someone who wants a touchscreen and a hinge that folds into alternate use positions while keeping the keyboard attached. It is a convertible, not a like-for-like clamshell and not a detachable Surface Pro. Choose it for the folding form factor, not on the assumption that its design is interchangeable with a standard Surface Laptop.

How to compare configurations before buying
- Match the operating system to your software. XPS, Zenbook and Yoga keep you on Windows; the MacBook Air runs macOS. Check essential applications, peripherals and workflows before changing ecosystems.
- Choose the form factor. XPS and MacBook Air are clamshells, the Zenbook A14 is an ultraportable clamshell, and the Yoga folds as a convertible.
- Confirm the display and touch option. Dell explicitly lists a touch display for the XPS 13. For every candidate, verify the panel and touch support on the exact configuration rather than assuming every product-family version is the same.
- Compare actual size and weight. Use the specifications for the chosen screen size and configuration. Dell lists the XPS 13 at 2.2 lb starting weight; do not assume that figure applies to every configuration or to the other models.
- Match memory, storage and ports to your setup. Compare specific configurations and confirm support for your monitors, external storage and accessories. Product-family maximums do not tell you what a particular listing includes.
- Read battery claims by test method. Separate manufacturer estimates from independent review results. Workload, brightness, settings and configuration affect runtime, so only compare results with sufficiently similar test conditions.
- Check current local pricing and stock. Dell’s cited prices are 2026 US launch and offer information. Prices, offer eligibility and availability can differ by market and change over time; check the seller’s current listing for each exact configuration.
