Best Alternatives to Samsung SmartThings for Managing Smart Home Devices

Choose a SmartThings alternative by matching your existing devices, radios, household ecosystem, and desired level of setup. Matter helps compatible devices work across platforms, but feature and hub requirements still matter.

The best SmartThings alternative depends on the devices and assistants you already use: Google Home suits a Google/Nest household, Apple Home fits an Apple household, Alexa is a natural option for voice-first Alexa users, and Home Assistant offers the most self-managed flexibility. Before switching, check each device’s exact model, radio protocol, hub needs, and supported features; Matter helps compatible devices work across platforms, but it does not guarantee a complete feature-for-feature replacement.

How to choose a SmartThings alternative

Start with the equipment already installed, not a platform popularity list. Make an inventory of device models, existing bridges or hubs, and the automations you rely on. Then compare the alternatives against these practical questions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Compatibility: Does the platform support the exact device model and the controls you use? Support for a brand or Matter in general does not confirm support for every product feature.
  • Connectivity: Does the device use Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread, or another connection? A new app may not replace a hub or bridge that provides the device’s radio connection.
  • Local behavior: Find out whether the intended device and automation can operate over your home network or rely on a cloud service. Platform capabilities do not necessarily mean every integration behaves the same way.
  • Household ecosystem: Consider the phones, voice assistants, and accounts your household already uses.
  • Setup and upkeep: A flexible controller can require more configuration and maintenance than a mainstream app.

Keep existing hubs and bridges until you have confirmed that the replacement can connect to each dependent device. Also treat moving devices and rebuilding automations as separate tasks: Matter can enable device sharing between platforms, but that is not evidence that SmartThings routines migrate automatically.

Which alternative fits your household?

Platform Best fit What to check
Google Home Households seeking a mainstream app, voice control, automations, and Google or Nest integration. Exact device and feature support, the required Google hub, and whether Thread routing is needed.
Apple Home Households already using Apple devices and Siri. Whether an existing HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can serve as a home hub, and whether the accessories’ required features are supported.
Amazon Alexa Households that primarily use Alexa for voice control. The exact Echo model and its radios; do not assume all Echo devices offer the same Matter, Thread, or Zigbee connectivity.
Home Assistant People who want a flexible, self-managed controller and are willing to configure and maintain it. Installation requirements, radio adapters, Thread border-router needs, and whether a native integration exposes more features than Matter.

Google Home: a mainstream Google-centered option

Google describes support for partner devices and Matter, and says it offers over 80,000 compatible Works with Google Home devices. That is Google’s own platform compatibility figure, not an independently verified comparison with SmartThings. Check the exact product and controls you need rather than assuming a brand’s entire catalog is supported. Google’s Matter guidance lists compatible hub categories and distinguishes Wi-Fi-only Matter hubs from models that also act as Thread border routers. Google also says IPv6 must be enabled on the home network for Matter to work properly.

Apple Home: a natural choice for Apple households

Apple says its Home app works across Apple devices. A HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can act as a home hub for remote access and automations, so check whether you already own suitable hardware before buying anything. Apple presents Matter as a way to connect more accessories across platforms, but compatibility for the specific accessory and its features still needs to be verified. Apple’s Home app overview describes the platform and its hub options.

Amazon Alexa: a voice-first route

Alexa is worth considering when voice control through Alexa is central to how your household manages devices. Amazon documents local connectivity options that include Matter over Wi-Fi or Thread, BLE mesh, and Zigbee; the available radios depend on the Echo model, so check the model’s specifications before relying on it as a replacement hub. Amazon’s update log records Matter 1.5 support for Matter-enabled Echo devices as of March 2026; that date does not mean every Echo supports Matter or every Matter feature. Amazon’s local connectivity documentation explains the available connection paths, and its Alexa Smart Home update log records the Matter update.

Home Assistant: flexible, with more to manage

Home Assistant is designed for people prepared to run and configure a dedicated controller. Its documentation covers local Matter control and sharing compatible Matter devices with other platforms, along with installation prerequisites and Thread border-router requirements. It also cautions that Matter may expose fewer product-specific features than a native integration. For example, the guide says Matter provides basic light controls for Hue devices, while the native Hue integration provides additional features. Review the integration options for your own equipment before choosing Matter as the connection method. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation covers setup, sharing, and limitations.

For a ready-made controller, Home Assistant describes Home Assistant Green as official plug-and-play hardware for running its software. Its page lists a recommended MSRP of $199 USD, excluding tax, or €179 including applicable taxes; regional prices and retailer availability vary. Green alone should not be treated as a guarantee of Zigbee or Thread connectivity. The separate Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 is an optional adapter dedicated to either Zigbee or Thread. Its page lists a recommended MSRP of $49 USD, excluding tax, or €45 including applicable taxes, with regional price and availability variation.

What Matter does—and what it does not

Matter is an IP-based smart-home control standard that runs over network infrastructure such as Wi-Fi or Thread. The Connectivity Standards Alliance describes its aim as improving compatibility and native interoperability among compatible devices from multiple brands. Google says Matter devices can be controlled locally over the home network and shared across multiple certified platforms through multi-admin. Google’s Prepare your smart home for Matter page states: “Cross-platform control: Matter-enabled devices can be simultaneously controlled in multiple Matter-certified smart home apps like Google Home, Apple Homekit, Amazon Alexa, and more.” The Connectivity Standards Alliance Matter overview explains the standard’s interoperability goal.

  • Matter support is not universal feature support. A Matter logo does not establish that every controller supports every device category or exposes every feature. Google notes that category support changes; consult current platform guidance and product details.
  • Thread and Matter are different. Thread is a network transport; Matter can use Wi-Fi or Thread. A Thread logo by itself does not establish Matter compatibility.
  • Thread devices need a Thread border router. Check that the hub you plan to use provides Thread routing; a Wi-Fi-only Matter hub may not be enough.
  • Multi-admin shares devices, not necessarily routines. A compatible device can be added to supported controllers, but each platform needs its own Matter-capable hub and may provide different controls. This does not establish that an existing SmartThings automation will transfer.
  • Network setup matters. Google says IPv6 must be enabled on the home network for Matter to work properly.
  • Native integrations can offer more. Home Assistant’s Hue example illustrates why a Matter connection may be simpler but less feature-rich than a product’s native integration.

A practical migration checklist

  1. List devices and dependencies. Record exact model numbers, the hubs or bridges they currently use, and any controls or automations you need to preserve.
  2. Match each device to the new platform. Check current compatibility information for that model and the required feature—not just the manufacturer, device category, or Matter logo.
  3. Confirm radio and hub requirements. Identify whether devices need Zigbee, Thread, Wi-Fi, or a retained bridge. For Thread, verify that the proposed hub is a Thread border router.
  4. Check network and platform prerequisites. For Matter on Google Home, confirm IPv6 is enabled and consult Google’s current hub and category guidance. Check each other platform’s current requirements as well.
  5. Test before retiring SmartThings. Add a small number of important devices first, verify their controls and automations, and retain the old hub until the replacement works as intended.
  6. Rebuild automations deliberately. Review triggers, conditions, and actions in the new platform; do not assume device sharing copies platform routines.

When to consider another hub

Hubitat appeared in a comparison result, but current official product specifications are not established here. That is not enough to make detailed claims about its radios, compatibility, or local-control behavior. If considering it, verify those details against current official product information and your exact device list before choosing it.
