One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a Raspberry Pi-style DIY retro console, a configured microSD card is the simplest documented choice for booting the operating system. A USB flash drive can make it easier to move game files, and some systems can also install or boot from USB—but support depends on the exact board and operating system. Choose storage by its job: booting the console, holding games, or transferring files. Keep an optical drive if you need to read original discs or preserve access to them.
Choose storage by what it needs to do
Before choosing a medium, identify the console board and operating system, then decide whether you need to boot the OS, store a game library, or move files between computers. The same device can serve more than one role, but compatibility and setup differ.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Compatibility: Check that the board and selected OS support the intended boot or storage interface.
- Capacity and speed: Match the device to the OS and the size of the library you plan to keep on it.
- Workflow: Consider how you will write the OS image, add games, and update or move files.
- Access and preservation: Decide whether you need to read original discs, and use game files you have the right to use.
There is no universal benchmark in the cited documentation ranking microSD against USB storage for every console build.
Compare the practical options
| Option | Best-supported role | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| microSD card | OS boot media on supported Raspberry Pi boards; game storage where the chosen software supports it | Compact, with no external drive or cable; Raspberry Pi documents standard boot from a valid OS image on the card | Choose capacity and speed for the board and OS. To write the image from another computer, you need a suitable card reader or adapter. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation |
| USB flash drive | File transfer in the cited RetroPie tutorial; an installation option listed by Lakka | Removable and easy to connect to a computer; can keep transfer media separate from the console | Boot support is board- and OS-specific. Follow the target software’s file-system and folder instructions. The RetroPie tutorial’s transfer method specifies FAT32 or exFAT. RetroPie first-installation tutorial; Lakka |
| USB disk or other supported storage | Possible alternative boot storage on some Raspberry Pi models | May suit a build that needs a larger library or already has a compatible interface | The category alone does not establish compatibility. Raspberry Pi says some models support USB, HAT-connected, and network boot media; verify the exact model and OS. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation |
| Original disc and compatible optical drive | Reading original media, disc-based emulation, and preservation work | Retains access to the source medium—something digital boot storage does not provide | Adds a drive, adapter, cabling, power, and software-compatibility considerations. Use a microSD card for a straightforward Raspberry Pi boot
Raspberry Pi documentation says all models since Model B+ have a microSD slot and automatically boot from a valid OS image on an inserted card. An empty card is not boot-ready: the OS image must first be written to it. Start with the board’s current setup guidance and the installation instructions for the emulation OS you chose.

Raspberry Pi says faster read and write speeds improve overall performance. Its published minimum recommendations are 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Desktop and Full, and 8 GB for Lite; it also notes supported card capacity below 2 TB. These are recommendations for Raspberry Pi OS, not universal requirements for retro-gaming systems. Check your selected OS for its own storage needs. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
Use USB for file transfer—or installation when the OS supports it
RetroPie USB transfer tutorial
The cited RetroPie tutorial describes a transfer workflow using a flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Create a folder named retropie on the drive and connect it to the console so RetroPie can build its folder structure. Then copy game files into the appropriate subfolder under /retropie/roms and reboot after the transfer. This is the tutorial’s method, not a guarantee that every RetroPie version or setup uses the same workflow; follow the instructions for your installed version. RetroPie first-installation tutorial

Do not assume every USB device can boot
A USB drive that works for file transfer is not automatically bootable on every board or compatible with every emulation OS. Confirm that the exact board supports the intended boot interface and that the OS documents the setup you plan to use.

- Compact plug-and-stay design to instantly add storage to your laptop, game console, in-car audio, and more
- Save time with ultra-fast transfer speeds up to 400MB/s (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB 3.0 port required.)
- Transfer a full-length movie to the drive in less than 30 seconds (Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 host device.)
- Get space for your high-resolution photos, videos, and more at a great value with up to 128GB of storage (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Password-protect files using a downloadable software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 10+ and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required, see Password Protection page on SanDisk site).)
Keep an optical drive when original discs matter
If your goal includes reading original optical media, a microSD card or USB drive is not a substitute for a compatible optical drive. The Raspberry Pi Official Magazine tutorial describes connecting a DVD-ROM drive to a Raspberry Pi 4 through a SATA-to-USB adapter. That setup adds hardware and software considerations, but it addresses a different need from storing an OS image or transferring game files. Build a retro CD-ROM console

- Identify the board and OS. Check the board’s current official setup guide and the emulation OS’s device-specific instructions.
- Choose the storage role. Use microSD for the documented Raspberry Pi boot route; use USB for file transfer or installation only where your OS supports it.
- Check capacity, speed, and format. Follow the selected OS’s requirements rather than treating one card size or file system as universal.
- Write the OS image to boot media. Use a suitable card reader or adapter when needed; the device will not start until a valid image is written to storage.
- Add game files using the OS’s documented method. For the cited RetroPie USB workflow, use its folder and format steps; for Lakka, check current device-specific directions.
- Verify game-file provenance and test the build. Use files you have the right to use, then confirm that the console boots and the selected software can find the files.
A USB controller is an accessory, not a storage option. The RetroPie tutorial uses a generic USB controller and says wired Xbox and PlayStation controllers can also be used; wireless controllers without their own dongle may require troubleshooting. RetroPie first-installation tutorial
