Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to adjust its connections and activity in response to experience, learning and other demands. It continues throughout life—not just in childhood—but the kinds and pace of change vary with age and from person to person. Adults can learn new skills and form memories, although some complex learning may take longer as people get older.
What neuroplasticity means
Neuroplasticity, or brain plasticity, is the capacity of the brain to change its connections and functioning. When we learn, neural connections can form, strengthen or be eliminated. Learning is therefore one expression of plasticity: experience is accompanied by changes in the brain. This is an ongoing adjustment of connections and networks, not wholesale rewiring every time someone learns a fact. The NIH educational resource Information about the Brain calls the idea that the brain stops changing after growth ceases “the greatest misconception that students have.”
How does the brain change throughout life?
There is no single lifespan curve that describes everyone’s brain. Brain structure, neural activity and cognitive abilities change from childhood through old age, but their timing and significance vary. Researchers still need long-term studies that follow people over time, alongside other kinds of evidence, to better understand how changes in brain structure relate to cognition, as discussed in this review of cortical changes across the lifespan.
It is useful to distinguish three kinds of change:
- Structural: changes in brain anatomy, including changes in the size of some regions.
- Functional: changes in how effectively brain regions and neural networks communicate or carry out tasks.
- Behavioral: changes in performance, such as learning a skill, recalling information or responding to distractions. A behavior alone does not show exactly what changed in the brain.
These categories can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A measured change in performance on one task, for example, does not establish that cognition as a whole has improved or declined.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Can the brain still change as you get older?
Yes. Older adults retain the ability to learn skills, form memories and improve language abilities. Vocabulary and accumulated knowledge may also be preserved or increase. Some complex learning tasks can take older learners more time; with that time, they may reach performance similar to younger learners, according to the National Institute on Aging (NIA).
Aging can also bring changes that affect thinking. The NIA describes broad patterns that may include shrinkage in some brain regions, less effective communication between neurons in some areas, reduced blood flow and increased inflammation. These patterns do not predict an individual’s experience. Some people notice slower word-finding, more difficulty multitasking or mild attention changes, while others experience different changes or none that are obvious in everyday life.

Why “everything declines” is too simple
Different abilities can follow different age-related paths. In a study published in Nature Human Behaviour in 2021, response times slowed with age, but two particular attention abilities—orienting attention and filtering out distractions—improved along age-related trajectories. The NIH summary reports that orienting improved into older adulthood, while distraction filtering improved into the mid-to-late 70s before declining. In that study, even the oldest participants were no worse than the youngest at ignoring distractions. These findings concern the tested attention measures, not cognition overall. Michael T. Ullman, quoted in the NIH summary, suggested that lifelong practice may help explain why some elements of these abilities improve.
What influences cognitive function?
Age is only part of the picture. The National Academies identifies sleep quality, physical activity, traumatic brain injury, other health conditions, acute illness and medications among factors that can affect cognitive function. A 2024 review of empirical work from 2017 to 2023 examines exercise, learning and environmental enrichment in relation to plasticity, while emphasizing that the rate of change varies across the lifespan.

This is not a guarantee that one activity will rewire the brain, prevent dementia or improve cognition for everyone. The evidence supports a broad view: brain change is shaped by experience and by many biological and health-related factors, with outcomes depending on the person, life stage and ability being measured. The National Academies also cautions that cognitive changes associated with aging are not necessarily signs of neurodegenerative or other neurological disease.
