The right Listen Labs alternative depends on the research job. For AI-moderated customer interviews, compare Outset, Conveo, Strella, GetWhy, and Versive. For prototype and usability testing, add Maze and UserTesting to your shortlist. Dovetail and Marvin are primarily research analysis and repository tools, not direct substitutes for interview moderation or participant recruitment.
Choose alternatives by the research job
“Customer research platform” can describe tools that collect new interviews, test a product prototype, organize existing research, or run structured surveys. Start by deciding which of those jobs you need the software to do. The categories below are directions for a shortlist, not tested rankings; vendors’ features and positioning can change.

| Research need | Platforms to investigate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| AI-moderated customer or consumer interviews | Outset, Conveo, Strella, GetWhy, Versive | Interview modality, adaptive follow-ups, recruitment source, language support, evidence traceability, and research controls. |
| UX discovery, prototype, and usability testing | Maze, Outset, UserTesting, Userology | Prototype or Figma support, screen sharing, task-interaction data, live-site testing, panel composition, and whether AI moderation is included in the plan. |
| Research repository and synthesis | Dovetail, Marvin, Condens | How the tool organizes and analyzes collected material, and whether it connects to your interview platform. Do not assume it recruits participants or conducts AI-moderated interviews. |
| Participant recruitment and research operations | User Interviews, Great Question | Current recruitment, scheduling, and operations features, plus how they fit with your collection tools. |
| Large-scale structured surveys | Qualtrics | Whether a survey-centered suite suits your study better than conversational, adaptive qualitative interviews. |
AI-moderated interview platforms to compare
Outset, Conveo, Strella, GetWhy, and Versive are the most direct alternatives to investigate when your core need is an AI-led interview. A session of this kind generally has an AI moderator ask questions, listen to a participant, and follow up based on responses. The degree of adaptation, researcher control, and supported formats can differ, so confirm what each product currently offers rather than inferring capability from the label “AI-moderated.”
Recruitment is another key distinction. A platform may offer its own panel, work with a recruitment partner, or expect you to bring your own customers. A large panel does not by itself prove that the available participants match your audience. Check screening, quotas, geographic and language coverage, and how the vendor handles hard-to-reach segments.

These vendors publish their own product positioning, and some also compare themselves favorably with competitors. Treat superiority claims as marketing rather than independent proof. Listen Labs’ guide, for example, recommends its service for ongoing enterprise research; Outset and GetWhy also promote their own services. [Listen Labs; Outset and GetWhy; Versive]
When usability testing matters more than interviews
If participants need to complete tasks in a prototype or on a live product, look beyond interview-first platforms. Maze, Outset, UserTesting, and Userology are positioned around UX discovery or product-testing workflows. Compare how each handles prototype connections, screen sharing, task interactions, and usability data. Also check whether the specific AI moderation features you want are available on the plan under consideration.

Do not assume that an interview tool’s ability to show a screen is equivalent to a product-testing workflow. If task completion and interaction evidence are central to the study, make those requirements part of the pilot instead of selecting by interview features alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen a repository or research-operations tool is the better fit
Repositories and synthesis
Dovetail, Marvin, and Condens are better understood as tools for organizing or analyzing research after it has been collected. They may complement an interview platform, but should not be treated as replacements for AI moderation or participant sourcing unless a vendor confirms those capabilities for its current product.
Rank #3
Recruitment and operations
User Interviews and Great Question are options to investigate for recruitment, scheduling, and research operations. Confirm their present scope and pricing directly, and establish whether you need a separate tool to run the study and analyze the resulting evidence.
Structured surveys
Qualtrics is survey-centered. It may be the more relevant category when the priority is a large or complex structured survey program rather than adaptive qualitative conversations.

Compare finalists with a matched pilot
There is no independent matched comparison establishing which named platform produces the most accurate findings or the best return. A controlled pilot is more informative than interview volume or polished automated summaries. Versive recommends matched studies where trials or pilots are available. Use the same brief, audience definition, and interview guide for each finalist, then review the evidence and effort behind the output. [Versive]
Pilot checklist
- Study method and modality: Confirm whether the study can use text, voice, video, prototype interaction, or screen sharing as needed.
- Moderation: Check whether follow-up questions respond meaningfully to participant answers, and how much control researchers have over the guide and session.
- Recruitment: Compare sourcing, screening, quotas, and audience fit—not just panel size.
- Evidence quality: Trace generated themes and interpretations to source interviews, quotes, or specific moments. Note where a researcher must review or correct them.
- Workflow fit: Test exports, integrations, repository needs, privacy and governance controls, and language support.
- Time and cost: Measure the work required to set up a study and reach usable findings, then calculate expected total cost using the pricing model that applies to your usage.
Have researchers judge whether a follow-up probes a response or merely rephrases the previous question. Record how much human setup and review each system requires, and whether recruited participants represent the intended audience. Keep those observations separate from a platform’s own claims about speed, scale, or insight quality.

What to verify before choosing
Features, participant access, plan limits, pricing, integrations, and governance terms can change. Confirm the current details with each vendor before committing. The available comparisons are largely vendor-authored rather than independent product tests, so use them to identify candidates and questions—not to treat a published ranking as proof of performance.
