Smart Displays With Cameras: More Private Alternatives for Your Home

If you want a smart display without a built-in camera, the Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is the clearest fit for a general-purpose Google display. For an Alexa home focused on device controls and compatible camera feeds, Amazon Echo Hub is another camera-free option—but it is a mounted control panel, not a direct replacement for an Echo Show’s video calls. Neither choice is sensor-free: microphones, connected services, and optional features still matter to privacy.

Start with the distinction: no camera or a camera you can control?

A camera-free display has no built-in camera to cover or disable. That is different from a camera-equipped model with a shutter, camera setting, or feature-specific processing. If your concern is the presence of a camera at all, choose a model without one; if you need calls or monitoring, evaluate the exact controls and how the relevant feature handles data.

For the models covered here, the practical shortlist depends on what you need the screen to do:

  • Camera-free general-purpose display: Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen), for a Google Home/Nest household.
  • Camera-free Alexa control panel: Amazon Echo Hub, for mounted smart-home control and compatible camera feeds.
  • Video calls or camera-based monitoring: a camera-equipped display may be a better functional fit, provided its controls and feature settings meet your needs.

Which camera-free display fits your home?

Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen): a camera-free Google display

The Nest Hub (2nd Gen) has no camera, so it cannot provide video calls through an integrated camera. It is the more natural choice if you want a conventional Google smart display and do not require the screen itself to send video. See Android Central’s smart-display roundup for its camera-free description.

No camera does not mean no sensing. Google’s Nest privacy information describes microphones and optional sleep-sound tracking on the Nest Hub (2nd gen). Review and disable optional features you do not want, and consider what voice-assistant use entails in your household.

Amazon Echo Hub: an Alexa home-control panel

Amazon describes Echo Hub as a device for controlling smart-home products, managing routines, and viewing compatible camera feeds. It has a microphone-off button, but no built-in camera; Android Central characterizes it as a mounted home-control interface rather than a video-call display. Amazon’s overview is at Amazon’s Echo Hub feature page.

  • Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
  • See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
  • See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.

Choose it when the priority is an Alexa-centric control surface, not when you need a screen with an integrated camera for calls. Camera-feed viewing is also distinct from the Echo Hub having its own camera.

What you give up—and what you do not—when you remove the camera

A camera-free screen avoids having an integrated camera available for video calls or camera-based monitoring from that device. It does not eliminate microphones, voice-assistant interactions, accounts, network connections, or every sensor. Smart-home compatibility also varies: Google Home/Nest and Alexa households may have different device and service requirements, so confirm that the display supports the products and routines you actually use.

Before choosing, decide which of these functions is essential:

  • Video calling from the display: A camera-free model cannot provide camera-based video calling. Google notes that some Nest Hub features, including Google Meet calling, rely on sending audio recordings and video footage to Google; consult its privacy documentation for the named features.
  • Viewing a home camera: Echo Hub can show compatible camera feeds. Viewing a feed is not the same as using the display’s own camera, and the two capabilities should not be conflated.
  • Camera-based personalization or gestures: Some camera-equipped displays offer optional sensing features. Their data handling can differ from calls, live monitoring, or setup.
  • Voice control: A camera-free display may still use microphones. A microphone mute control is useful, but it addresses microphone pickup, not every connected service or sensor.

If you keep a camera-equipped display, check each control and feature

Nest Hub Max: distinguish setup from later sensing

Google says Nest Hub Max can use its camera as a Nest Cam. For enabled on-device camera-sensing features such as Face Match and Quick Gestures, Google says video or images are not sent to Google after setup. Face Match setup is different: Google says photos captured with a phone are sent to Google to create a face model. These statements apply to the specified features and stages, not to every use of the camera. Google’s Nest security and privacy commitments also describe microphone controls and visual indicators.

Google separately says features such as Meet calling and home monitoring with Nest Cam rely on sending audio recordings and video footage to Google. The useful question is therefore not simply whether the camera is “on” or “off,” but which feature is enabled and what that feature does.

Echo Show: Home Monitoring claims apply to presence detection

Amazon Alexa Help says of Echo Show Home Monitoring: “All processing of camera views to detect presence is done by the Echo Show device. It sends no video or images to the cloud.” This describes the presence-detection processing for that feature; it is not a claim that all Echo Show video or audio activity stays on-device.

The same Home Monitoring help page describes remote live viewing, routines triggered when a person is nearby, an optional chime when the camera feed is accessed, and a delay that blurs the first few seconds. An access chime or delay can make monitoring more visible, but neither is equivalent to removing the camera or disabling every connected function.

Physical shutters and mute switches: useful, but specific

Lenovo’s older Smart Display FAQ describes a physical camera privacy shutter and microphone mute switch. That is a historical example of separate physical controls, not evidence that Lenovo Smart Display products are currently available. The FAQ is at Lenovo Support.

When assessing any model, identify what each control actually affects: a shutter blocks the camera’s view, a camera setting changes camera access or a feature, and a microphone switch addresses microphone input. Do not treat one control as a guarantee about the device’s other sensors, services, or data.

How to choose without confusing privacy controls with guarantees

  1. Write down the required job. Separate video calls, camera-feed viewing, routines, voice assistance, and general information display. A control panel and a video-call display are different product roles.
  2. Choose the ecosystem. Check whether your home is built around Google Home/Nest or Alexa, then verify that the products and services you need are compatible with the specific display.
  3. Decide whether a camera must be absent. If its presence is unacceptable, choose a camera-free model rather than relying on a setting or shutter. If you need a camera, inspect the model’s physical controls and the settings for each camera feature.
  4. Review microphones and optional sensing. Read the current product privacy documentation for voice interactions, motion or proximity sensing, personalization, and any feature you plan to enable.
  5. Check access and notice controls. Look for camera or microphone indicators, mute or camera controls, access notifications, and any available delays. Treat each as a limited control with a defined purpose.
  6. Confirm current regional availability and support. Product generations, retailer stock, software features, and service compatibility can vary by region and change over time; verify the exact model before buying.

What security research does—and does not—show

A 2024 arXiv paper, “Started Off Local, Now We’re in the Cloud: Forensic Examination of the Amazon Echo Show 15 Smart Display,” reports local usage artifacts and an insecurely stored token used to obtain access to some remote user artifacts on the examined Echo Show 15. The paper describes forensic work on one device and its examined configuration. It does not establish how common those findings are across smart displays, other software versions, or ordinary consumer use.

That case is a reason to distinguish a device-specific technical finding from a broad claim about an entire product category. It does not determine which model is right for a household; the device’s role, settings, and the user’s tolerance for connected microphones and services remain central.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
