The best alternative depends on what you use Facebook or Instagram for. For private chats and calls, consider Signal; for messaging with contacts already on it, WhatsApp is practical, though it remains part of Meta. For public social feeds, consider Mastodon. Element is an option for people interested in communications built on the Matrix standard. You may need one service for conversations and another for public posts—none of these is a complete replacement for both platforms.
Choose by what you want to replace
Facebook and Instagram combine several activities: private messages, group coordination, calls, public posts, photo sharing, and community discovery. A messaging app can replace conversations without replacing a social feed; a feed-based network may not be where your friends answer messages. Before switching, identify the people and groups you need to reach and the specific activities you want to move.

- Private conversations and calls: Signal is a strong candidate when privacy is a priority. WhatsApp may be easier if your contacts already use it.
- Public posting and following accounts: Mastodon offers a social feed organized across independently operated servers.

Contact reach is personal and regional. No comparable, current adoption figures establish a universal winner, so check where the people and communities you care about are active.

Signal: private chats and calls
Signal says end-to-end encryption is built into every message and call, and that it cannot read messages or listen to calls. Its official page lists text and voice messages, photos, video, GIFs, files, voice and video calls, and group chats. Signal describes itself as an independent nonprofit with no ads or trackers. Signal says, “Privacy isn’t an optional mode — it’s just the way that Signal works.” It also says, “Group chats make it easy to stay connected to your family, friends, and coworkers.” Those statements describe Signal’s position and features; they do not establish that your contacts will switch. Ask the people you need to reach to join before relying on it as your everyday channel.
Signal is a messaging choice, not a substitute for Facebook groups, public social feeds, or Instagram’s photo discovery. You may still need a separate service for those activities.

WhatsApp: practical reach, but still part of Meta
WhatsApp says personal one-to-one and group messages are end-to-end encrypted using the Signal Protocol. Its explanation states: “We protect these messages with end-to-end encryption using the Signal protocol, which secures your messages before they leave your device.” The statement applies to personal messages; WhatsApp describes differences for some business conversations, including cases where businesses use cloud storage and WhatsApp says the messages are not end-to-end encrypted. It says Meta AI is optional, and that linking WhatsApp with Facebook or Instagram enables connected experiences and shares information for those experiences. Since WhatsApp is part of Meta, it is a messaging alternative—not an exit from Meta.

If your friends and family already use WhatsApp, it may be a realistic way to keep in touch. Consider separately whether its ownership and data practices fit your preferences, and distinguish personal chats from business interactions and connected features.
Social feeds and public posting
Mastodon: a feed across independent servers
Mastodon describes itself as decentralized and open source. Its official site says, “Follow anyone across any Mastodon server from a single account and receive their posts in chronological order.” It also lists picture, audio, and video posts, accessibility descriptions, polls, and content warnings. Unlike a single centrally run social network, Mastodon consists of independently operated servers. Each server sets and enforces its own rules. Mastodon puts it this way: “Each server creates their own rules and regulations, which are enforced locally and not top-down like corporate social media.” Your choice of server therefore affects the rules and moderation you encounter; accounts on different servers can still follow one another.

Matrix-based communications
Element: a personal app built on Matrix
Element describes its personal app as “Secure communications built on the decentralised Matrix open standard.” It says Matrix supports “vendor-agnostic federation,” allowing compatible services from different vendors to work together, and compares Matrix’s role in real-time communications to SMTP for email. These are Element’s descriptions of the product and standard, not an independent security certification. Element’s official site
Federation can connect people across separate Matrix deployments, but it does not automatically make Facebook or Instagram contacts reachable. The people you want to contact need compatible accounts, and the setup and experience depend on the services they choose. Element is worth considering if open-standard communications matter to you; confirm that your intended group is willing and able to use it.
What about photo sharing?
Pixelfed surfaced as a possible photo-sharing alternative, but its official site provided only a JavaScript-required notice in the available material. That is not enough to assess its current features, privacy model, availability, or interoperability. Treat it as a lead to investigate rather than a verified like-for-like Instagram replacement.

A practical way to switch without losing touch
- List what you use now. Write down the conversations, calls, groups, public accounts, and photo-sharing activities you would need to replace.
- Ask your essential contacts where they are active. Contact reach matters more than a service’s feature list if the people you need are not there.
- Choose a service for each job. For example, use a messenger for private chats and a separate network for public posts rather than expecting one app to replace both platforms.
- Check the relevant privacy and governance details. For WhatsApp, distinguish personal messages from business conversations and connected features. For Mastodon, review the chosen server’s rules. For Element, confirm which compatible service your group will use.
- Move a small group first. Start with the people or community most willing to try the new service, then decide whether it works for your daily routine before shifting more conversations.
