Automatic cursor tracking and smart zoom use cursor positions and clicks associated with a screen recording to animate the pointer, choose areas to enlarge, and move the view. The result is usually an editable camera effect—not a universal feature with one standard trigger. Some products generate it after capture; the exact signals and controls vary by recorder.
What information does automatic zoom use?
A screen recording contains the changing screen image. Cursor-aware effects also need cursor or click information linked to the recording. Without that interaction data, a plain video upload may not give an editor the information it needs to reconstruct where the pointer moved or clicked.

For example, Tella says its recording apps capture cursor and click data alongside the screen. Its Mac and Windows apps record that data for any capture, while its Chrome extension records it for browser tabs. Tella uses the data to generate zooms and can turn mouse data into a smoothed, animated cursor path. Those compatibility details apply to Tella, not to every recorder. Tella’s Auto Zoom documentation and its cursor effects documentation describe those features.

Think of a generated zoom as a time-based camera move: the software enlarges the image around a target, holds that view while detail matters, then returns to a wider view or shifts focus. The software must decide which cursor activity signals a useful target and when to begin and end the move. There is no single documented trigger shared by all products: examples use combinations of clicks and pointer movement, and vendor documentation does not establish that every click or movement produces the same response.

Bandicam says its Smart Zoom follows clicks and mouse movements, with easing as the view moves in and out. It is applied after recording in Bandicam’s built-in player/editor. Bandicam documents capture in Rectangle or Fullscreen mode, followed by enabling Smart Zoom under Edit, previewing and adjusting the result, and exporting. See Bandicam’s Smart Zoom instructions for its product-specific workflow.
Tella describes zooms generated from clicks and cursor movement. Its editor allows users to move or resize a zoom, retarget it, split it, or remove it. The software’s automated choice is therefore a starting point that can be reviewed and changed, rather than a guarantee that every automatically chosen focus will match the presenter’s intent. Tella also describes an automatic-application preference; the available details here do not establish an identical workflow across all its capture modes.

Cursor smoothing, zooming, and panning are different effects
- Cursor smoothing changes how the displayed pointer travels, making its path appear more deliberate or fluid.
- Zooming scales the image to make a region larger and easier to see.
- Panning moves the visible frame across a larger captured screen, often as the focus changes.
These effects can complement one another, but one does not imply the others are available. Tella lists animated cursors separately from zoom effects. ActivePresenter’s version 8.5 manual describes automatic panning as a recording option: the capture window follows the pointer when it crosses the edge of a selected frame. It also provides a panning-speed setting and cautions that very high speeds can feel unsettling or make it hard to keep track of location. That description is specific to the version 8.5 manual, not a claim about controls in every current release. ActivePresenter version 8.5 documentation
What the documented product workflows show
| Product or feature | When the effect is applied | Documented behavior and control |
|---|---|---|
| Bandicam Smart Zoom | After capture, in the built-in player/editor | Follows mouse clicks and movement with eased transitions; documented for Rectangle and Fullscreen capture. Enable it in Edit, preview and adjust, then export. Bandicam instructions |
| Tella Auto Zoom | Generated from recorded cursor data; individual zooms can be edited | Uses clicks and cursor movement; zooms can be moved, resized, retargeted, split, or removed. Tella documents cursor-data capture in its Mac and Windows apps and in Chrome-extension browser-tab captures. Auto Zoom and cursor effects |
| Camtasia SmartFocus | Not stated in the cited guide | TechSmith recommends deliberate pointer movement and keeping the pointer near the subject of attention. Its guide says SmartFocus is optimized for recordings longer than 30 seconds; for shorter clips it suggests manually adding Zoom In/Out effects. This is Camtasia-specific guidance, not a general threshold. TechSmith’s SmartFocus tips |
| ActivePresenter automatic panning | During recording, according to the version 8.5 manual | Keeps a capture window within a selected frame and begins following the pointer when it crosses the frame boundary; panning speed is configurable. ActivePresenter version 8.5 documentation |
Why can automatic zoom choose the wrong moment?
Cursor activity is only a clue to what matters on screen. A presenter can click one place, move the pointer elsewhere, and then explain the first area; software reacting to the later cursor position may focus on the wrong thing. TechSmith’s Camtasia SmartFocus guidance specifically warns that it may predict the wrong action if someone clicks in a text box, moves the cursor to the other side of the screen, and then starts talking. The guide’s practical advice is to move the pointer deliberately and keep it near the content being discussed. If an editor permits manual adjustment, use it to correct the target, timing, or transition when the automatic result misses the point.

How to assess a recorder’s cursor and zoom features
Before recording an important demo, check the product documentation for the capture mode and workflow you intend to use. The feature names alone do not establish what data is recorded or when the effect is created.
- Cursor data: Does the recorder capture cursor positions and clicks in your operating system and capture mode? A feature documented for a desktop app may not work the same way in a browser extension.
- Triggers: Does the product describe zooms responding to clicks, movement, or both? Do not assume that every click creates a zoom.
- Timing: Is the view changed during capture, or does the editor generate the effect afterward?
- Editing: Can you change the zoom’s target, size, timing, or duration, or remove it?
- Separate effects: Are cursor animation and zoom separate options? Is panning available, and can its speed be controlled?
For the products described here, the capture distinctions matter: Bandicam documents Rectangle and Fullscreen recording for Smart Zoom, while Tella documents native Mac and Windows recording and browser-tab capture through its extension. Confirm compatibility in the vendor’s current documentation before relying on a specific feature.
