Apple’s first foldable iPhone is now an announced product, but it is not the only route to a large mobile canvas. If you want a tablet-like screen that opens from a phone, compare book-style Android foldables such as the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, OnePlus Open, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 and Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold. If you mainly want a spacious screen without a hinge, a conventional flagship such as the Google Pixel 11 Pro XL or Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the simpler choice.
The important distinction is that a traditional flagship remains a slab phone: it cannot provide the larger inner display of a foldable. The best choice depends on whether your priority is unfolded workspace, comfortable everyday use, software ecosystem, durability, cameras, battery life or purchase value in your region.

What Apple’s announcement means for shoppers
Apple’s September 2026 newsroom announcement identifies iPhone Duo as the company’s first foldable iPhone, rather than a rumor or an unconfirmed prototype. Apple says the device has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Preorders are scheduled to begin on October 16, 2026, with availability beginning October 23, 2026. Those are announced specifications and dates, not independent test results, and local configurations, pricing and stock may differ.
John Ternus, Apple’s CEO, described the design as showing “what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together” and said it “redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.” That is Apple’s promotional statement, not an outside assessment of reliability, battery endurance or multitasking performance.

For a buyer deciding whether to wait, the practical question is not simply “which phone is biggest?” It is which kind of large screen you need:
- Unfolded workspace: A book-style foldable gives you a second, larger display for reading, documents, split-screen apps and other tablet-like tasks.
- Large everyday phone: A conventional flagship avoids a hinge and usually offers the least complicated ownership experience, but it does not open into a larger canvas.
- Apple continuity: Waiting for iPhone Duo may make sense if iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud, Apple Watch integration or other Apple services are essential to you.

Best book-style foldables when the inner screen matters
Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the clearest documented alternative for someone who wants a broad inner screen without leaving Google’s Android ecosystem. TechRadar’s comparison lists an 8-inch inside display and a 6.4-inch cover display, giving you a phone-sized screen when closed and a larger workspace when opened.
The same comparison reports a 5,015mAh battery, a 5x telephoto camera and an IP68 rating. Treat those as reported specifications, not as a guarantee of endurance, zoom quality or resistance to every kind of liquid or dust exposure. Water- and dust-resistance ratings are model-specific laboratory classifications; they do not make a folding mechanism immune to wear, impact or debris.
This model is most compelling if you read long documents, manage two apps at once, annotate material, or want a larger view for maps and media while retaining Google services. Before purchase, check the exact regional model, hinge and screen warranty language, repair options, software-support period and current price. A used or imported unit can have different network bands, warranty coverage or replacement-part access.
OnePlus Open
The OnePlus Open remains a candidate for buyers who value a large open display and are willing to consider an older generation. TechRadar lists a 7.82-inch inner display and a 6.31-inch outer display, with a release date of October 2023 in its comparison.

Its age changes the buying calculation. A lower price can be attractive, but the saving is meaningful only if the phone still has adequate software support, a healthy battery, an undamaged inner panel and a warranty you can use locally. Ask a seller for the precise model number and proof of condition rather than assuming every listing has the same network compatibility or storage configuration.
Evaluate the outer display as carefully as the unfolded one. You will type, answer calls and perform quick tasks while the phone is closed, so a cover screen that feels cramped to you can erase the benefit of the larger inner panel. Try the keyboard, one-handed reach and weight in person if possible.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8
The Galaxy Z Fold8 appears in newer 2026 comparison coverage as a large-screen foldable built around multitasking and Samsung’s platform. The cited material does not establish a complete screen-size, camera, battery or price specification, so those details must come from Samsung’s current regional product page and independent testing.
Choose it when Samsung services, Galaxy accessories, DeX-style workflows or existing account data are central to your routine. Also inspect how the model handles your specific apps in split-screen or floating windows; a large panel is useful only when the software places controls where you can reach them.
Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is another newer option identified in 2026 comparison coverage. It is relevant for buyers who want a current Google foldable and prefer Pixel software, camera processing and Google account integration. The cited comparison does not provide verified screen dimensions, battery capacity, camera specifications or a price that can be safely generalized.
Check launch status in your country, the exact hinge and display warranty, repair availability and the promised software-support term. For a new foldable, early reviews and long-term durability reports may still be developing; distinguish manufacturer claims from measurements made by independent reviewers.
Traditional flagships for people who do not need a hinge
Google Pixel 11 Pro XL
Android Central recommends the Pixel 11 Pro XL as a conventional flagship for readers who want a large phone but do not need a folding display. It gives you one uninterrupted slab screen, familiar pocket use and no center hinge to manage. The cited comparison does not establish a screen measurement, price or battery test, so avoid treating it as a direct size-for-size substitute for an unfolded foldable.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the other conventional flagship highlighted for shoppers who want a large everyday screen without folding hardware. It is a better conceptual alternative than a foldable when you prioritize a rigid body, straightforward case selection and Samsung’s existing ecosystem.
As with the Pixel 11 Pro XL, confirm the current local screen, storage, camera, battery and pricing details before purchase. A slab phone cannot reproduce the expanded width of an open foldable, but it may be the better tool if you spend nearly all of your time on one app at a time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare a foldable with another foldable
1. Look beyond diagonal measurements
Inner and outer diagonals do not tell you how much usable width an app receives. Aspect ratio affects keyboard comfort, document columns, video cropping and the size of split-screen panes. Compare screenshots or handle the phones open and closed. A slightly smaller panel with a more useful shape can be preferable to a larger but narrow one.
2. Test closed-phone usability
The cover display is your default interface for quick replies, calls, authentication and one-handed tasks. Type a realistic message, reach the top corners, read notifications and use the camera without opening the device. If the outer screen feels awkward, you may open the phone constantly and expose the hinge and inner panel to more handling.
3. Audit multitasking software
Ask whether your preferred apps support split-screen, drag-and-drop, resizable windows or fold-aware layouts. Try your actual workflow: a browser beside notes, a video beside messages, or a document beside a calculator. Platform labels alone do not guarantee that every app uses the available area well.
4. Compare ecosystems before hardware
Moving between Apple, Google and Samsung can affect messaging, passwords, photo libraries, watches, tablets, earbuds and family location services. List the services you use every day, then verify that the alternative has an equivalent app and that your data can be exported or synchronized. The largest screen is not an upgrade if it breaks a service you depend on.

- Designed for Gemini Intelligence, brighter screens, and a more durable design, the new Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold delivers eye-opening performance and makes multitasking effortless[1,2,3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[4]
- As stunning as it is strong: Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s ultra-durable composite back is lighter, stronger, and designed to be nearly impossible to crack[5,6]; and with scratch-resistant glass and an all-new hinge, it’s 3x stronger[5]
- Unfold the fun: Drift away into immersive entertainment on the brighter-than-ever 8-inch screen[2]; take it into tabletop mode for hands-free streaming of your favorite content
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
5. Treat durability claims precisely
Check the exact model’s current water- and dust-resistance rating, hinge design, screen-protection terms and warranty exclusions. A rating is not a promise that all foldables are equally resistant to drops, grit, pressure or repeated opening. Inner-screen repairs can also be more specialized than slab-phone repairs, so locate an authorized service option before buying.
6. Separate battery claims from real use
Manufacturer battery figures use different test methods and cannot be ranked directly without a common test. Independent reviews should show the network conditions, brightness, refresh-rate setting and workload used. For your own estimate, consider how often you will use the inner panel, cellular reception in your area and whether you rely on navigation or camera recording.

Look at low-light, moving-subject, portrait, ultrawide and telephoto results rather than counting lenses. A reported 5x telephoto specification, for example, does not establish image quality at every zoom level. Independent samples and tests are more useful than a single headline camera number.
8. Price the complete purchase
Compare the handset, required storage tier, case, screen-protection plan, charger, insurance, taxes and repair deductible. Promotions can be temporary, and foldable discounts may depend on trade-in terms. Verify that the advertised model is for your country and carrier; an imported bargain can lose its value if warranty service or network support is unavailable.
A decision framework that prevents the wrong purchase
- Write down your largest-screen task. If it is reading, spreadsheets, document review or two-app work, start with book-style foldables. If it is messaging, photos and video on one app at a time, include traditional flagships.
- Set a closed-screen requirement. Decide the minimum cover-screen width and one-handed comfort you will accept. Eliminate any foldable that fails this test, regardless of its inner-screen diagonal.
- Choose the ecosystem. Keep Apple if continuity features outweigh the desire to buy immediately; choose Google or Samsung when their services and accessories fit your existing devices.
- Set a durability and repair threshold. Require a clearly documented warranty, local repair path and acceptable protection rating. Do not rely on a marketplace seller’s generic description.
- Validate independent evidence. Look for consistent battery, camera, hinge and display findings from reviewers who identify their test conditions. Manufacturer specifications remain useful, but they are not comparative tests.
- Confirm the transaction. Match the model number, storage, region, SIM or eSIM support, return period and warranty issuer on the final order page.
Buying checklist for a large-screen phone
- Open and close the device repeatedly in a store; listen for unusual sounds and inspect the crease or inner panel under bright light.
- Type a paragraph on the cover display and on the inner display. Check autocorrect, reach and split-screen keyboard behavior.
- Run your essential banking, password-manager, work and streaming apps before transferring data.
- Confirm that your watch, earbuds, car system and tablet are supported by the new platform.
- Read the display, hinge, liquid-damage and accidental-damage warranty exclusions.
- Check whether an authorized repair center exists in your country and what a screen replacement entails.
- For used or older models, verify battery condition, hinge alignment, inner-screen touch response, charging port wear and remaining updates.
- Record the return deadline and keep the original packaging until you have tested both screens, cameras, speakers, cellular service and wireless charging.
Which alternative makes sense in each situation?
Choose a book-style foldable when workspace is the priority
Select a foldable if you regularly benefit from reading or editing on a larger panel, keeping two apps visible, or switching between a document and reference material. Start with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Galaxy Z Fold8 or Pixel 11 Pro Fold according to ecosystem and current regional support. Consider the OnePlus Open when its age, condition and software-support outlook are acceptable.
Choose a traditional flagship when simplicity is the priority
Select the Pixel 11 Pro XL or Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want a large, familiar phone and rarely need an expanded inner display. You will not get a tablet-sized workspace, but you avoid foldable-specific compromises and can focus on the conventional flagship features that matter to you.

Wait for iPhone Duo when Apple continuity is non-negotiable
Waiting is rational if your household, work or accessories depend on Apple services and you want a foldable without changing platforms. Use the announced October schedule as a planning date, then verify your country’s model, price, storage options and warranty when orders open.
Bottom line
The best alternative depends on the screen you will actually use. For a true phone-to-tablet experience, compare current book-style foldables and judge their inner and outer layouts, software and repair coverage together. For a large screen without a hinge, the Pixel 11 Pro XL or Galaxy S26 Ultra is the more straightforward route. Keep every price, stock decision and specification tied to the exact regional model and the date you buy.
