The main choices are a dedicated kids smartwatch, a basic or limited-function phone, and—if your family uses an iPhone—a cellular Apple Watch set up by a parent. Choose by the communication your child needs, the access limits you want, and whether cellular coverage and a recurring plan make sense for your family.
Which alternative fits your tween?
| Option | Best suited to | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated kids smartwatch | Calls, texts, and wearable location features with parent-managed contacts | Service plan and coverage, contact controls, school settings, battery life, and what the SOS feature actually does |
| Apple Watch set up for a child | An iPhone family that wants Apple communication and location features on a watch | A GPS + Cellular model, the parent’s iPhone for setup and management, an eligible carrier plan, and access to Apple apps and services |
| Basic or limited-function phone | A tween who prefers a pocketable handset and does not need a full smartphone | Actual browser and app-store restrictions, contact and location features, current software, and the service plan |
| Wi-Fi-only communication setup | A child who is usually near trusted Wi-Fi and does not need independent cellular communication | Which apps work, whether Wi-Fi will be available, permitted contacts, and limits on location and emergency communication |
Dedicated kids smartwatch: the closest fit for phone-free communication
A cellular kids watch can provide a child with a phone number and independent calls and texts in a wearable device. Gabb describes its Watch 3e as a standalone watch with its own number, unlimited talk and text, voice messaging, GPS, Safe Zones, and a parent-managed contact list. Its product page describes support for up to 100 contacts. These are manufacturer-described features, not an independent evaluation. See Gabb’s Watch 3e details.

What to check before choosing a watch
- Access controls: Ask whether a parent approves contacts and whether the device includes a browser, social media, or an open app store. Gabb says its devices are designed without those services; restricted access can reduce exposure but does not eliminate every online or communication risk.
- School settings: Check how the watch behaves during school restrictions and which functions remain available. Apple, for example, describes a Schooltime feature; do not assume that every watch handles school hours the same way.
- Location: GPS and safe-zone tools can help a parent check a child’s location, but they depend on the device’s signal, battery, and connectivity. Gabb says updates may vary for those reasons and does not guarantee uninterrupted service or coverage.
- Emergency behavior: “SOS” is not a guarantee that the watch contacts emergency services. On the Gabb Watch 3e, the SOS button calls a designated parent contact, not 911.
- Plan and coverage: Gabb requires a service plan. Confirm coverage where your child will use the watch and check the current plan terms directly with the provider.
A watch is most compelling when you want a wearable, managed way to reach your child and do not need a conventional handset. If your tween dislikes typing on a small screen or wants something they can keep in a pocket, consider a limited-function phone instead.

Apple lets a parent use an iPhone to set up and manage a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch for a child who does not have an iPhone. Apple describes approved contacts, location notifications, and Schooltime. For connection away from the parent’s phone, the child’s watch needs a cellular plan; carrier eligibility depends on location and provider. See Apple Watch For Your Kids and check with your carrier.
#1 Best Overall
- Kids smartwatch sends messages and tracks their location to help encourage an active lifestyle while offering parents peace of mind (active subscription and LTE connectivity required)
- Durable, swim-friendly smartwatch features a bright color touchscreen display and up to 2 days of battery life between charges (connected feature usage and LTE network conditions will significantly impact battery life)
- Easily stay in contact with your child via text and voice messaging from the Garmin Jr. app on your compatible smartphone to the Bounce smartwatch and from Bounce to the Garmin Jr. app (active subscription and LTE connectivity required)
- Real-time location tracking lets you check in on your child’s whereabouts through the Garmin Jr. app on your compatible smartphone and even receive notifications when your child enters or leaves parent-defined boundaries (active subscription and LTE connectivity required)
- For added peace of mind, the Assistance feature lets your child quickly trigger a message with their live location to their family contacts (requires setup and your child to be in an area with network coverage where data connectivity is available)
This is not the same access profile as a purpose-limited kids watch. Apple Watch provides access to Apple services and apps, so decide whether its broader feature set fits your family’s boundaries. Setup and management also require the parent’s iPhone, making this option less suitable if your household does not use one.
Basic or limited-function phone: a pocketable alternative
A basic phone can suit a tween who wants a familiar handset but does not need the open-ended features of a full smartphone. Gabb describes its Phone 4 as a basic phone without a web browser or app store. The label “limited-function,” however, is not enough to establish what a device can do: check the exact model’s software, contact controls, location options, and current service plan before buying. Wi-Fi-only communication: useful only when the limits fit
A phone without a SIM can use Wi-Fi-based communication when a suitable network is available, but it will not provide independent cellular communication away from Wi-Fi. An Android Central author describes pairing a Wi-Fi-only phone with a separate cellular smartwatch; that is one person’s setup, not a universal recommendation or a controlled test. Before relying on this arrangement, identify which apps your family will allow, who the child can contact, and what happens when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Do not treat Wi-Fi messaging as a substitute for reliable emergency access or off-network contact.
Compare the full cost and practical requirements
The device price alone does not tell you the cost of keeping a child reachable. Cellular options require a suitable service plan, and Apple Watch setup additionally depends on a parent’s iPhone and carrier eligibility. Check activation charges, recurring service, coverage, and any replacement needs directly with the provider; the available product information does not establish a stable, comparable total-cost figure across these options.
Accessories are a separate compatibility check. Gabb lists Watch 3e bands and a screen protector and says the Watch 3e works with prior Gabb Watch bands, but verify the exact model fit before ordering. See Gabb’s watch page.
Quick Recap
A practical way to make the choice
- Write down the minimum communication need. Decide whether your tween needs calls and texts when away from Wi-Fi, or whether Wi-Fi-based contact is enough.
- Set your access boundaries. Decide whether you want parent-approved contacts, whether apps or browser access are acceptable, and what should happen during school hours.
- Match the form factor to your child. Choose a watch for wearable, managed communication; a limited-function phone if a pocketable handset matters more; or an Apple Watch if your family already uses an iPhone and accepts its broader services.
- Confirm the operational details. Check the exact model’s features, carrier and regional eligibility, plan requirements, coverage, location behavior, and SOS destination before committing.
- Agree on expectations with your tween. Explain who is on the contact list, when the device should be used, what location sharing does, and how your child should reach a trusted adult if the device fails or is unavailable.
