Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a strong first setup, choose a picture mode that suits your room, check that the image is framed correctly, and select the sound output you actually use. There is no single set of picture numbers that works for every LG or Samsung TV: menus and features vary by model, year, region, input, and software.
Choose a picture mode for your room
Picture mode is the simplest place to start. The right choice depends on room lighting, the content you watch, the TV’s capabilities, screen reflectance, and your own preference. LG’s picture guidance explains why results vary; consult your model’s manual if the menu or options differ.

On an LG TV
Open Settings and look for Picture or the picture controls in Quick Settings. Choose a mode that fits your viewing environment, the video, or your preference. Quick Settings offers a more limited set of controls, and its contents can vary by model and country. LG’s picture guidance includes example adjustments for different lighting conditions, not a universal recipe.
On a Samsung TV
Where available, open Settings or All Settings > Picture > Picture Mode. Samsung describes the modes as follows:

Not every Samsung model offers every mode. These descriptions are starting points, not guarantees about how a particular TV will look. See Samsung’s picture settings guidance for model-dependent details.
Adjust light output only as needed
After choosing a mode, adjust the screen’s light output for the room if the picture is uncomfortably dim or bright. Brightness, contrast, color, sharpness, and OLED light are adjustable controls, but their appropriate values depend on the TV and viewing conditions. Avoid copying a number from another model as if it were universally correct.
Check picture size and framing
If faces or objects look stretched, or parts of the image are missing, check Picture Size or the aspect-ratio setting before changing other controls. Use the source material’s intended framing rather than zooming by default.

- 16:9 Standard: Widescreen framing.
- Custom: Manually adjustable picture size.
- 4:3: For standard-definition material in that format.
- Fit to Screen: Displays the full image.
Check the Samsung picture settings guidance for the route and options supported by your TV.
Keep motion, processing, and gaming settings optional
Picture clarity and motion controls can change how video looks, so treat them as preference settings rather than required setup steps. Samsung also says Game Mode can optimize speed on select models, with a possible decline in graphics quality. Use it when responsiveness matters to your gaming, and compare the result rather than assuming it improves every kind of content.

Choose the sound mode that helps you listen
On a Samsung TV, open Sound and choose Sound Mode, if that option is available. Samsung describes the choices this way:

- Optimized: Emphasizes effects and spaciousness.

Try the mode that suits what you watch and how you listen. These are preference controls, not a promise of the same result on every model. Some expert sound options may be unavailable when external speakers are selected. See Samsung’s sound settings guidance.

If you use a soundbar, connect it using ports and a cable supported by both devices, then tell the TV to send sound to the external speaker. For HDMI ARC, connect the soundbar’s HDMI ARC port to the TV’s HDMI ARC port. Confirm that both devices support the connection and follow their manuals.

- Check the TV and soundbar manuals for supported connection types and the correct ports.
- Connect the devices using the specified cable. For ARC, use the ARC-labeled HDMI ports on both devices.
- On the TV, open Sound and choose Sound Output.
- Select the connected soundbar or external audio device.
Samsung describes ARC as a one-cable HDMI option when the relevant ports are present. Supported audio formats depend on the receiving device and the connection, so do not select a format without checking the capabilities of your equipment. Consult Samsung’s soundbar connection guidance and digital audio format guidance, along with both manuals.
Troubleshoot the basics before suspecting a fault
If the picture or sound seems wrong, check the settings and signal path before assuming the TV is defective:
- Confirm the selected picture mode and input. Picture options can differ by input.
- Check whether an energy-saving setting is affecting the image.
- Recheck picture size if the image is cropped or stretched.
- Verify that the intended sound output is selected and the external device is connected to the supported port.
- Use a built-in picture or sound test, if your model offers one, to help distinguish a TV issue from a problem with an input or broadcast.
Menu labels, tests, and available settings differ by model. If the route in this guide does not match your screen, use the manual for your exact TV.
