Best Alternatives to a Chromebook for Running Linux Desktop Apps

Chromebook Linux works well for many coding tasks, but hardware and app requirements can make an Ubuntu laptop a better fit. Compare the options and check compatibility before buying.

If Chromebook Linux already runs the applications you need, you may not need a different computer. Google’s Debian-based Linux environment supports command-line tools, code editors, and IDEs, but it does not support some hardware-dependent features, including cameras, Android emulators, GPU acceleration, and video decoding. If those limits block your work—or you want a conventional Linux desktop—a laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled or certified for Ubuntu is the most direct alternative.

What are the best alternatives to a Chromebook for Linux apps?

Option Best fit Main trade-off or check
Keep your Chromebook and use its Linux environment Linux command-line tools, supported editors and IDEs, and web development that fits ChromeOS’s Debian setup. Check the particular app and any camera, emulator, GPU, video-decoding, or peripheral requirements against Google’s documented limitations.
Buy a laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled or certified A conventional Linux desktop and a hardware configuration with model-level Ubuntu support evidence. Verify certification for the exact model and configuration; support can differ between SKUs.
Install Ubuntu on a general-purpose laptop People willing to choose hardware and install an operating system themselves. Linux compatibility is model-specific. Check hardware support and try Ubuntu from a USB stick when practical.
Choose a Windows laptop for mixed Windows and Linux needs People who also rely on Windows-only software. Check current Linux-environment capabilities and compatibility for each required app before buying; the sources cited here do not establish them.

When Chromebook Linux is enough

Google’s Chromebook Linux development environment is Debian-based and includes APT package management. Linux is off by default; Google’s setup instructions enable it in Settings, and setup may take 10 minutes or more. The environment supports Linux command-line tools, code editors, and IDEs. See Google’s instructions for setting up Linux on a Chromebook.

Web development is a strong fit

If your main tasks are building websites or web apps, ChromeOS can combine Linux development tools with the Chrome browser. Google documents support for common Linux editors, IDEs, and programming languages, along with forwarding Linux development servers to Chrome. That can be enough for a coding workflow without replacing the laptop: Google’s ChromeOS web-development guide explains the workflow.

Check hardware-dependent needs first

Google lists cameras, Android emulators, GPU acceleration, and video decoding as unsupported in the Chromebook Linux environment. Its help page states, “Cameras aren’t yet supported.” These limits matter only if a required application or device depends on them, so check the app’s actual requirements rather than treating Linux on Chromebooks as universally unsuitable.

Google describes the Linux environment as isolated from the rest of the Chromebook, but Linux apps share a sandbox with one another. A harmful Linux app can affect other Linux apps in that environment, though not the rest of the Chromebook. Files and permissions shared with Linux are available to all Linux apps there. Details are in Google’s Chromebook Linux documentation.

Why choose Ubuntu for a conventional Linux desktop?

Ubuntu Desktop is intended for laptops and PCs, with software for common computing, communication, content creation, gaming, and development tasks. Canonical says, “Anyone with a laptop or a PC is welcome to use Ubuntu Desktop.” You can also try Ubuntu from a USB stick before installing it or replacing your current operating system. See Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop overview.

Prefer certified hardware when possible

Canonical lists Dell, Lenovo, and HP among manufacturers with Ubuntu-certified hardware, with examples including Dell XPS and Precision and HP Z lines. Those names are a starting point, not a guarantee that every configuration in a product family is certified. Look up the precise model and configuration in Canonical’s Ubuntu Certified hardware directory before purchase.

Installing Ubuntu yourself requires model-level checks

A general-purpose laptop can be another route, but compatibility may vary with its wireless adapter, graphics, firmware, ports, and other components. Check the exact configuration and vendor support, and test from USB if possible before committing to an installation. Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop page describes the USB trial option, while its certification directory lets you check supported hardware.

What to check before buying a Linux laptop

  • Exact model and configuration: Verify the full model or SKU, not just a brand or product-family name, against Ubuntu certification or vendor support information.
  • Required applications: Confirm that each essential desktop app is available for your intended distribution and works with the functions you need.
  • Hardware and peripherals: Check the ports, docks, camera, graphics, wireless hardware, and other devices your workflow depends on.
  • Performance needs: Match memory, storage, and graphics capability to your actual workload rather than assuming that a Linux label ensures adequate performance.
  • Support lifecycle: Check the support period for the specific Ubuntu release. Canonical describes LTS releases every two years with five years of standard support, extendable through Ubuntu Pro; six-month Developer editions receive nine months of support. Release-specific dates are listed in Canonical’s Ubuntu release-cycle information.
  • Purchase and return terms: Check the seller’s return policy and whether the configuration can be returned if a required device or application does not work as expected.

Is a Chromebook a good choice for Linux gaming?

Google documents Steam for Chromebook as a beta for selected devices and warns about bugs, performance issues, and limits on which titles are available. Its stated minimum requirements are an Intel i3 or Ryzen 3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage; meeting those minimums does not establish how well an individual game will run. Check the current device eligibility and caveats in Google’s Steam for Chromebook (Beta) help page before relying on it.

How to decide between keeping ChromeOS and switching

  1. List your must-have apps and devices. Include peripherals, graphics features, emulators, and media functions—not just the app names.
  2. Check whether Chromebook Linux supports that workflow. Compare your requirements with Google’s Linux environment documentation and, for web development, its ChromeOS web-development guide.
  3. If a documented limitation is a blocker, look for Ubuntu-certified hardware. Search for the exact model and configuration in Canonical’s certification directory.
  4. If choosing an uncertified laptop, verify its components and test Ubuntu where possible. Try the USB option described on Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop page before replacing your current operating system.
  5. Compare the whole purchase, not just the operating system. Account for required ports, memory, storage, support duration, and return terms alongside app compatibility.
