Yoast and All in One SEO (AIOSEO) both describe AI features for existing content, so a migration is not the first step. Choose by the backlog you need to clear: missing metadata, on-page edits, bulk updates, internal links, or image descriptions. These tools can help with editorial work, but they do not promise better rankings.
Which plugin fits the work in your archive?
There is no single best choice for every content backlog. Begin by identifying the task and checking what your current plugin can do before adding another tool.

Yoast: keyphrase and readability checks, plus metadata suggestions
Yoast says its AI features can be used on existing content. Its AI Optimize feature checks five areas: keyphrase use in the introduction, keyphrase density, keyphrase distribution, paragraph length, and sentence length. The tool is intended to help editors improve those elements, not to certify that a page will rank better. See Yoast’s AI Optimize instructions and its FAQ about AI features.

AIOSEO describes an Optimize with AI workflow that can address an SEO title, meta description, headline, and content or readability issues in a post editor. Its feature page says the workflow creates a WordPress revision and offers controls to revert individual changes, which is useful when a suggestion would damage copy or metadata worth keeping. Review the AIOSEO feature description and WordPress.org listing for current availability; plan inclusion and credit terms can change.
Rank Math and SEOPress: consider them for specific bulk workflows
A documentation-based comparison published by Search Engine Watch on October 5, 2026, and checked October 3, 2026, describes Rank Math bulk metadata options for selected items and SEOPress PRO bulk metadata and image work. It also describes provider-key or managed-credit billing for SEOPress. These are secondary-source descriptions rather than independently tested workflows, so confirm current product documentation and plan terms before choosing either for a site-wide job. Read the dated comparison.
Link Whisper: a specialist option for finding internal-link opportunities
If the backlog is older posts that should link to newer or more useful pages, the same Search Engine Watch comparison describes Link Whisper as a workflow for selecting a destination and searching older content for link opportunities. Treat this as a focused add-on, not a replacement for a general SEO plugin. Inspect each suggested link in context: an automated opportunity is not automatically a useful link.

Feature names can obscure important workflow differences. Compare what the tool actually edits, how much editorial control it gives you, and how it handles the number of pages you need to review.

The price examples are vendor-currency figures shown in Search Engine Watch’s documentation-based comparison, not independent price checks or durable quotes. Its summary also reports Yoast limits of 100 requests per day and 3,000 per month per subscription/site, alongside shorter-window limits; verify current official limits before relying on those amounts. The comparison notes that limits and billing differ among products.
How to choose for a 40-article refresh
A manageable pilot is more useful than turning an AI feature loose across an archive. Use a small, representative batch to find out whether the workflow helps editors without overwriting good work.
- Sort the backlog by task. Separate posts with missing or weak metadata from pages whose copy needs revision, posts that need internal links, and content that needs image descriptions.
- Select representative pages. Include a post missing metadata, one with a strong title worth preserving, and one that genuinely needs copy changes. This helps reveal whether suggestions add value as well as where they can cause harm.
- Record the original text. Keep the current title, meta description, and any passage you plan to edit so an editor can compare old, suggested, and final versions.
- Run the plugin’s feature on the selected items. Check whether it works in your editing workflow and whether it supports individual review, selective acceptance, and recovery of unwanted changes.
- Review for meaning and accuracy. Keep only changes that preserve the page’s factual claims, intended audience, and useful existing wording. Confirm that an added internal link is relevant to the sentence and destination.
- Estimate the full workload. Count editor review time as well as plugin, plan, credit, and provider costs before extending the process to the rest of the archive.
What to check before migrating or adding a plugin
A new plugin can add capabilities, but switching also creates a migration and workflow task. Check these points before committing:

- Task coverage: Does it handle metadata, copy or readability edits, keyphrase checks, bulk actions, internal links, or image descriptions that your existing setup does not?
- Editorial control: Can editors inspect suggestions, keep strong existing metadata, accept changes selectively, and undo individual edits?
- Archive scale: Does the workflow run one post at a time or across selected posts? What request, credit, or provider limits apply?
- Total cost: Include the plugin tier, AI plan or credits, provider billing, applicable taxes, and human review time.
- Workflow fit: Check compatibility with the way your team edits posts or uses page builders, and confirm the process works for everyone who will review changes.
- Migration: AIOSEO’s WordPress.org listing says its importer can migrate SEO titles, descriptions, and settings from Yoast, Rank Math, and SEOPress. The SEOPress listing also names supported migration sources. What AI SEO features can—and cannot—tell you
AI editing features can help identify or revise elements of a page, but their presence is not evidence that a page will gain rankings or appear in an AI-generated answer. Yoast’s FAQ says suggestion quality may vary and that its suggestions do not directly affect search rankings. No named independent cross-plugin performance test is established by the sources cited here, so product capability should not be presented as proof of ranking impact.
Yoast separately describes schema aggregation and a customizable llms.txt feature on its AI features page. These are vendor-described capabilities, not proof that adding a file or using a feature will cause a site to be cited by an AI system. Keep that separate from the practical job of maintaining an existing archive.
