There is no evidence here to support naming one aftermarket keyless-entry system as the universal best. The right choice depends on your vehicle and on whether a system actually prevents unauthorized starting—not just unlocks doors or sounds an alarm. Prioritize vehicle-specific compatibility, a real immobilizer, and documented resistance to relay attacks. For an existing keyless car, a checked signal-blocking pouch and a rated physical lock can add practical layers of protection.
What “keyless entry” does—and does not—mean
These terms describe different functions, so compare systems by what they do rather than by the word “keyless.”

- Remote keyless entry (RKE): You press a button on a fob to lock or unlock the vehicle.
- Passive entry/passive start (PEPS): The vehicle detects an authorized nearby key or credential for hands-free access and, where supported, starting.
- Immobilizer: A start-authorization layer that prevents the vehicle from starting without an authorized key or process. It is separate from door-unlock convenience and an alarm’s audible warning.
- Digital key: A phone-based credential that may support passive access and starting. Its features and security depend on the vehicle and implementation.
A product that adds remote unlocking or an alarm is not automatically an anti-theft immobilizer. Confirm which functions are included before treating a system as theft protection.
How relay theft works, and what can resist it
Police.uk describes keyless relay theft as a device fooling a car into thinking its key is close by. In practice, the attack exploits the vehicle’s assumption that a responding passive key is physically nearby. A relay can forward live communication; it does not necessarily need to crack the key’s encryption or guess a rolling code. For that reason, encryption and rolling codes alone do not establish relay resistance.

- Remote keyless entry, ignition controller door locks
- Flashing parking lights, panic (car locator)
- 2 auxiliary outputs
One approach is secure ranging: the system estimates whether the credential is physically close by measuring signal travel time. Bosch describes ultra-wideband (UWB) time-of-flight measurement with encrypted communication as a relay countermeasure. Microchip’s 2023 car-access reference-system documentation describes AES-128 authentication and a UWB distance-measurement feature for identifying relay attacks. These are technology descriptions, not independent tests or certifications of a retail product. UWB is a useful design feature to investigate, not a guarantee that every system carrying the label is secure.
When a seller claims “anti-relay” protection, ask what the system measures, how it rejects a relayed signal, and whether evidence applies to the exact vehicle and product version you would buy.

Compare systems by the protections they actually provide
| Option or layer | What it can do | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Factory PEPS or digital key | Provides hands-free entry or starting, depending on the vehicle. | Check the specific vehicle implementation and whether it uses documented secure ranging. The feature name alone does not establish relay resistance. |
| Aftermarket keyless-entry system | May add hands-free access and other functions; capabilities vary by product. | Confirm vehicle fit, start authorization, relay protections, retained factory functions, and current support. |
| Signal-blocking key pouch | Can screen a key’s signal while it is stored, reducing the opportunity for a relay device to communicate with it. | Test that the individual pouch blocks the key and check it periodically; a damaged or ineffective pouch is not protection. |
| Rated steering-wheel lock | Adds a visible physical barrier that can make the vehicle harder to drive away. | Check the rating or approval for the exact model and market; police guidance recommends security-rated products. |
| Aftermarket immobilizer | Can add a start-authorization requirement, depending on the system. | Confirm compatibility and manufacturer approval with a dealer or qualified installer. Verify the authorized backup procedure. |
What to check before buying an aftermarket system
- Establish exact fitment. Give the dealer or installer your vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, and market. Ask about its wiring architecture, whether factory key functions remain intact, and whether the specific kit is supported for that configuration. Do not assume a universal kit will fit.
- Confirm start authorization. Ask whether the system includes an immobilizer, or only entry convenience, remote controls, or an alarm. Request an explanation of what prevents the engine from starting after an unauthorized entry attempt.
- Ask for product-specific security evidence. Look for mutual authentication and cryptographic protection, as well as protection against replay or code capture. For relay resistance, request evidence about the specific product and vehicle—not just a general claim about encryption, rolling codes, or UWB.
- Understand failure and backup behavior. Find out what happens if a fob or phone battery dies, connectivity is lost, or the system faults. Before installation, confirm a safe, authorized way to unlock and start the vehicle in those cases.
- Check installation and ongoing support. Verify installer qualifications, warranty terms, service support, compatibility updates, and whether the vehicle manufacturer approves the upgrade. Ask who will diagnose a fault and what happens to the system if the vehicle needs electrical or security work.
How to assess the Advanced Keys AK-104S
The Advanced Keys AK-104S is one named aftermarket example, not an established winner. Its manufacturer describes it as a standalone smart-entry system with RFID, rolling-code encryption, and an ignition relay that is disabled following an unauthorized entry or vehicle-activation attempt. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently validated performance findings.

Protect a keyless car you already own
- Store both keys away from the vehicle. Keep the main key and spare away from doors, windows, and the car itself, so they are less accessible to a nearby relay device.
- Use and check a signal-blocking pouch. Put the key inside when it is not in use. Test the pouch with your vehicle and check it every few months, as Police.uk advises; replace it if it stops blocking the signal.
- Consider a security-rated physical lock. A steering-wheel lock is a separate barrier from electronic key protection. Hertfordshire Constabulary advises an approved, strong full-cover steering-wheel lock; check that any product’s rating or approval applies to the particular model and market.
- Ask about an approved immobilizer. Police.uk advises discussing a manufacturer-approved aftermarket immobilizer with a dealer. Confirm both vehicle fit and approval rather than assuming any aftermarket device is suitable.
- Reprogram keys after buying a used car. Ask the dealer or a qualified specialist to remove unrecognized keys from the vehicle’s authorized list, so a key retained by a previous owner cannot remain authorized.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The available sources do not establish a broadly applicable, current comparative statistic for how effective advanced aftermarket keyless-entry systems are, nor do they provide an independent product test or a current vehicle-specific fitment matrix. That is why a universal “best system” ranking would overstate what is known.
Hertfordshire Constabulary reported that vehicle thefts in its county rose by more than 11% in 2024 compared with 2023, with higher rises in some named districts. This is a local police-force figure, not a national rate and not evidence that a particular security product works.
