The most reliable 3D printer settings are the manufacturer’s profile for your exact printer and material—not a universal temperature or speed. Start with that profile, confirm the build plate and first layer are right, then change only the setting that matches the failure you see.
Start with the printer-and-material profile
In your slicer, select the exact printer and filament or material. Use its recommended nozzle and bed temperatures, speed, cooling and retraction as the baseline. These settings interact: a temperature that works for one material, machine or build surface may not work for another.

Keep the baseline until a specific symptom gives you a reason to adjust it. Change one variable at a time and print a small test so you can tell whether the adjustment helped.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGet the first layer right before changing temperatures
The first layer is the base of the print. Prusa’s first-layer troubleshooting guide recommends checking the conditions that determine whether it can adhere before reaching for extra heat or adhesive.

- Supported Filament: Ideal: PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET ABS, ASA; Capable : PA, PC; Not Recommended: Carbon/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer.
- Check the plate: Make sure it is clean, undamaged, seated correctly and compatible with the material. A dirty or unsuitable surface is not fixed by forcing the nozzle closer.
- Check first-layer calibration: If the nozzle is too close, extrusion can be restricted. Excessive squishing to force adhesion can damage a steel sheet.
- Slow the first layers if needed: If the earlier checks do not solve adhesion, Prusa suggests trying about 75% print speed for the first three layers. This is a conditional troubleshooting step, not a universal speed setting.
- Try a brim before extra adhesion products: A brim increases the area connecting the print to the plate. Use glue or another adhesion aid only if it suits your printer and plate guidance.
Use temperature values only in their stated context
These manufacturer examples show why the printer’s own material profile should take precedence. The Prusa values below come from material guides for specific printer contexts; they are not universal presets.
| Material and source context | Nozzle, first / later layers | Bed, first / later layers | Build surface guidance | Other considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PLA, Prusa Research guide for the covered printer context | 215 °C / 210 °C | 60 °C / 60 °C | Satin or smooth PEI | Generally easy to print; limited heat and UV resistance. See Prusa’s PLA guidance. |
| PETG, Prusa Research guide for the covered printer context | 230 °C / 240 °C | 85 °C / 90 °C | Textured powder-coated or satin sheet; smooth PEI may be damaged | Choose a compatible sheet rather than copying PLA’s surface choice. See Prusa’s PETG guidance. |
| PLA, historical Ultimaker 2-family educational example | 210 °C / not stated | 60 °C / not stated | Not stated in the cited example | Older model-specific defaults; see UltiMaker’s educational guide. |
| ABS, historical Ultimaker 2-family educational example | 240 °C / not stated | 90 °C / not stated | Not stated in the cited example | Older model-specific defaults; see UltiMaker’s educational guide. |
If a new material still adheres poorly after you have checked the plate and first layer, Prusa suggests a 5–10 °C bed-temperature increase as a troubleshooting experiment. It is not a default adjustment for every print.

Match the fix to the failure
If the print will not stick
Work through plate cleanliness and compatibility, plate placement, and first-layer calibration before raising temperatures. If those checks do not help, try the slower first-layer setting or a brim. Extra adhesive is conditional, not a substitute for a suitable, properly prepared surface.

Large parts can shrink as they cool, pulling corners off the plate. Prusa notes this is common with higher-temperature materials such as PC Blend, ASA and ABS. Avoid drafts and keep the ambient temperature stable when printing these materials.

A brim adds contact area; a skirt or draft shield can help retain heat around a part prone to warping. Match part cooling to the material and geometry: too much fan can lift a part or weaken layer-to-layer bonding, while insufficient cooling can also cause problems. Follow the material profile before changing fan settings. See Prusa’s warping guidance.
If you see stringing or oozing
Retraction settings depend on the printer’s filament path and material. Prusa identifies proper retraction as one way to reduce stringing and oozing in its PLA guidance. Do not copy a value from a different machine without checking its profile.

For example, UltiMaker’s older Ultimaker 2-family educational material gives 4.50 mm retraction length at 25 mm/s. That is a model-specific Bowden example, not a general prescription for Bowden or direct-drive printers. The guide also warns that excessive retraction can strip filament or cause inconsistent extrusion.

A simple adjustment loop
- Select the exact profile: Choose your printer and material in the slicer; retain the manufacturer’s baseline settings.
- Inspect the setup: Check the plate’s cleanliness, condition, placement and material compatibility, then verify first-layer calibration.
- Name the symptom: Identify whether the issue is poor adhesion, lifted corners, stringing, or another specific failure.
- Change the matching variable: Try the least disruptive relevant adjustment, such as slowing the first layers for adhesion or adding a brim for a lifting part.
- Test and assess: Change one setting at a time and compare the result with the original profile. Keep the change only if it addresses the symptom without creating a new one.
