Online card-payment security is a coordinated process, not a single fraud filter. Merchants, payment networks and card issuers exchange transaction information; authentication helps assess whether the cardholder is legitimate, tokenization limits exposure of card details, and authorization decides whether the payment can proceed.
What happens when you pay online?
A typical card-not-present payment can involve several distinct decisions and systems. The merchant initiates the payment and can provide useful transaction and device context. If the transaction uses EMV 3-D Secure (3DS), that context can be shared through the 3DS ecosystem so the issuer can assess the authentication request. The issuer may authenticate the payment without interrupting the shopper or ask for an extra verification step. Separately, authorization determines whether the transaction can proceed, including whether the account is in good standing and funds are available.

These steps support one another, but none is a universal guarantee against fraud. A payment may be authenticated and still not be authorized; protecting card details does not, by itself, verify who is using them.

Authentication asks whether the person initiating an online payment is entitled to use the card. Authorization is the decision about whether the transaction can proceed. It includes checks such as account status and available funds. In a typical online card payment, authentication can inform the process before authorization, but the terms describe different questions—not two names for an approval.

How does 3-D Secure protect online payments?
EMV 3-D Secure is an industry protocol that lets a merchant initiate an authentication request and share transaction context within a payment ecosystem. The issuer evaluates information such as device type, location and purchase history using its access control server. The result can be either a background authentication or a request for the shopper to take another step.
Frictionless flow
If the issuer considers the transaction low risk, authentication may happen in the background without a visible prompt. A shopper should not assume that the absence of an OTP or biometric check means 3DS was not involved.

Challenge flow
If the issuer sees more risk, it may ask the shopper for an additional verification step, such as a one-time password (OTP) or biometric check. This is often called a challenge flow. The extra step is risk-based; it is not required for every 3DS transaction.

The aim is adaptive verification: allow lower-risk payments a smoother path while applying more friction when the issuer sees a reason to verify further. Visa describes Visa Secure as its EMV 3DS program. Visa Secure is not the universal name for the protocol; EMV 3DS is used across payment networks and financial institutions.

What does payment tokenization do?
Tokenization replaces sensitive payment-card details with a unique token. That limits direct exposure of the original card number in the payment flow. It addresses the risk of credential exposure, whereas authentication addresses whether the person or device initiating a transaction is legitimate.
The two measures can reinforce each other, but a token alone does not prove a customer’s identity. Mastercard’s December 2025 Digital Payment Security Principles describes a “Verified Token” as one created after the cardholder has been authenticated. That pairing combines protected payment credentials with an identity check; it does not make either mechanism a substitute for the other.

Who contributes to the security decision?
- The merchant initiates the authentication request and can supply useful payment and device context.
- The payment network supports the protocol exchange and applies the rules of its program.
- The issuer evaluates risk and decides whether authentication can happen without a prompt or needs an additional verification step. It also makes the authorization decision.
- Standards bodies publish requirements for secure payment environments and software.
This is shared defense, not one company or a single AI system that sees and decides everything. The protections depend on the participants’ systems and how they are implemented.
What do reported results say about tokenization and authentication?
Payment networks have published figures associating tokenization and authentication with changes in fraud and payment performance. The figures below describe the networks’ own data and comparisons; they are not guarantees or forecasts for an individual shopper, merchant, region or transaction.

| Reported result | Source and comparison |
|---|---|
| 50% of all e-commerce transactions were tokenized. | Visa, citing Visa Token Services Vault data, May 2026. |
| Authorization rates were 4.8% higher for tokenized transactions than for primary account number transactions. | Visa, citing VisaNet global card-not-present transactions from January through December 2025. |
| Fraud rates were 39.4% lower for tokenized than non-tokenized credentials. | Visa, citing global Visa Risk DataWarehouse fraud rates for FY25 Q1–Q4. |
| Transactions that were both tokenized and authenticated had three times less fraud than transactions using neither. | Mastercard, Digital Payment Security Principles, December 2025. |
| Tokenization adoption was associated with a 3–6 percentage-point increase in global approval rates. | Mastercard, Digital Payment Security Principles, December 2025. |
These results use different datasets and comparisons, so they should not be treated as one head-to-head test. They show why networks promote tokenization and authentication as complementary controls, not what any particular merchant will achieve.
What do PCI security standards cover?
The PCI Security Standards Council’s 3DS Core Security Standard addresses environments where 3DS functions are performed. Its 3DS SDK standard sets security requirements, assessment procedures and guidance for relevant software development kits.
PCI SSC’s standards catalog reports a formal sunset period for the PCI 3DS SDK Standard from May 1 through October 31, 2026. As of October 4, 2026, that period is underway. The catalog information cited here does not establish what applies after October 31, so organizations checking requirements beyond that date should consult PCI SSC’s current catalog or bulletin.
How should a merchant assess payment-security options?
For merchants reviewing gateways, tokenization or fraud-management services, compare what each approach actually covers rather than relying on a broad claim that it “prevents fraud.” Useful questions include:
- Does the approach protect card data, verify the cardholder, or both?
- What fraud outcomes and approval-rate results are reported, and against what comparison?
- How much checkout friction can the authentication flow introduce, and when can a challenge appear?
- What implementation and compliance scope applies to the merchant’s environment?
- Which region, transaction population and time period underlie any performance claim?
The answers matter because an observed result depends on implementation, threat conditions and the population measured. A network-reported average is not a merchant-specific prediction.
